Either way, tomorrow will answer these questions. I continue to hope for the best while expecting little
I feel the same way Bob.
Only difference has been him playing "Letting Go" instead of "Junior's Farm" and is near the end of show before encore.

Since he has basically done all of BOTR live, it would not be that big a deal to me, "Flaming Pie" would be more interesting live IMO.
Spare a thought for poor old Mamunia - the only track from BOTR that's he's never done live. (I don't count Helen Wheels as a BOTR track btw)
I'd love Mamunia to show up... same with Love in Song and We're Open Tonight. Great acoustic songs... He could even do a medley of solo/Wings tracks that most people don't know and I'd be happy. Think- Heart of The Country, Mamunia, Love in Song, We're Open Tonight, Put it There, The Song We Were Singing, Jenny Wren, Early Days. Medley on acoustic guitar. one can dream

As much as I'm not surprised there weren't any changes in the show tonight, I am still dissapointed. There's so many songs I could easily eliminate and subbed in for other stuff he's even played but like a reissue of Flowers in the dirt gets ignored, sgt Pepper anniversary pretty much ignored. Setlist could be so much better.

The first timers probably loved the show and that is who he worries about.

Valid but seeing this show already songs like Four Five Seconds and Temporary Secretary were rush to the bathroom songs so I'd change out at least those.

I agree !!

I'm not sure what the 3 surprises were supposed to be, unless some were things that were added in the previous years. I have mixed feelings. If there were FITD songs added, I was going to weigh getting a ticket and flight to Chicago. I guess I'll stick with just the fall shows, but I really would've liked to see something different. Here's hoping there's a new song or two out by September.
-
If I could change one thing it would be the unnecessary 3 songs from new, do we still need New, Save Us and Queenie Eye in the set?

I agree, if he is going to still do songs from "New" why not something different like "I Can Bet" or "Early Days".

Yep, songs from FITD would have been nice since it is the latest re-issue. IMO the only way show changes is if he is comfortable doing songs from his new album coming up this year.
-
While I would have liked FITD songs, I predicted before the Miami show that we would not get any. 4/5 Seconds got a good response in Miami. I actually thought the placement of Sgt Pepper reprise before Hi Hi Hi didn't flow well. I will be curious to see if that song stays in that slot, moves, or disappears. When it ended, I almost thought he was going to play Day In The Life next!

I'm sure nobody cares, but after putting some thought into the setlist he's been doing, I feel like this wouldn't be asking for too much, and it would satisfy our needs as diehard fans, as well as the casual Beatles fan. Got To Get You Into My Life Letting Go I Want To Hold Your Hand Jet Flaming Pie Getting Better Let Me Roll It I've Got a Feeling My Valentine Nineteen Hundred Eighty Five Here There and Everywhere Maybe I'm Amazed Things We Said Today Put It There In Spite of All The Danger You Won't See Me Love Me Do Blackbird Little Willow Lady Madonna Queenie Eye Maxwell's Silver Hammer Lovely Rita Penny Lane I Saw Her Standing There Being For The Benefit of Mr. Kite Ram On Something OblaDi OblaDa Band On The Run Let It Be Live and Let Die Hey Jude Yesterday Sgt. Looking at some of the songs that Paul has never done (even Beatle ones) I wonder if Paul just doesn't think he and his current band could pull them off. Some examples that I'm thinking about are: *I Want to Hold Your Hand - it would be a definite crowd pleaser for the heavy boomer audience (actually everyone young and old). This was a true John/Paul collaboration. Since Paul is so into playing the Beatle songs, you have to think it is a song he has considered. My only theory is that it is too iconic and he and his band just can't duplicate the harmonies well enough. Of course 2017 would be even harder but Paul never even played it in 2005 or 2009-2010 when his voice was much better. Any thoughts?? *bringing back some of the FITD songs he did in 1990 - I wonder if he doesn't feel that he and his current Band can do them as well as he did in 1990. I always thought that Hamish Stuart had a great 2nd voice for Paul. The song "This One" comes to mind and it did sound great back in the day. Could Paul and his current band do a good job on My Brave Face? Maybe they tried it and Paul just wasn't happy with the result. I have no theory on Put It There. Seems like a pretty easy acoustic song to do. Any thoughts?

____________________________________________________ Carson, If this was the setlist he played in Miami (or something close to it) then I'm at the Tampa show on Monday. We could only dream. At least you would have songs he has never played (or hasn't played in a long time). Not sure he could sing She's A Woman today . Still I am puzzled that he didn't bring back Penny Lane for Miami and the rest of the US leg. I actually think that Hard Days Night is a good (and relatively new) opener. Just my opinion, but he has played "Got to Get You Into My Life" a lot over the years. I would love to hear what "I Want to Hold Your Hand" sounds like with this band and the audience reaction. I remember they did "Please Please Me" (I think 2005) and I liked it. And of course I would love to hear Little Willow and Put It There. Those 2 songs alone would have me in Tampa.

Speaking of that, do we know when he's going to release the album? Apparently with my ticket I bought for Chicago I get a copy of it....?
One of the crew said they think October
These messages come from the Miami thread, but I thought it would be better to ask my question in this thread instead: if the new album does get released in October, how likely would it be for him to include songs from it in the September shows?

If the album comes out in October, maybe the first single will see the light on September and be played on the NYC concerts. Makes sense, at least.

Okay, I've posted more details about the night in Tampa on the corresponding thread, but I thought a greater analysis of the set and a survey of the folks (at least in my section) at the concert, and that I attended with, would be better suited here! Tampa was my 13th concert, and my 4th time seeing the "One on One Tour". This was my aunt's 2nd time (she was at Night #2 in DC last year), and my uncle's first time ever seeing Paul. My aunt is a serious Beatlemaniac (as her sign which Paul ignored said) and she has grown an interest in his post-Beatle music since attending last summer. My uncle is a very casual Beatle fan. He is not a concert-goer...in fact, his last concert was Elvis Presley on what became his last tour. I'd say at least 90% of the crowd fell closest to casual Beatle fan that rarely attends concerts. A little perspective: "Love Me Do" got a bigger reaction than "Live and Let Die". So I'm going to categorize the setlist based purely on reception from the audience...three categories: 1. OH MY GOD BEATLE PAUL IS HERE!!! -A Hard Day's Night: Blew the f'ing roof off the place. -Can't Buy Me Love -We Can Work it Out -Love Me Do: It was a little frightening how big of a response this got. He could've encored with this puppy. They were eating it up. -And I Love Her: He shakes his buns and the old biddies just melt... -Blackbird -Lady Madonna: Rocked the house...yet my section stayed seated... -Eleanor Rigby: Many gave this a standing ovation, and rapidly sat back down... -Something: Also received an unusually grand response from the audience. -Ob La Di, Ob La Da: This got the oldy moldys back up and on their feet!!! -Back in the USSR -Let it Be -Live and Let Die: The entire section was seated when it began, after the first flame...all up! -Hey Jude -Yesterday: Except for the numbskull on his phone next to me... -Sgt. Pepper: Went over well, but an awkward transition... -Get Back -Closing Medley: What can I say, it's perfect. 2. An average rocking and/or respectful response: -Junior's Farm: People were really digging this, I think it was just still from the initial high of seeing Paul, based on their reaction to other post-Beatle songs. -Jet: They kept rockin' along...it's easy to get into the chorus of this even if you don't know it. -Let Me Roll It: Multiple people in my section already knew the Jimi Hendrix story was coming and began telling it before Paul could finish it. I'm guessing from GENYC DVD...he should probably take the stories out that he sells on disc. -I've Got a Feeling: This rocker didn't get its due credit. -1985: see above! -Maybe I'm Amazed: A woman behind me asked her friend "Is Paul still married to Linda?"...see my note on "My Valentine" below. -You Won't See Me: This arrangement kicks ass and it receive a pretty "meh" reaction. -Here Today: People stuck around to hear what Paul had to say about John but it always pisses me off when you can hear people talking during this and it is every time. -The Fool on The Hill -I Wanna Be Your Man: Sounds recognizable even if you don't know it...that is, when Paul sings it correctly. -Being For The Benefit of Mr. Kite!: I'm convinced that most the folks in my section have never owned Sgt. Pepper. -Band on The Run: This doesn't work well after "Ob La Di" because the beginning of BOTR is a total downer after the fun-fest of its predecessor IF and ONLY IF, you don't know the song "Band on The Run" and think Paul is playing a slow song and decide to sit down like every crusty old fart in my section. -Hi, Hi, Hi: Where I sat, the folks were blindsided...a song we don't know, in the encore? And it's about DRUGS?! By the way...LOTS of fun smells in the arena tonight! 3. NO BEATLES = BEER & BATHROOM -Temporary Secretary: Nearly cleared my section. It was like the plague struck. As soon as he said "lesser known song" people were up. -My Valentine: Obviously, the women behind me didn't hear the dedication to Nancy in this because like so many others, she heard "new-ish song" and vacated the area. -In Spite of All The Danger: Apparently it goes both ways. Pre or Post Beatle, it doesn't matter. This one tanked in reception as did the forced sing-a-long reprise. -Queenie Eye: He said "latest album" and they were gone again...those rich old drunk weirdos with their busted bladders. -New: Before playing this, he did the bit about knowing which songs the crowd doesn't like because of phone lights. I don't think many folks heard it since foot traffic was at its peak for the evening. -Four Five Seconds: See above! So I conclude like so many others have: the majority of the fans simply do not give a rat's ass about the solo songs. There were SIX songs that didn't score with the crowd tonight and they STILL left the venue floating on air. So I see absolutely no reason why Paul, who acknowledged multiple times tonight that there is a group of folks that come year after year, can't switch around the songs that fall into these six slots more frequently for us repeat offenders because the majority of the crowd simply isn't listening anyway. Oh! And as for my family? My aunt absolutely loves the "New" album as well as "Temporary Secretary" and all the Wings stuff. She didn't like "In Spite..." or "45 Sec" because she thought there were so many better songs. Right on! My uncle enjoyed the whole package and couldn't even really comment on it this analytically. His favorite song was "Ob La Di, Ob La Da" and he did in fact go to the bathroom during "Queenie Eye" However, the intriguing part was when I asked him what song he wanted to hear that he didn't and he said "The one about the butter pie...Uncle Albert!" ...where the hell did that come from?!? Sometimes, we just never know.

__________________________________________________________ WixRocks, Thanks so much for the great summary. You were cracking me up with a lot of your comments. I have to say after reading your comments (here and on the Tampa thread) I'm glad I didn't spend the money to go to last night's concert. I still don't like the setlist in general plus there are certain songs that he just can't sing anymore. Like you, I'm a huge fan. It would be quite painful to hear Paul sing a great song like MIA. As he was struggling, I couldn't help be thinking how well he sang MIA in 2002 or 2005. As Yankeefan said, it would be like watching a Hall of Fame Baseball Player (e.g. Willie Mays) still trying to play when he is 42 years old and way over the hill. Paul really needs an "objective" Music Director (I love Wix but it should be someone not in the band) that is not afraid to tell him that he no longer can sing certain songs even it they are signature ones. Too bad one of his children did not take an active part in his Music career. It would take someone really close to him to be brutally honest because Paul (and I love the guy) seems to be quite stubborn. It was very interesting to hear your comments on "Love Me Do". The song itself wouldn't be on my Top 100 Paul songs (Beatles,Wings, Solo) but I'm not surprised at all about the reaction. I've said it in a few of my previous posts. It was a perfect addition a couple of years ago considering his age and current voice. Again, the reason for the very positive reaction was not at all a surprise to me. Itt is easy to sing and the crowd joins in and takes over. It smacks Beatlemania to the heavy Boomer, Beatle audience. Wix's harmonica is spot on by the way. As I have said, Paul needs more songs like this. Ob-La-Di continues to go down very well for the same reasons. I know your feeling about a song like" When I'm 64" not being an rock arena song but I still think last night's crowd (that you so ably described) would have gone nuts over this type of sing-along that everyone knows. Easy to sing and they would have just taken over. Another part of Paul's show that has totally disappeared is the "spontaneity" factor. I was watching the bit (On Periscope) where Paul was reading the signs from the audience. When he read the sign about the guy who was having his 64th birthday, Paul should have just turned around to Wix and motion to do a little When I'm 64 on the piano. The crowd would have gone CRAZY!! These are great professional musicians and Wix could have easily done it. Unfortunately, Paul isn't very spontaneous with things like that. He just does the same old stories whereas last night was a perfect opportunity to just ad lib "When I'm 64. Should I mention that "64" came from Sgt. Pepper. Even if I was a Beatle only Paul fan, I would have been very disappointed with this setlist. Only 2 songs from Sgt. Pepper when he mentions about the 50th anniversary coupled with the fact that it was just #1 on Billboard in America. I'll add to this later on! I saw a good bit of the concert on Periscope. Granted not like you saw it in person but I certainly got a good feeling for the show. Yes, Paul is one of the best performers in history and for the first timers I know they got their money's worth. But I still find the setlist to be bad from two perspectives...his current voice and the songs he has chosen to perform. Here's my take: Beatle Perspective *How do you play a tertiary song like "I Wanna Be Your Man" and skip Penny Lane, A Day in the Life or Getting Better. If I was Paul's music director I would have pushed him to do a Sgt. Pepper "medley" toward the end like: Sgt. Pepper song (the full one) Getting Better (Paul and the Band did this in 2002 and a lot of years have gone by) Penny Lane (I know it wasn't on the album proper but it is right in that era) Lovely Rita (again Paul and the Band have recently done it) Day in the Life Now a medley like this would have brought the house down!! It is the 50th anniversary for God sake!! To do just 2 songs (one being the 1 minute reprise) just doesn't show imagination and does little to justify an album as I said that just recently after 50 years hit # 1 on the Billboard charts. A tremendous achievement but Paul does little to take advantage of it and he has the audience (mainly boomers) that would just eat it up. And by the way, he can't sing "I've Got a Feeling anymore. Just scratch it and play another Sgt. Pepper song. And "I Wanna Be Your Man" is barely a tertiary Beatle song. Who cares about the Mick and Keith story. The real story and real history is that Sgt. Pepper just hit #1 on the current Billboard chart. To play "I Wanna be Your Man" and not Penny Lane or Day in the life is totally ludicrous. *Solo Perspective Where do I begin! Ok you played Temporary Secretary and 4-5 Seconds over the last year but why continue it. Temporary Secretary isn't even a tertiary Solo song for Paul and Paul can't sing 4-5 Seconds even a little bit. Why I ask! This whole "relevant" thing that I guess is coming from his Marketing team is totally irrelevant to his US audience today. Give us a couple of meaningful songs like Put It There or My Brave Face which again just had a historical reissue (FITD). Both songs are very Paul and Beatleesque. Many people in the audience may not remember "Put it there" but so many boomers as parents themselves can relate so easy to it. Paul tries to be too "hip" too often instead of playing his type of songs. His audience could care less about those 2 "relevant" songs. The 2 New Songs...ok you have played them over the last couple of years so now is the time to change up. If he wants to stick with the "NEW" album, play "Alligator" which I hear goes down well in his rehearsals as well as "I Can Bet" or "Early Days". Again, there doesn't appear to be any drive to play different Solo songs. I loved the 2002, 2005 and 2010 shows because he brought out so many fresh new songs (both Beatle and Solo) but since that time he no longer is the performer he once was from a "Setlist" Perspective. I love the Guy but I wish someone really close to him would be real honest. He has to stop singing some of these songs that he just can't sing anymore. I don't care if it is a song like MIA that is a true signature song. And some of the other songs where he really struggles to sing are just not necessary. He needs to find a couple of more songs like "Love Me Do" "Hard Days Night" and "Ob La Di" where his band can help him and the crowd sings along. Sorry for the long post but I'm a little psyched up from reading your very hones comments which I love. I know you are a great fan like me. Yes, for the 1st timers Paul will still delight but I can't help think of what someone else said a while back...the setlist/show could be significantly better.
-
Skimming but I will go back and read Wix' comments more thoroughly, and thanks for them. Mini changes from Miami to Tampa...Save Us out, Junior's Farm in; Letting Go out, Jet in. And what did Get Back replace....Birthday? Will see what happens in Duluth. And I agree with your comment on the Tampa thread about Sgt Pepper...I almost thought he was going to do Day In the Life afterwards. The current placement with Hi Hi Hi feels awkward. I wonder if that is going to stay or move.

I'm in Perth, Australia and I'll be seeing/hearing Paul for the first time live in December I'm hoping Helter Skelter & I'm Down will be in the setlist. looks like he isn't playing those songs right now anything from Revolver & The White Album I'd love to hear live. I also love Early Days & Sing The Changes.
