Moon walker astronaut Scott Carpenter has passed away, at age 88
Scott was one of the Mercury 7 with John Glenn and others who were the first American astronauts in the early 60's to orbit the Earth. It was the Apollo program in the late 60's and other astronauts who were the ones to walk on the moon. God Bless His Soul

Cuban American Pulitzer Prize for Fiction winning author Oscar Hijules, wrote the wonderful "The Mambo Kings Sing Songs of Love" for which he won the Pulitzer. One of my favorite novels. I need to read his others, too. He was 62, felled by a heart attack while playing tennis in N.Y.C.

Maxine Powell, 98, "Motown's Chief of Charm"--she headed the Artist Development department at Detroit's famous Motown studios, for many years. Berry Gordy's daughter had attended Maxine's charm school and they whisked her to Motown. She taught Marvin Gaye not to sing with his eyes closed, taught artists how to walk, speak in public and behave (many artists need that now!), and much more. She had a really good gig. She said she always loved it.

Noel Harrison of England, a 1960s singing star and actor ("The Girl From U.N.C.L.E" ), He was Rex Harrison's ( "My Fair Lady") son. Paul McCartney was at a London club to see Noel on stage when he heard a vocal duo perform "Those Were the Days," which later became a huge hit for Mary Hopkin after Paul produced her version.

Thinking of all the victims of Typhoon Haiyan across the Philippines, esp in Tacloban City. Counting our blessings that my wife's immediate family, brother, sister-in-law, nephews and nieces and their house staff - all residents of that fair City have survived the storm. It's been a dreadful few days waiting for them to source a means to let the family know of their fate. Their homes and businesses are no more, completely destroyed and they are presently hunkered down in the ruins of their property waiting for the relief efforts to enable them to progress their recovery. They have family and other accommodation options elsewhere but the next few weeks while they salvage their remaining property and put together a plan will be an uphill struggle. The nieces and nephews were attending local colleges/universities but those are gone completely along with their coursework and progress records. We feel helpless at the moment - well, we are in truth. We cannot send financial assistance that will reach them personally, all local remittance services have gone and the local bank branch that facilitated money transfers is matchwood. All we can do is wait at this time - we will be able to help them rebuild or relocate, whatever they eventually choose to do, but for now they face more immediate issues of survival. Merlinda's brother is not in the best of health suffering chronic asthma and it his needs we fear most for. Martin

^ How terrible for the people there & what a relief for you & yours to get word about family. Prayers for all.

The devastation seems huge and of course we have only seen a little bit of the area affected. The last thing the people need is another storm but one seems intent on hitting them. £10 million from the UK government is quite frankly pathetic and I say that as an opponent of the vast increase in foreign aid ( ie money going to end up in corrupt peoples pockets), disaster aid is a completely different matter. The Philippine government has a huge and thankless task ahead, when they communications are down it isn't mobile phone masts it is the road, rail and even airports that are damaged. Typical of the guardian though to start moaning about climate change again and not the human tragedy. Glad that so far your missues family are safe martin.
