TCM and Classic Film Discussion in General
-
I don't have TCM because I've always been too cheap to pay for extra channels, but it's the one that I seriously think about. I watched a bit of it on a recent trip and can see how it's addictive. I really do like the old movies.

I love TCM ...and just now realized and remembered what the greatest one must have been. Can you think of which one I'm thinking of ?
Steve, are you referring to the greatest movie??? If so, you know that is going to be debatable! My first guess is that you are thinking of The Wizard of Oz .
I was actually thinking of a particular classic movie at the time...and then about 5 minutes after I posted...I thought of another that I liked just as well!...and then 2 minutes later....

Violent thunderstorms here tonight with threat of power outages, but thankfully the electric held out for Marty! Brilliant performance by Ernie - LOVED every minute of this film!

Who remembers when AMC used to show nothing but classic movies -- commercial-free? I wre my VCR out back in those days.
Audi, I vividly remember when AMC aired nothing but commercial-free, classic movies. I was young at the time and AMC was my favorite channel. Along with you, I sent my VCR up in flames recording from this channel! ops: I was very disappointed when AMC began adding commercials into their programming, then eventually changing their format. Once in a while I come across a good movie on AMC, but to be honest, the commercials kill it for me.
I'm an ENORMOUS Jerry Lewis fan. Imagine my delight when they would air all those Martin & Lewis and '60s Lewis-solo comedy classics!

Having triplets, I tend to lose track of time, but at some point a few years back, our cable company decided to make TCM a higher tiered (non-basic) channel. At that time, I had been subscribing to the highest tier/premium package for the family room (one cable box) and had basic cable (just the line from the wall) throughout the rest of the house. Having three children, I spend a great deal of time in the kitchen, where I could no longer receive TCM. In addition, at the end of the evening, winding down in my bed, I could no longer have a look at TCM. I think I may have made it about two weeks before finally upgrading the rest of the house to the highest tier/premium package - that's when I knew I was addicted...I had to have it!!! ops:

I do not recall seeing a lot of Martin and Lewis on AMC, but the first Jerry Lewis movies I saw were indeed on AMC and I recorded both...Cinderfella and The Nutty Professor.

The Family Jewels with Jerry Lewis playing several parts is one of my favorites of his.

The Best Years of Our Lives 8 PM EDT For me, this film is a "must see" and an Essential in my classic film collection. This is one of those rare films with several poignantly powerful character studies. An incredible performance from Harold Russel in his Oscar-winning performance!

I haven't seen that film in ages. There are many great things to be learned in this movie. I just happened to tune into one of my favorite parts where the young sailor was trying to explain that he only wanted to fit back in and feel normal with his war injury...while many people around him were having more problems with it...than he was.

Harold Russell was incredibly moving in this film! LOVE that in addition to his Oscar for Best Actor in a Supporting Role, he was also given an honorary award for bringing hope and courage to veterans due to his appearance in the film.

Saturday, 4th of August Beginning at 6 AM EDT Summer Under the Stars: Marilyn Monroe Twelve movies including: Niagara, Some Like It Hot, and How to Marry a Millionaire. If you like Niagara Falls, do try to catch the short, Travel Talks: Mighty Niagara shown just after the movie Niagara. LOVE Marilyn!!!
-
Loving Summer Under the Stars with Claude Rains! What a joy to see Mr. Skeffington - one of the best film endings ever!!!
-
Just finished watching the moving performance of the great Sidney Poitier in To Sir, with Love. Fantastic glimpse into the music and style of that time period! Powerful film with a great ending!

The last TCM film I saw was "Paris Blues" with Sidney Poitier and Paul Newman, just yesterday. They were pretty convincing as jazz musicians, and the wonderful Paris settings were authentic, it WAS Paris. I saw part of the Marilyn Monroe fare, "The Prince and the Showgirl" which I'd not seen all the way through, previously, and "Gentlemen Prefer Blondes" which I'd never seen. Enjoyed them a lot. Wish I'd caught "Bus Stop" as I've only seen that once or twice. "Pal Joey" with Frank Sinatra, Kim Novak and Rita Hayworth is on TCM tonight at 8 p.m. EST, it's a real charmer. I can tout that one highly.
-
Just finished watching Pal Joey. LOVE when the camera zooms in on Sinatra's beautiful eyes as Novak is just about to finish disrobing... Perfect description, Susy......"Charmer!"
-
Midnight... Key Largo Humphrey Bogart, Edward G. Robinson, Lionel Barrymore, and Lauren Bacall.

I watched Pal Joey it was a charming watch and the music was awesome

I approve of that post! James Mason's and Judy Garland's "A Star is Born" airs tonight at 12:30 past midnight. It's wonderful. I saw it fairly recently for the first time and it's telling that I'd like to see it again. I also saw Barb Striesand's remake several times recently on t.v., it comes off in a bad light compared to James's and Judy's And most of the songs were awful, although later I did find one or two I had thought were awful playing again in my head, snippets of them. "Evergreen" composed by the recently deceased Marvin Hamlish is fantastic... Kris Kristofferson offered the ultimate eye candy...he's reason to see this, just him. In fact I found a VHS (how retro) video of this for sale for one dollar at the library and snapped it up to view Kris. I've got a little t.v. that shows videos.

The Kristofferson role was originally intended for Elvis. Too bad his manager made him not accept the role.
