Thanks for getting us such an interesting article.
The writer was right. John at least was an equal opportunity critic bringing up his own songs that he didn't like. John's sometimes jealosy of Paul really stood out especially when he was crying in his beer over the fact that Paul never took the time to help with his songs (e.g Across the Universe). Actually I think Paul's "2nd voice" was instrumental in making many of John's great songs even better (e.g. No reply). By the way, I love John's "It's Only Love" that he was critical about.
I love some of the "granny songs" of Paul's that John mocked. They would include When I'm 64 (fantastic song), Lovely Rita and Ob La Di. And how can you not love Paperback Writer and Let It Be. Both were massive hits. Even Yoko Ono mentioned that John was frustrated how Paul could just so often just come out with those "melodies" out of his head. George Martin several times mentioned that he had to reinforce to John that his stuff was fantastic too.
This article didn't mention the early Paul stuff that John thought was garbage. Classic example was "World Without Love" which John basically didn't want the Beatles to record. Great luck for Peter Asher (Peter and Gordon) when it went #1 all around the world. John's instincts (as was Paul's often) wasn't always good on songs like World Without Love at all. This was early on and Paul and John made massive amounts of money on it.
