Bill:
deKooningartist:
Bill here in the U.S. I can not think of one high level professional position where the applicant is not required to prove their academic qualifications and previous work experience. Why has he been held to a different standard for the most important job??? With regards to the overall totals from According to Associated Press today with 99% of the vote in, approximately 66 million people voted for Obama and 59 million voted against him. That's approximately an 8 million difference. That's about the size of New Jersey. http://hosted.ap.org/specials/election_night_2008/election_map_basic/index.html 59 million people disagree with you Bill. That's almost 3 times the population of your entire country or just shy of the populaton of the entire UK that have questions regarding Obama and or disagreed with his policy To quote Obama: "That ain't chump change"
So what? Spin is any way you like, this was the biggest winning margin in the last 20 years with the biggest turnout in over 40. Funny how people are suddenly concerned about close margins now, after arguing that Bush had a mandate in 2004. Now do you still want to talk about double-standards? I'm not saying it was a landslide. Just saying it was the closest thing to one since 1988. And watching Republicans trying to spin their way out of that simple fact - especially after backing Mr 49% in 2000 - remains a great source of amusement. Keep it up. Oh, and if you want to talk about my country - we have a 95% voter turn out. If your guy had managed to get 8 million of the 36% who couldn't be bothered voting at all to shift their arses and take an interest, then he would have won. But he didn't. And no amount of parsing the figures is going to change that. If Republicans were genuine about their professed values of personal responsibility and initiative, then they'd take their licks, take a hard look at themselves and do their best to improve so they can come back better next time. Instead, they're acting like a bunch of crybabies, which was predictable, but disappointing all the same.
Just wondering, do you have some stack in our election? You seem to be pretty involved. I don't have to parse the figures. Just add 'em up. He won as of today by about 8 million votes. Is waa a great campaign and I have stated that several times on this thread. But, back to the original post, there are 59 million people that do have questions about him and because he would not produce any records to back up his claims, there were many people such as myself that did not feel comfortable voting for him. And by the way, the Republicans already started to re-group Ask anyone here in the States, when the Democratic Party is fired up - they win. When the Republican Party is fired up - they win. That's just the way it is. The U.S. is pretty split. That is obvious. Another question - you said the Republicans are acting like a bunch of crybabies??? And how do you conclude that???? : I have heard the opposite from the Republican party And the Democrats have not been whinning for the past 8 years? : Once again, I apllaud his campaign. I honestly hope he will live up to the expectations placed upon him and that he will be a terrific President. I don't wish him ill will like the so many Democrats have demonized Bush for the past 8 years. Obama will be my President when sworn in. As Bush is still my President
-
Well, it all depends on who you listen to, doesn't it? But I might suggest that auslanders like me see things with a different perspective. The crybabies I was referring to are on forums like this one where people just can't come to grips with the result. So they have finally figured out how unrepresentative the system is, yet the had no problem with the previous two results. With his popular vote this year, John McCain polled the second the second highest number of votes ever. You know who you could say the same thing about? John Kerry! So it's utterly dishonest to go talking about how close the election was this year if you weren't as concerned about 2004 which was even closer and 2000. But now we have the same people who claimed a clear mandate for Bush in 2004 saying that Obama's win in 2008 was too close. You can't have it both ways. Liars? Opportunists? Crybabies? You decide! Do I have some stack? I'm not sure what that means but as I have stated here several times before, the "Global financial crisis" did not originate in Sydney or Paris. It was a screwed up US policy that caused this and nothing else. Therefore, I have an interest. There are Australian troops fighting in America's wars in two countries. Therefore, I have an interest. It's the US president that presumes to be "leader of the free world." As a citizen of the free world, I have an interest. And, as always, if anyone wants to take up any aspect of Australian politics with me, they're most welcome to. I'm not going to adopt a "What's it to you?" attitude. No-one ever takes me up on that offer. I wonder why.
I honestly hope he will live up to the expectations placed upon him and that he will be a terrific President. I don't wish him ill will like the so many Democrats have demonized Bush for the past 8 years. Obama will be my President when sworn in. As Bush is still my President
With respect, I see no evidence of such hope or support. All I see is a bunch of relentless nitpicking that wasn't even relevant before the election and is completely redundant now. Why not give him a chance to live up to his promise insteading of dwelling on all this irrelevant nonsense about schoolwork?
-
I was born in the absolute heart of america. Not on the west coast or the east coast or the southern border or the northern border. I come from that part of the country where the most influential people in america come from. It is quite clear to me that a democratic party member has been elected to the office of the presidency with 2 out of 3 of the electoral votes and a popular vote margin that is greater than has been seen in a long time. Your republican leaders have already conceded the election and have offered their support! You are listening to far too much right wing conservative bias and stupidity from daytime AM radio stations in my opinion
-
John McCain:
I urge all Americans who supported me to join me in not just congratulating him, but offering our next president our good will and earnest effort to find ways to come together, to find the necessary compromises, to bridge our differences, and help restore our prosperity, defend our security in a dangerous world, and leave our children and grandchildren a stronger, better country than we inherited.
A man with class.

that was a lively debate the night of the election, in here and it seems lame that much of it was deleted.

I hope Barack Obama turns out to be the most successful president in our history. But even if it were to happen he still can't possibly live up to the expectations of far too may people. He is human and human beings can only do so much. We can't part oceans and we can't cause the planets in the universe to come crashing down on earth. There are some who think he can. He will have some supporters who will turn against him when they learn the truth: Barack Obama is a mere mortal. Moveon and the ACLU are looking for their piece of the pie. He's got to tell them to F' off. And for his administration to prosper he needs to stay as far away from Pelosi and Reid. They think that if the campaign for him wins, they own him. Others will be blinded by their loyalty yet understand that he is only human but still won't acknowledge errors or bad policy. To such people even Obama couldn't convince them he makes mistakes. There are others like me who will be pleasantly surprised when he attacks problems and solves them. In my lifetime I've never seen a president elect facing so much to do and so much damage to undo as Obama has waiting for him. Someone on tv said this might be the only election where the winner demands a recount. Obama ran a great campaign. Much of what worked for him was the fault of John McCain and the media. Never has someone been elected president who we know so little about as Barack Obama. The media didn't seem to care about his past. They actively campaigned for him in the hard news stories while Olbermann and Matthews had a contest to see who could get the most aroused when talking about Obama. Even Bill Maher said they both want to have sex with Obama. We know more about Sarah Palin than we know about Barack Obama. She still has the media frightened. That tells me she has the stuff that most Americans like. Behave now, I didn't mean what you think I meant. Obama is getting less news coverage than Palin while Biden is getting none. The media are so afraid of her coming back to defeat Obama in 2012. Obama has at least one mole that's part of his inner circle. He should tell Podesta to find out who it is and fire him or else I(Obama) will fire you and everyone else myself. He met privately with Bush the other day. That's always done soon after the election and the discussion is always private and between the two people and no one else. Obama made the mistake of telling at least one person from his inner circle what was discussed. Details were then anonymously leaked to the press. Bush has gone out of his way to make the transition smooth, he's done so like no other president before him and Obama gossips about the meeting to his buddies. The names of the top 100 people from what would be the McCain or Obama administration were given to Bush a while back so that the day after the election they are ready to go to work because they all had their background checks and security clearance. McCain put the subject of Wright off topic. He never made an issue of Obama's one page medical records, a note from his doctor. He's a smoker. If that was a Republican the media would demanded he show his records and get a current top to bottom doctor examination. There is no available records at either Columbia or Harvard for Obama. It's as if he never attend classes. Students from that era who would be in his class have no recollection of ever seeing him. He was President of the Harvard Law Review and there is not a single piece of work written or published by him. The writing style used in his book "Dreams from My Father" matches the writing style of Bill Ayers. Software on his website designed to make sure the name and address of the donor match the card on record was disabled and when someone in the media brought to the attention of a campaign manager they already knew about it and did nothing. The media wasn't interested in doing a little investigative journalism even though they were aware of all this. McCain knew all about his fund raising tactics but said nothing. If he don't care then the media should just leave it alone and concentrate on getting Obama elected.

Well, besides the American New New Deal or New Deal 2. (there are more countries beyond the USA... :wink, China has announced quite the same, 500000 milion euros (for China), Europe too, I guess Russia and Japan too. This seems that movies where the aliens attack and show the resistence all over the world. haha... USA has confirmed that will buy stocks of the companies instead of buying toxic debts, etc. So Taking control... being, if not the 51% shareholder, the main shareholder of certain big companies, becoming "public" so... a la Europe welfare public companies. Only that didn't happen with the banks!. Banks with the country as his biggest investor is what I call "ex-capitalism", not the hybrid model or something that has already happened before. And Europe it looks just the same but I guess it will happen before in the USA, cause things are worse there... Bye, bye capitalism/socialism, hybrid model... hello Ex-Capitalism. Well, not yet but almost.

Just having a discussion here pal. And those of us who didn't vote for him have expressed our concerns. Even Obama himself addressed this very problem. He realized he had to earn it. And what myself and others have posted are the prevailing concerns and. So I guess what you are saying...do as I say but don't do as I have done???? And by the way, I don't doubt there are more Auslanders that think as you do, but I can guarantee you not all agree with you. I have a friend in Sydney that works for a PR firm and stated he wouldn't even hire the guy for a public spokesperson because once he doesn't have a script to read, he stumbles and stammers to much when he's not reading from a teleprompter. BTW, he didn't like McCain either.

And, as always, if anyone wants to take up any aspect of Australian politics with me, they're most welcome to. I'm not going to adopt a "What's it to you?" attitude. No-one ever takes me up on that offer. I wonder why.
Australia is a great country and a fun place to visit. I have many friends there. I love the UK and now Oliver has me interested in Spain as well. But it's not my country. So therefore, I keep my political activities centered within my own borders and try to make changes within. Maybe you are doing the same within your own country? If you are not then maybe you should. I am not saying I am not interested in your countries politics. I just wouldn't get involved. If for example, I felt your country was adversely effecting my country, then I would work within my own country and work with my representatives to address my concerns in this way.
Bill:
But now we have the same people who claimed a clear mandate for Bush in 2004 saying that Obama's win in 2008 was too close. You can't have it both ways. Liars? Opportunists? Crybabies? You decide!
If I did voice an opinion regarding another countries politics and someone from that country who lives there, makes the sacrifices and pays the taxes disagreed with my opinion, I wouldn't turn around and call them liars and opportunists and crybabies because they disagreed with me.
Bill:
Why not give him a chance to live up to his promise insteading of dwelling on all this irrelevant nonsense about schoolwork?
No one said they were not giving him a chance, once again we are stating our concerns. Maybe someone's resume for a professional position may not be relevant in your country, but it is to me and many others ...like the 59 million. But it didn't matter to the 66 million so I hope they are right. Obama has a lot to live up too.

(Just having fun with ya ) Personally speaking regarding the Republican Party and what I've heard from the conservative faction, they have been extremely critical of the last 6-7 years. The problem they express is they have lost their conservative values by trying to become more Moderate similar to the DLC faction of the Democratic Party. Personally I believe in many of Republican values. But I don't agree 100% with everything they stand for. I'm with the Dems on gun control. I just don't get the whole hunting thing. And I'm for Gays and Lesbians having the right to marry. These are two contested issues within the conservative movement that I don't agree with. But I do agree with strong fiscal conservatism and I do consider myself a Federalist. I am excited about the prospect of Michael Steele heading the RNC.

What is the philosphy of the republican/conservative party? You all are in total disaray with no message. The majority of the american public has caught on to your party of corruption and incompetence. But I do agree with strong fiscal conservatism and I do consider myself a Federalist. I am excited about the prospect of Michael Steele heading the RNC.
Fiscally moderate? That is whats wrong with you....you are a democrat and don't recognize it. The dems have been having to clean up after the republicans since the 1930s. Welcome to the party of grown ups!
