EGYPT STATION

Okay, I've had just one listen to each new tune, so this is REALLY preliminary, but... "I Don't Know" initially strikes me as the sort of generic Paul ballad that we usually get when he writes a song for a movie or video game, etc. And the melody is oddly flat for Paul. It's not terrible by any means, but I can't imagine it as a successful single. I kind of feel similarly about "Come On to Me" -- kind of a generic Paul rocker, not at all bad but also not at all instantly memorable. The raucous vibe is nice, but nothing about it feels special. I do sense a marketing strategy here -- one track for adult contemporary radio and another for however many rock stations are still hanging on. Of course, 2 tracks don't make an album, but was hoping to love these the way I loved the title song to "New" when it was first released. And it does strike me as odd that these are coming out nearly 3 months before the album drops. I can't imagine anyone but hardcore fans still remembering these tunes in September.
Bruce, I agree with you...the generic movie ballad comment especially. Neither is bad, but neither is great. That said, over the past couple of releases, more often than not the first songs out have been middle of the pack, with the real gems on the album.

Agreed with Bruces' assesment 100%.

I instantly love the two new offerings, but of the 2 it is "I dont Know" that has stuck in my head. "Come on to Me" guitars could be a little more raw on the studio recording but it is a fine catchy song and I am keenly anticipating the album release. Hopefully it will chart decently here in Australia given his recent triumphant return tour of December 2017

Listened to both a few times now. I like ‘come on to me’ better. It sounds like Macca could really do a dirty-raw-live version of this. Not sure what it’s about lol.
Not sure, huh?
If this was mid-1967 or mid-1968, I’d say he wrote the song for Linda! Fits their scenarios at the time completely!
I think it would fit for Nancy too.

Surprised how quiet this thread is tbh ! Am I missing something ?
Quiet? There’s been more activity on this thread (and all the others) since this new board was created! Lol!

Yeah, 11 years ago! Lol!

Hi everyone! Got my delux vinyl pre-order on yesterday! I just thought the 2 singles were alright, liked Come On To Me best but even that, maybe it'll grow on me. The album will be sweet though, no doubt.
I think Paul's the only artist out today who I would anticpate and pre-order a new album from 3 months early

There is a female voice on the background vocals on "IDK"
-
who is that?
-
is that the first female voice on a Mccartney recording since Linda?

I'm glad I'm not the only one that thought that. As I listened to it for the first time last night I was somewhat disappointed because both songs sound very flat, for a McCartney tune. The ballad "I Don't Know" kind of just meanders and reminds me of "I Want to Come Home," which he wrote for a movie soundtrack a few years back - which is ground McCartney has already covered - something that he rarely does. There's nothing really catchy or memorable about "IDK." "Come On To Me," though it is a rocker, is not very memorable either, with nothing really catchy to keep me interested. I was an instant fan of every album's lead single since I became a McCartney fan around the time of Driving Rain, but these two new songs just fall flat for me. I hope the rest of the album doesn't sound like this. Even the cover art isn't very original. It looks like George Harrison's album cover from 1982, 'Gone Troppo.' I wish I was alive during his heyday - or even the 1980's when his voice was a little stronger. This album is the first album that you can really start to tell he's getting up there in age. I've listened to both songs a handful of times since last night and I'm just disappointed that I waited 5 years for this. I expected it to be better. I agree with the post above - neither song is bad, but neither song is great.

I just heard the two new songs and wow! the second one "I Don't Know" sounds how I feel right. Paul is so expert at songwriting! I love his style! I cannot wait for this new album to come out!

Hi kapoo! Missed you!
I like Come On To Me the best. Love the lyrics and that Paul has the guts to write something like that in this oh so PC world!

A friend of mine sent this. Check out the symbol to the right of the song title!

Does anyone have news on the deluxe box set/luxury box for this album? Super hyped for it

I like "Come On To Me" quite a lot but I am absolutely in love with "I Don't Know"!
No idea why but this song moves me to tears each time I listen to it! After more years than I care to remember you are still touching my heart with your beautiful music! Thank you, Paul!

Just listened to "Come On To Me" on Sirius Radio on my way for a coffee run. It played at 6:00am Eastern time.
It sounded good on the radio. As far as sounding like any other Macca song, my first impulse was that it had a "Hello Goodbye" kind of feel. Repetitive in the lyrics for sure but catchy.
Since I'm more of an album kind of guy, I will hold off on buying the single and wait till the full CD is available in early September. Just hope that Egypt Station blends well from track to track with great sounds and that the Producer, Greg Kurstin, was "honest" with Paul throughout all the sessions. I like the fact that Paul doesn't have any special "guests" on the album. Sometimes when that happens, Paul can be guilty of "honoring his guests" to the detriment of the album. I think of Flaming Pie and songs like "Really Love You" and "Used to Be Bad"where he had far better alternatives.
PS I hope Sirius doesn't overplay these first 2 songs. Hearing them occassionally will be fine with me until I can digest the flow of the whole album.

I think it might be Paul's voice we hear. Maybe they sped it up like they did on Four Five Seconds.

well, that would be clever.... he would do that wouldn't he?
After multiple listens, for me, "IDK" is a winner, big time grower.... the hook in the cord shift as he sings "I can take anymore" line is burrowing in my brain right now and I can't get it out. The more I listen, the more I like this one.
The piano intro is superb as is the bass playing....

“Come On To Me” is currently #38 on iTunes!

I listened to and watched the first 2 videos last night. The first thing that the album title made me think of is that... Does Paul have a closet crush on The Bangles? I do. But, when I thought that Paul may have, I knew that I didn't have a chance! lol
Walk Like An Egyptian ~ The Bangles
