Practicing random acts of kindness & not talking about them is its own reward.

100 thumbs up for people who are and have been voluntarily helping in many different ways, people who are dealing with natural disasters.

I have voluntarily spent hundreds upon hundreds upon hundreds of hours studying life broadly and deeply and sharing my findings online. Some people tell me that I woke their brains and hearts up again. It makes me feel good!

Steve... You are very inspirational!!! You are one of The Peaceful Messengers of our Earth. We are lucky to have someone like you Peace and Love

I consider it part of the way in which I have shared my time and efforts and finances in the Proverbial Tithing Fashion. I have wound up over the years, actually devoting more than 10% of my time and energy to these efforts. Now, that I'm retired and on a fixed income, I have only and mostly time and energy to share.

Just saw that Elon Musk is helping in Puerto Rico, with their energy needs and is speaking with the governor, about restoring their grid. https://electrek.co/2017/10/15/tesla-powerpacks-puerto-rico/

Thank you Steve! We give to the food bank every few months or so. And regularly donate used clothing & other stuff in good shape to Last Chance Ranch Thrift Store. This place is run by all volunteers & animals for adoption range from cats, dogs, birds to horses & more. An excellent no kill shelter.

I was raised to believe that it's wrong to talk about charity or good deeds, but I don't see what harm it does.  When celebrities talk about their charities, cynics will say they are only doing it for publicity.  But if it brings awareness to the cause, they should do it.  Maybe we're not celebrities on this site, but talking about something good and positive rather than all the negativity that's already all over the place can't be a bad thing.

I was going to post about the police officer who went out of his way to help out the children of a couple who died on Thanksgiving, but that one is too important to risk getting deleted. So I'll talk about some of those evil Chinese communists instead.

I was in the hospital a couple of months ago and the people there saved my life. Cynics would say they were just doing their jobs, but I watched a lot of people, from idolized surgeons to the old ladies who mop the floor, go above and beyond to make me more comfortable and/or keep me from freaking out.

The first hospital knew they could not treat me properly and transferred me to a better hospital. That might seem like common sense, but in my mind, they did a very good deed. They could have worried that moving me might be an insurance liability, but they chose to do what was better for me instead of think about money.

My surgeon was off duty when I came in. I'm not rich or famous. In fact, I was just another Jane Doe at the point, or Wong Xiao Ming, but he went to work because he knew I needed him. It turns out he's not a golfer, but whatever his hobbies are, he thinks helping people are a higher priority.

Everyone knew I was a foreigner. It's pretty obvious. The nurses especially went out of their way to make me feel at home. Maybe not really at home. It was a hospital. But less like a foreigner in a foreign country. The head nurse in the recovery ward was an older woman who basically adopted me. She was my protector and kept the more inexperienced doctors away from me. In China, like anywhere else, doctors outrank nurses, but all the younger doctors were afraid of her. She read to me when I couldn't read and stayed with me while I ate their styrofoam hospital food. I'm sure she had other things to do.

One of the old ladies who cleaned the rooms found out that I was a singer, so she sang traditional Chinese songs while cleaning. Maybe the singing was as much for her, but I never heard her when she was anywhere else. She even taught me “Ode to the Red Plum Blossom”. How often does anyone teach you a traditional Chinese song while you're in the hospital? It's mostly the little things that make a big difference.

My twin granddaughters are learning at an early age (4 1/2 years old) to give to others. They gathered together 3 big baags of toys they no longer play with, all in good condition and their mom took their toy donations to Goodwill.

So sorry to hear you were in the hospital.  How are you doing?  Sending prayers your way Hailey   I will try to find some of your posts to try and get up to speed.  It really sounds like your ordeal.  I love that head nurse for looking out for you!

They sound so sweet, under the circumstances.  Hope you are feeling better!

Maybe the singing was as much for her, but I never heard her when she was anywhere else. She even taught me “Ode to the Red Plum Blossom”. How often does anyone teach you a traditional Chinese song while you're in the hospital? It's mostly the little things that make a big difference.

Thank you for your concern.  I'm much better than I was.  I'm mostly working on stamina right now.  I want to be able to walk around the block without stopping to rest.  With any luck, I'll be able to go back to work after Chinese New Year.

The nurses were great.  The doctors were, too, but I spent more time with the nurses.  The doctors came and went quickly, like men, while the nurses were nurturing and supportive.  Everyone says that nurses are the backbone of any hospital, and it's true.

Good luck finding any posts.  This place is more messed up than I am.
