Very cool. Unless it takes a side trip across the ocean, I won't be as lucky.

The UK is being gripped by the attraction of following the live stream of the Olympic Torch relay on the BBC News web-site: http://www.bbc.co.uk/torchrelay The web-page offers - at least in the UK - a continuous stream following the torch relay - both runners, and the coach transitions from town to town. As the banner headline proclaims: 70 Days 8,000 miles 8,000 runners The runners are a mix of nominated persons local to the days events, past and current Olympians, and celebrities. The nominated runners are a mix of people with triumph and tragedy in their lives and persons known and lauded for charitable fund raising or volunteer work each local to the town where the torch relay is passing on the day. The web-site offers a live text commentary describing the reasons why each runner has been nominated. It also allows persons interested to locate their nearest day and route with detailed timings to allow us to attend to watch. The crowds are out in force wherever the torch is run, even at 06.00 in Bristol today they were ten deep just to catch a glimpse. As an international event I'd love to learn if this stream is being allowed world-wide - perhaps someone can feed back - often this type of stream is restricted to UK viewers only Each relay runner has their own golden torch which - apparently for an extra personal cost the runner can keep as a memento - or, controversially, flog on eBay It's the flame that is important - that is securely backed up by several Davey lamps on the support vehicle and those are used while the relay transitions from town to town. The torch has failed only once so far, which was put down to a mechanical glitch on the torch rather than the British weather, but the back-up flame was used promptly to get things going quickly. The torch comes through my locality on the 30th June - at midday on a weekend Saturday - our town has a whole programme of associated events planned - and the relay takes it's lunch break in town as well so on this evidence the town will be heaving with people wanting their personal glimpse. I'm hoping to get along but will have to get in early if I want a spot on a rail Anyone else planning to watch their local route? Anyone actually running the torch? Martin

Looks like the stream should be visible world-wide - if not on this web-page somewhere else - as the text commentary is quoting thoughts from viewers world-wide. Mexico, USA, Bangkok, Greece, Singapore to name a few. The stream is live through the day, from about 06.00 - 20.00 UK time so there plenty of time zone overlap to looksee yourselves. Martin

The day ended with the Queen's grand-daughter Zara Phillips carrying her torch on her horse Toytown down the race track at Cheltenam Race Course to light the overnight caldron. She's been chosen as a current Olympian taking part in the Equestrian eventing: http://www.telegraph.co.uk/sport/olympics/olympicsvideo/9286411/London-Olympics-2012-torch-relay-Zara-Phillips-carries-torch-on-horseback-in-Cheltenham.html Her image was selected by most news editors over that of Drogba for the daily news pages. I laughed at one Tweet bemoaning the presence of foreigners in the torch relay, specifically Will.i.am and Drogba - whoever tweeted that may have to get used to people from other countries sharing a part in "our Olympics" Martin

So you won't be dressing the shop-front and opening early as the torch relay passes through Whitby on June 18th then? The torch comes through town from 09.40 before joining the North Yorkshire Moors Railway for a rail trip to Pickering. Put on an "Olympic Torch" special meal from the weekend before and make a killing. Something coated in a "Golden" batter, maybe with a fiery filling - perhaps a fillet of fish marinaded in curry paste? Check out that web-site - the torch and it's parade of vehicles - including an off camera parade of floats from Coca Cola, Samsung and other offical sponsors draws huge crowds wherever it goes. Many will stay in town afterwards.... Martin

i seriously admire your plucky bulldog spirit martin, but there will be no celebrations in my shop.infact if anyone comes in wearing 'union jack' colours they will be charged for salt and vinegar!.. i hate the british flag and all it stands for and i hate royalty and the queen even more than that...throw in the completely overhyped and dispicable 'olympics' and we have the summer from hell all lined up. thank god for the european championships and open golf!

So in the last month or so we have seen the following... -- The Olympic Torch went out on the third day of the relay. http://www.guardian.co.uk/sport/2012/may/21/olympic-flame-goes-out-torch -- An athletics event in Manchester saw the 100m hurdle dash be contested with only 9 hurdles on the track (there's supposed to be 10). http://sports.yahoo.com/news/hurdles-blunder-britain-london-olympics-195241733--spt.html -- The London Olympic Committee tried to get Keith Moon to perform at the opening ceremony even though he's been dead for 34 years. http://www.nme.com/news/the-who/63639 The London Games are still over two months away and they're already going down as the most memorable in history!

Doctor Who fans all a twitter that Matt Smith will be first torch bearer in Cardiff Saturday morning: http://www.london2012.com/torch-relay/torchbearers/ Not showing in the list of torch bearers but many celebs don't, maybe to minimise excesssive crowds? The route map shows that'll be down the Pierhead by the National Assembly buildings, an area commonly used for filming Doctor Who and Torchwood episodes. Martin
