Plus: I never said I had any "football knowledge"
I'm not from nor never been to Spain, but I've been a Barcelona supporter since watching them in the 1979 Cup Winners Cup final. But I didn't start hating Real Madrid until Hugo Sanchez played there in the mid-80s.
You might remember Hans Krankl, then... I think he scored in that final Hugo Sanchez however also has an austrian-connection; he played for austrian club FC Linz at the end of his career!

Ah yes. Krankl scored Barca's fourth goal against Dusseldorf. FK Austria Wien reached the European Cup semifinals that same season. Didn't know Hugo Sanchez played in Austria. There used to be a television program over here in the late-70s/early 80s called "Soccer Made In Germany". They showed a lot of Bundesliga matches. Remember Bruno Pezzey? He played sweeper for Eintracht Frankfurt as well as for Austria. I remember watching him score two goals in an exciting friendly against England. Austria won 4-3. Strange, but that Bundesliga show used to show internationals as well, but they showed more games involving the Austrian national team than they did the West German team. They showed Argentina with a teenage Maradona demolish the Austrians 5-1 at the Prater Stadion. Maradona scored two or three goals in that one. Hmmm... let's see... Koncilla was the regular first choice keeper, Pezzey I think was captain (not sure), Herbert Prohaska later went to Inter Milan, Robert Sara... there was another defender named Obermeyer, I think... Walter Schachner was a fairly good forward... Kurt Jara played in the Bundesliga, for MSV Duisburg iirc... Roland Hattenberger, didn't he play for Stuttgart?...... Anyways, yeah, I remember quite a few Austrian players from then. They were a quite descent side. Qualified for the World Cup in '78 and '82. Don't remember who the coach was though. Austria also had a very good FIFA referee in Erich Linemayer.

It's getting closer... I hope my predictions for tomorrow are more accurate. But far be it from me to complain. I'm happy Germany won, my nervous system suffered a lot, though. I can'z enlighten the situation after the game. Oliver Bierhoff said that he rushed in when he saw that Mertesacker got kicked. He claims he wanted to calm the situation down but apparently he failed. Mmh, well I think things like that shouldn't happen even if Borowski should have made a stupid remark or gesture. He doesn't strike me as someone who would intentionally provoke others. No one seems to care much about it, here, though, so they probably think it was all handbags, too.

I`m impressed you know a lot about austrian football... austrias 78 coach`s name was (and still is ) Heinz Senekowitsch. Prohaska went to Inter Milan, right; but then he also went to AS Roma which was the most successful phase in his career (winning the italian title with Roma); in the 90s he was a very successful coach (he qualified with Austria for the world cup 98 in france); but after losing 0:9 ops: against Spain in 1999 he quit; now he`s our football expert on TV, and quite a good one I think! Kurt Jara also played in Spain for Valencia before he went to Duisburg... Did you know that in the early 1930s, when austria was the best team in the world (we called it the wunderteam), the brazilians were called "the austrians of south america"... it`s hard to believe, isn`t it? We could also talk about austrian football of today, but hold on... there is no such thing as austrian football of today. It`s dead! ops:

I don't want to be the petty know-it-all Piefke , but I am quite sure his name is Helmut Senekowitsch! Back in the days of Cordoba 1978, our coach was Helmut Schön (that was actually the last match under his direction), so it was the two Helmuts meeting there. Senekowitsch later, in 1982, coached Eintracht Frankfurt in the German Bundesliga for a few months.

like the russian ref in the Portugal and Holland game todays ref had a good game but with only one mistake today Ballack should have been booked and Figo should have been sent off.

I don't remember Senekowitsch. The one I remember was named Stotz (?). I don't think he coached the '82 team however. From what I've read, the Wunderteam was a great side during the 1930s. Matthias Sindelar was the big name if I remember. I think many fancied them to be a strong contender for the 1938 World Cup, but the Anschluss allowed the Third Reich to force many of Austria's star players to play for Germany instead. I remember Prohaska at Roma. They only won Serie A in 1983 during that time. But Prohaska wasn't around the following year because I don't remember seeing him in the '84 European Cup final against Liverpool. And I forgot that he coached Austria in France '98! The only thing I remember about that Austrian team was that they scored three goals, one in each of their first round matches (1-1 Cameroon / 1-1 Chile / 1-2 Italy)...... and each one of those goals came in 2nd half stoppage tme!

Halftime England 0-0 Portugal Very quiet, this board.

If England should somehow pull this one off (rooney expelled, England down to ten men), they would go into the semifinal against Brazil/France with only Crouch and Walcott as the options at striker. The genius work of Sven Goran Eriksson. : Jermain Defoe (and a nation) must be shaking their heads in wonderment.

I repeat... England and penalties For all you England supporters out there, there's an amazing observation someone pointed out concerning English clubs in UEFA finals and the National Team in major tournaments when penalty-kicks were needed to decide a winner. From the position of the TV camera that's showing the main international feed (usually up in the press area section): Whenever English teams have been involved in shootouts that have taken place on the LEFT SIDE of the pitch, English teams have lost: 1980 CWC Arsenal-Valencia 1990 World Cup England-Germany 1996 EURO England-Germany 1998 World Cup England-Argentina 2000 UEFA Arsenal-Galatasaray 2004 EURO England-Portugal But when the shootout took place on the RIGHT SIDE as the main camera looks down, English sides have won: 1984 UEFA Tottenham-Anderlecht 1984 ChC Liverpool-Roma 1996 EURO England-Spain 2005 CL Liverpool-Milan Get it? Of course, it's all coincidence, right?
