2012 Olympic/Paralympic Games talk and trivia

Stand by for the clearance sale to end all clearance sales. With the Games ending Sunday night our Sainsbury's store has pushed all their souvenir goods to the front of the store. Clothing, stuffed toys, crockery, banners, flags anything with London 2012 or the Olympic logo on it. I overheard the store staff asking their lead saleswoman for these items if they were to be discounted - and when pressed she quietly muttered "50% - Monday" With several more weeks of the school holiday to go still some bargain summerwear may be had.... If you fancy some cheap breakfastwares large cereal bowls and mugs bearing the London 2012 branding are £1.25 and £1.00 respectively with a set of four egg cups £3.00 And that's even before Monday..... Expect similar discounting at all the other major retailers. Martin

Press casting their eyes forward to the Closing ceremony now. Quote from someone in the know.... "If the Opening Ceremony had been a wedding, the Closing Ceremony would be the wedding reception....." another quote: "Cheeky, cheerful and thrilling...." Papers still full of lists of rumoured participants, albeit content still officially embargoed. One part out of the control of Danny Boyle's artistic control will be the 2016 Games hosts "teaser" section - I assume Rio De Janeiro won't stray far from their world famous Carnival/Samba Parade for inspiration: http://www.rio-carnival.net/ Martin

Notice in the new Telegraph article that there is a mention of a previous piece written in the paper which was 'scarily accurate' in it's predictions of the artists included in this party to end all parties celebrating British music....one of those was a certain Paul McCartney esq might be brought on stage to trot out another from the Beatles catalogue, alongside Paul Weller, ray Davies, Adele, Kate Bush, The Who etc......probably not, hopefully not if he's not going to do a vocal warm up beforehand, but you never know....

Here's the Telegraph article from which most of today's quotes have been drawn: http://www.telegraph.co.uk/culture/music/rockandpopfeatures/9462324/London-2012-Olympics-Closing-Ceremony-Its-going-to-be-cheeky-cheesy-and-thrilling.html Reading carefully, the suggestion of Paul comes not from the musical director's interview but rather the imaginings of journalist Neil McCormick's speculation. The musical director David Arnold was only prepared to admit that Elgar's music shows up at one point. other than that he wanted the details kept a close secret like a Christmas present. Martin

Paul has just helped inspire another Team GB Gold medal: In the Equestrian Dressage, Grand Prix Freestyle (to music) Individual competition. Charlotte Dujardin riding Valegro to a selection of film music has taken the Gold Medal. Part of that selection was a segment from Live And Let Die which was used twice. http://www.bbc.co.uk/sport/0/olympics/18913470 Martin PS - Not the firework/explosion sequence
-
And there's a gold medal for a girl from North Wales... in tae-kwondo, of all things!!
-
over £10 billion pounds spent for what!! something intangible well forgive me, must be teh acountant in me but i would prefer something tangible like over 100'000 houses built. But thanks to the scots tony and gordon and other so called socialists we will overpriced and empty stadiums .

I just saw that on the news! ...not to mention U. Bolt (The Lightning Bolt) from Jamaica...and a long list of other moments that made these olympics incredibly awesome for everyone!

Props to the guy who finished his leg (no pun intended) of a relay race after he broke his leg (fibula) during that run

Whst is the red patch on the back of some women divers?
-
If Paul is performing at the Closing Ceremony, it must be a British super group type of thing. Brian is in Los Angeles as of this morning. Abe has been on holiday.

Whst is the red patch on the back of some women divers?
I googled this query, and you're not alone in asking the question. The best fit answer I could find is this:
It's 'kinesio tape' a stretchy fabric tape that's designed to support injured muscles and decrease muscle pain. And it's not just the divers who are using it. Every time I switch on, there are runners / pole-vaulters / weightlifters / volleyballers etc plastered with the stuff. It was designed by Kenzo Kase, a Japanese chiropractor and acupuncturist, and at the Beijing Olympics, rolls and rolls of the stuff in crazy colours were given out to physios. Funnily enough, that's when sales started soaring. XD Apparently the jury's out on whether it's much more effective than the various strapping/elastic tapes which have been around for years. But it looks good and is definitely more flexible than the old-style stuff, so feels better. The rest of its popularity you can probably chalk up to 'lucky charm mentality' and fashion. =D

yes #bolt# was awesome..amazing athlete. im not so sure about womens football mind..very difficult to watch, they are so slow..fair play that they want to 'have a go' but the standard of play is seriously bad......perhaps the men should allowed to have a syncronised swimming team if the women insist on taking on male dominated sports. but hey, like i say..fair play to the women.they are entitled to play whatever they want however poor it is to watch..

Yep...thanks for the info. I would prefer skin colored tape myself but these were pretty RED on their backs usually just above the swimsuit bottom.

I don't know about your country but soccer has never been a male dominated sport : Just curious.....do you ever have anything nice to say? Just an observation.....
