Stones vs. Paul
-
Apologies in advance for the length of this but just wanted to offer my humble $.02... First, Kelly - you will *not* be disappointed if you do happen to get tickets for this Stones tour. Can I guarantee it? Of course not but clearly these guys aren't the freewheelin' drugtakin' wildmen they were back in the late 70s - professionalism is a huge point of pride for these guys at this point. The money doesn't hurt of course but they are still doing this because they sincerely want to play and know they are damn good at it. Just as Macca was holed up in a CA studio rehearsing last week, the Stones were as well (next door!), they played an intimate gig for 350+ people last Friday and been putting the finishing touches on the show this week at a large soundstage in prep for opening night tomorrow at the Staples Center. They're positively chomping at the bit to get out there and give their fans a show. I'm sorry about your previous experience and can certainly understand being a bit shy about spending the $$ to go again but I honestly can't imagine you will regret it. Re that review from IORR - first, the fact that it's in the "Buy/Sell/Trade" section of the forum tends to make me think that one of the mods moved it there as s/he thought the poster was shilling for business versus looking for discussion about it. It doesn't mean that valid points weren't raised but it does make you wonder if there's a little more going on there than it really being just a fellow reporting on the state of affairs on that tour. For sure there were complaints around then about the Stones become a bit of a parody of themselves but fwiw, there are many Stones fans who considered that '78 tour one of their best: the 7/18/78 Fort Worth, Texas concert was [filmed for posterity[/color">](http://www.amazon.com/Rolling-Stones-Some-Girls-Texas/dp/B005OGYH9A/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1367504444&sr=8-1&keywords=some+girls+texas]<span style=) and is ranked up there with the '69 shows immortalized in "Gimme Shelter" and the '72 infamous S.T.P. ("Exile") tour. I'm sure they were perhaps too loose and/or unprofessional-seeming (drugs would play a big part there) but that is to some extent their personae as well and what many fans love about them - they moaned when they came across as too slick and would rather have ragged, warts-and-all than "polished". (Perhaps a "Hamburg-era" Beatles vs an "Ed Sullivan" Beatles is not too far-fetched an analogy?) That writer's complaint about the songs they *didn't* play is also pretty funny considering how many diehard fans - whether of the Stones, Macca, whomever - complain about always having to hear the "warhorses" when they go to shows! They were touring behind Some Girls and did a bunch of songs off the album at the expense of some of the old tried and true. That's personally what I'd rather hear but yes, I can imagine some fans weren't happy about not hearing Satisfaction if that was the first time you'd seen them! I'm not a Stones "diehard" per se but they are a band I've loved musically as long as the Fabs. The Beatles got my heart and my obsession but I first picked up a guitar to play Satisfaction and Brown Sugar just as much as to play Revolution and Ticket To Ride. I got as big a thrill the first time I saw/heard to Let It Bleed as I did Abbey Road. If I'd had that experience of them of going to a show and them being totally out of it and appearing not to give a damn, I might think twice about going back. As mentioned already, bands have bad nights - it happens to everyone. But at end of the day, there's just SO much great music they've produced...so many memories attached to it....and the cat-wrangling involved to get the four of them - nevermind MICK TAYLOR! - together to do this one more time at their ages: it's not like Paul where it's basically solely up to him whether a tour happens or not. I do think this is the last go-round for them and I really think it'll be special. I hope you get in!

As fate would have it last night when I got off this site I flipped on the Palladia music channel and guess who was on it? The Stones at The Beacon from this past year i think and I have to say I enjoyed it but some of the songs were still much faster on the beat and it was still very hard to hear Mick sing, the guitars and back up singers were overpowering him but I still enjoy their music.

All I am saying is that they sucked when I saw them and I was disappointed, and obviously I was not alone. At the time I saw them I had not even seen Paul yet so I was not comparing them to him but on what I had became accustomed to by hearing their music from their albums. I also do not believe Paul needs anyone to be torn down to make him look better. Now if I had seen them since then maybe I would have been impressed and would feel better about seeing them, but that works both ways if they did not put on a terrible performance maybe I would have felt like the concert was worth seeing and paying the money for. My main point is that I still believe my remarks and assessment were justified. I am considering going to see them on this tour, I just hope I am not disappointed again. I don,t know if you read the article but at the show I was at they describe the Shoe's being hurled at Mick in the ultimate show of disrespect and that people don't do that unless they are unhappy with the band.
Then just don't go see them. I think McCartney is amazing. But I am not going to his concerts because I can't afford them, I cannot justify taking off work, and I believe if he can play Tulsa, Omaha, Des Moines, Regina and Winnipeg, he can play in Albuquerque. Since he seemingly won't, I am not going. You can choose to show your righteous indignation with the Stones by not attending their concerts. But like me, someone else will gladly purchase the ticket and go in your place.
I don't know man I have been watching the availability of tickets for Chicago and I can get 4 tickets 10 rows back, and I can get tickets in all ticket ranges except the lowest price range, does not seem to be selling that fast..I think they priced their show way too high.

If the Stones played Albuquerque, I would go. They are a legendary rock band. But yeah, everyone has a limit. If the tickets are beyond your comfort level, skip it. I LOVE McCartney, but the travel and ticket prices are beyond my comfort level. Same with for the Stones.

Kelly, I will be *amazed* if more $85s don't become available for any if not all three Chicago shows. Just keep your eyes/ears open and definitely register for the email notification if you haven't already. They definitely priced the shows too high and three dates in Chicago was not the best idea - am thinking the boys themselves probably just wanted to hang out at Buddy Guy's place for a few nights! They will no doubt also upgrade those in the rafters down into the more $$$ seats to make things look better. It will be interesting to see/hear how this all plays out.

Price is really not this issue i would just hate to drive 4 hours and pay the amount for the show it will take and then not like it. I can afford it but just don't want to feel like I did when I saw them in 1978, then feel like well you should have known. I will probably go.

I do see your point and respect it. My fave group is Cheap Trick and they consistently put on a great show. I love them every time. So that is important. FYI, I don't travel to see them either! They play Albuquerque fairly regularly, I am going June 1 to see them for $45!!
-
I respect that but I love to travel to see shows, I flew to Dallas for Paul, I generally put my driving limit to a 6 hour radius, Drives my wife nots I know but concerts are a hobby and a passion since I saw my very first one with my parents when I was around seven years old.. Marty Robbins...LOL but it got me hooked.

For me, that's a weird predicament.... I very much enjoy the Stones in concert... I've seen them 5 or 6 times.... They are good.... but not "$650 good"! But I wouldn't hesitate spending money on any of the cheaper ticket options, at $250 or less. But at the same time, if I was taking a 4-hour drive to see a concert, I'd want to be in the best seats. So, for me, it would be a tough call. But yeah, I'd say this may be the last chance you'll get to see them... So consider that especially.

If you got a pair of the $85s, would that (somewhat) mitigate any potential disappointment? A four-hour drive is certainly formidable but hopefully getting in the door for a fraction might ease other concerns...maybe? Maybe not - certainly understood either way. I do genuinely feel that you *won't* be disappointed. I'd offer a money back guarantee but I'm a little tapped out!!

Not sure I could handle driving 4 hours each way for those $85 mystery seats.... Yeah, you might wind up in the front pit.... but you also might wind up in the worst obstructed view upper level nosebleeds... So I'd be too paranoid about winding up in the s**t zone! I'd take the chance on those, if it was a local show.... but not for an 8-hour round trip drive!

I think that four hours is the round-trip length - I definitely wouldn't be driving 8 hours for mystery seats either!
-
To be fair it is more like 3.75 hours one way, the length of the drive does not concern me that much because I would probably spend the night in a hotel. I will probably do the 85.00 seats just so if I do feel I should not have went it will be easier to handle for my state of mind. I have a really busy concert summer planned thus far and I would love to add the Stones in there and be happy with it. as far as great seats I have been there and done it with Paul and many other bands so the nosebleeds would not kill me with this show. Now for Paul that is a different story. Being real close for shows anymore is not the highest priority for me.

I agree they really over estimated what they could garner as far as the total ticket price average, I think they could have got by with the price level one for just the front of the floor section but they should have dropped of a lot more on the price for level two three and four.

Plus, they should announce this is their last tour. BUT, they have done that in the past so many times, it rings hollow.

I agree

. But if the question is who do I like more, I'm a member on this community not the Stones.
let's not forget, the Stones charge for a board such as this.
I pay $20 a year for Elvis' official message board, and I don't get as much out of it as this place.

The Stones have never had a "last tour", "final tour", "farewell tour", etc.... Perhaps you're confusing them with The Who, who had a farewell tour, back in 1982. (before reuniting in 1989, and countless times since.)
