We've talked about this previously but what I would love to see Paul do in the coming months as a new project (or when they can) is for Paul to gather his Band together for the purpose of playing a smaller scale "live" show. In my mind, the primary purpose of this Post Covid Event would be doing a "live presentation" of the McCartney III album. I'm talking here about a "special show" and not a typical "Tour" show where he combines songs from his entire career including Beatles, Wings, big 70's hits etc.
How neat would it be for the full Band to play the McCartney III songs "live" with Paul. The fact that it would be the full band alone would give the songs a different overall sound versus Paul's studio performance and subsequent album. I'm not saying they would have to do every song but at least the majority of the album tracks.
Initially, I can easily imagine the Band with Paul doing "Slidin" as one of the encore songs. How great would that be? As part of the Setlist, I would love to hear them doing the good guitar base songs like Seize the Day, Find My Way, Pretty Boys, Lavatory Lil and When Winter Comes. It could sound dramatically different but still very good at the same time. A song like "Women and Wives" could be done during a piano segment and I would love to hear the band doing a song like "Deep Down" with the Band using the added "horn" players.
While this show would focus on McCartney III songs, they could also play a few extra and recent songs from Egypt Station (not done on the previous tour) like "I Don't Know", "Happy With You", "Confidante", "Dominoes", "Do It Now", "Hunt You Down" and "Naked". The last 2 songs could be played as part of the encore along with "Slidin".
Some of the advantages with a show like this is that the songs are all recent songs. Paul knows them from a memory point of view and he also recorded them with his "latter"era voice. Even some of these songs were recorded with Paul's current Band members.
The biggest benefit however is that they could do a few of these shows and then release a " new" CD of the best performances from them. How refreshingly different and successful this kind of CD could be when you consider how great his recent albums and songs have been from the last 20 years or so.
Great idea BJ and you know I would be on board with it. Sadly, the McCartney team would not think to do something like this because it would not make millions of dollars. IMO this as an artist would be fun to do, new songs never performed live in an intimate setting. While I 100% agree with you a CD of this type of show would be refreshingly different, I really doubt how successful it would be. As we have seen over the last few album releases, there is a great first week or two at most and then the album goes away.
Hey Yankeefan and Nancy. Thanks for your imput.
I agree with you that this is a far fetched idea and like you, I doubt it could happen. On the other hand I think the time is right for Paul at this stage in his life.
The big question is whether Paul has the energy to do it on top of all the other projects he's constantly doing. I think his current Band loves the guy and they would do anything for him. And they are all young enough to do it. They are still at the top of their game (musically and vocally) so most important, they would be the necessary pieces to really help Paul pull it off.
It kind of reminds me of the time that Paul started working on Chaos and Creation and Nigel Godrich. NIgel forced Paul to get out of his comfort zone which is what Paul would have to do now. No Lady Madonna's, Let It Be's, Hey Jude's, Band on the Run, Live and Let Die etc. at this kind of show. None of these songs that Paul can do in his sleep. He has already done them time and time again. It would be all" new" songs that Paul has never performed "live" to an audience before. It woiuld mean some work and rehearsal time for all the guys. But as I said, the time is right. All the songs would be very recent songs which Paul already knows and songs that he recorded with his current older voice. Does Paul have the kind of energy at almost 79 to do this. I doubt it. He doesn't need to do anything like this at his age for sure.
I decided to put together an " imaginery" setlist just to see if Paul or anyone really close to him happens to see this post and put this crazy idea directly to Paul. Here goes:
*2021 Special Show (maybe in the Fall of this year or even the Spring of 2022 depending on how Covid 19 and the Vacination Roll Outs are doing). I could see this type of show being held at a smaller venue that holds maybe a couple thousand people.
Setlist
1. Long Tailed Winter Bird (opener and primarily instrumental)
2. Find My Way
3. Get Started (Bonus Song on Egypt Station)
4. Dominoes (Egypt Station)
5. Pretty Boys
6. Home Tonight (from Egypt Station sessions)
7. In a Hurry (from Egypt Station)
Acoustic Set
8. Happy With You (Egypt Station)
9. Confidante (Egypt Station)
10. Early Days (from the New Album)
11.. The Kiss of Venus
12. When Winter Comes
PIano Set
13. I Don't Know (Egypt Station)
14. Do It Now (Egypt Station)
15. Women and Wives
16. Deep Down (with Paul's extra horn players)
Encore Songs
17. Lavortory Lil
18. Slidin
19. Hunt You Down (Egypt Station)
20. Naked (Egypt Station)
21. Seize the Day (great final song)
* other possible songs at a 2nd or 3rd show...Alligator (from New), On My Way to Work (from New), Ever Present Past (from Memory Almost Full), Mr. Bellamy (from Memory Almost Full), You Tell Me (from Memory Almost Full), Friends to Go (from Chaos and Creation) or Too Much Rain (from Chaos and Creation).
Could Paul have the energy to do anything close to the shows I'm describing. I'm not sure and I wouldn't blame him to just enjoy his later years. His voice is about as rested as it can be at this time. And what a way for Paul and his "true" McCartney Post Beatles' fans to "celebrate" on the heels of Paul's 80th birthday.
We love you Paul!

I will just talk about the energy to do this show (including encore songs) and I think the answer is yes. Even with chatting a bit between songs, I don't think this show would last much more than 1 hr 15 minutes which is half the time of his normal shows. In addition, two of the songs you have listed are mostly instrumental (Deep Deep Feeling & Long Tailed Winter Bird) which saves his voice even more. Finally, a show like this in small venue would be a much more relaxed atmosphere which would help him IMO. There is no worrying about trying to please first timers since this is basically a "McCartney III" and "Egypt Station" show. So in the end (ha ha), I think he physically could do this type of show. Sadly, I think he would have no desire to do it - oh well.

Your idea sounds great BJ, If I had a ticket to that show I would be as excited and thrilled as I was seeing my first Paul concert. The whole New and fresh thing about it.
then there is reality... the concert for those who only know a handful of Beatle songs, and maybe top 10 solo. The Concert machine gets in motion, the big money, the big audience and playing the songs to keep the part time fan engaged to the show. (Which I do like, but something way different and new sounds like a great thing). At this stage of Paul's playing and doing shows, he probably wants to continue playing the songs he plays all the time and possibly putting one or two of them in there.
It would be cool if he did your idea BJ with a Paul McCartney special II - and a few additional fun things as part of a TV or movie type of thing.
it is what is ....if Paul announced a concert doing what he always does, I would want to go to it - if it came around to an area near me.
Thanks as always for your imput "Fool"

We love you Paul!
Some random thoughts about the type of show I'm proposing.
I have to say that the "Setlist" above (if I do say so myself) is a great, great setlist and it kind of reminds me of a show that Paul did way back in April of 1991. It was part of the popular MTV Unplugged Series back in the day. Paul and his current band at the time actually did the 2nd episode following Elton John who did the 1st episode.
I remember the show very well and bought the subsequent "Unplugged Paul McCartney album". I loved the show and album but I was surprised at the time of just how many "cover" songs that Paul did. They were great early rock and roll standards (e.g. Be Bop A Lula, Blue Moon of Kentucky, San Francisco Bay Blues, Hi Heel Sneakers, Ain't No Sunshine, Good Rockin Tonight, Singing the Blues etc.) that Paul and the Band performed. While I generally loved the performance, I kept thinking "how" could have left off so many of his "own" songs especially from his Solo career.
When I look at this "imaginery" setlist above, I was (as a big fan) even suprised of just how many "great songs" Paul has written even in the last few years and way past the MTV unplugges performance. This is why I believe it would be great for Paul and his current Band to do the kind of Setlist I'm proposing. No cover songs, no Beatle songs that he has done countless times before etc. How fresh this would be and, at the same time, illustrate just how good Paul's Solo career has been.
It got me to further think that if Paul considered a TV event or a small scale live show like this (live or prrerecorded) he would probably need a "MC" (master of ceremonies) type person. The first one that comes to mind is Jimmy Fallon. Jimmy loves Paul and he has plenty of experience as a MC or host. On top of that, he is very musical and would provide that all important comic relief.
The other thing that Paul would probably need is a "musical director" for the show. The first person that came to mind for me is Giles Martin. Again, I think Giles likes Paul a lot and he has that great heritage of being George Martin's son. I think he could do a great job putting the music together.
Finally as far as a "possible" special musical guest, I would pick Elvis Costello. Mr. Costello has worked with Paul and he can sing practically anylthing well. Maybe he and Paul could do a couple of acoustical numbers like they did in the Flowers in the Dirt era.
I still think as I have said that Paul need his current Band as an integral part of this proposed show. They love Paul and they play their individual intruments really well and they can help Paul vocally.
Any thought about this idea in general. Thanks

Thanks Yankeefan. I just added a couple of more ideas to this proposed (and imaginery) small scale show. Let me know what you think. I agree that it's a long shot at best. Like you (and going towards 79 in age), I don't think he would have the desire to do it. It would be a lot of work and he is always busy with other musical projects and writing new songs. But as long time Solo Paul fans, we can always dream.

BJ, the Unplugged shows were great years ago, I really loved them. While McCartney is great at 50's rock, I was a bit surprised he did that many covers for that show. Those shows worked because they were on MTV which at the time was just all about music. I would not be a fan out of making your proposed show into a TV event with MC like Fallon who IMO is too much of a fan boy. I am fine if you record it and have it shown as a concert on network like PBS or the British equivalent network. Special guest appearance by somebody like Elvis Costello would be cool but to do that I would think you would have to throw in one of the FITD songs they did together into your set list.
If I was nitpicking your set list, I would cut down the encore to just "Slidin" and "Seize The Day". I think encores should be short and sweet not an extended part of the concert. Just my opinion but I think you should always end the main part of your show with something uptempo so I would suggest adding one more song after "Deep Deep Feeling". The song I would pick is my favorite song from "New" and that is "I Can Bet". So in summary, I have eliminated three songs from the encore but added one to the main part of the setlist. This is a shorter tighter show and easier for McCartney to handle vocally.
Finally, thinking about your proposal I was wondering what would be the incentive for McCartney doing something like this show. Obviously, it would not be a money maker and he still has to pay the band and "roadies". IMO, it all comes down to whether he would just enjoy doing a show like this as an artist and honestly I don't think he would. I think his love of touring is all about the money and they easy adoration he gets being "Beatle Paul". I may be wrong but it is just my "Deep Deep Feeling" - pun intended -lol

Thanks for your great imput Yankeefan and yes that MTV Unplugged Show was many years ago with a whole different Band. As I said, it was actually April of 1991.
Giving it more thought, I think Paul should just do a limited number of shows like this and not literally a TV Show. Maybe 3 or 4 locations; maybe London, New York, Los Angeles, Vancouver. Then rather doing a specific TV show, he could offer the "best performance of the bunch" to one of the major Networks and have them show the actual concert. Doing it like that, you wouldn't need a MC like Jimmy Fallon at all.
Figuring out the setlist would more or less be up to Paul and the Band except that everyone (Paul and the Band included) would know that the setlist would be made up entirely of Paul's recently written songs. Afterall, they would be the musicians performing. In general I love the idea of doing primarily newer Solo songs (McCartney III, Egypt Station and New) since Paul as the writer knows the songs and he wrote them using his "older" voice. My gut feel is that all of the Band members would also agree. In all honesty, they would probably love the idea since for many years they have had to perform many of the same songs over and over again. It would give them a challenge.
The other thing I would personally love in a true "freshened up" Setlist is for Paul and the Band to play all new songs that they have never perform before an audience before. That would really make these shows special..
I think there is one other aspect to these shows that I haven't mentioned before. Why can't Paul and Band perform these special concerts in "normal size" arenas that hold like 20,000 people. This would make these concerts more financially feasible for the companies that are doing the promotion and the Band Members. The main thing is to advertise in advance the overall scope of the show so that fans realize that the setlist is going to be entirely be made up of recent Solo songs and generally from the last 10 years. Let the people know that this isn't going to be like past shows or tours with many Beatle songs and big 70's hits in the setlist. By doing this, I still think that Paul will have close to all "sell outs". The other result may be that the audience in general would be more "true Paul fans" and not Beatle Paul fans. "Consumer Beware Publicity" will also ensure that fans will not be upset. Paul, Wix, Rusty Abe, and Brian are all professionals and they shouldn't be worried in the least about what the fans think about the songs they have chosen to play anyway. Just my opinion.
Finally, having a special guest for a couple of songs (e.g. Elvis Costello would be my first choice) would also be a Paul and Band decision. For Paul and Elvis Costello to play 2-3 acoustic songs from their Flowers in the Dirt days would just add to the overall excitement and variety of the show.
Thanks

Small venue shows in locations around the world would not be financially feasible IMO. Why pay expenses for his band and road crew to travel across the world for a few shows at each location. If he was going to do several shows like you mentioned, it would be better if he did it at several locations in the UK, for example "The Cavern Club" in Liverpool.
"I think there is one other aspect to these shows that I haven't mentioned before. Why can't Paul and Band perform these special concerts in "normal size" arenas that hold like 20,000 people. I think the answer to that question is that arena's would be half empty at best. People are not going to fill up 20,000 seat arena's without him doing the Beatle/Wings hits. The type of show you are wishing for is perfect for the small arena/club with intimate setting especially if you want to record it to show on TV.

If he ever had special guest that would be very cool, the other one I would like would be David Grohl of the "Foo Fighters". Those two seem to have a nice friendship and Grohl can play any instrument you like and has very good voice.

It would be so great to see a show focused on his newer solo material.
He could even just do a "From the Basement" type of show from his home studio and release it online. Why not?

Thanks as always for your imput Yankeefan. Yes, Yes...Dave Grohl would be my second "special guest" choice. Either Dave or Elvis. Both have excellent voices, have written and played with Paul and love the Guy.
PS I sent you a PM.

Sounds great to me, would love it !!

"From the Basement"
"From the Living Room"
"From the outdoors"
The idea sounds great.
I don't have to see guests ... unless it is Ringo...I like the idea of the current band, if it is possible And some combo of one or two of them accompanying on some songs and solo Paul if he so wants to.
New songs and reaching back a few albums .... possibly more?
"Stuck at home" ... just joking with this one.
these are not likely to happen, but fun to toss ideas around. -
Listened to the full McCartney III album this morning on Spotify. Had continuuous music until the last track (When Winter Comes) when 3 short commercials finally appeared. What a great and tight album! The individual tracks still flow so well.
I can visualize the concert I'm dreaming about (with Full Band) above and how great this kind of show would be. Throw in a few additional tracks that I listed from Egypt Station and New (the album) like Dominoes, Confidante,Happy With You and Early Days (during acoustic segment), I Don't Know and Do It Now (during the piano segment). I can also see Hunt You Down and Naked as part of the encore segment (along with Slidin and Lavatory Lil) and you would have a great, great concert filled with only Solo Paul songs. And "Seize the Day" would be a great and meaningful closing song.
Love this idea! Hope someone brings it up to Paul. How fresh it would be and prove to the world just how many wonderful and fantastic songs he has written in just over the last few years.
-
I am at the point now with "McCarney III" that I will start to only play it every month or two so I don't get sick of it. I have put three songs from the album on the "McCartney" playlist on my IPOD. I will not hear them that often since I have over 150 songs on that playlist and always use the "shuffle" feaure when putting it on.
-
Hey Yankeefan...had my cataract surgery (left eye only) on Tuesday. You were so right. It was no problem. And I Had the eyepatch removed this morning. It's so nice now to be able to put on my glasses.
I'm going to be listening less to McCartney 3 at this stage myself. One thing for sure, you won't have to worry about "radio" playing it too much. I've yet to hear one of McCaertney 3 songs played on any rof the egular FM radio statlions from Tampa or Orlando.
Since neither one of our cars have a CD player, I haven't been playing the McCartney 3 CD either. I've mainly been playing the playlists from Spotify when I go on my walks. Besides hearing "This is Paul McCartny" where they sprinkle in McCartney 3 tracks, I was just listening to Spotify where they're playing Paul's latest "Sticking Out of My Back Pocket" playlist that includes many old 50's rock standards from Run Devil Run, the Russian Album, the Amoeba CD etc. You are so right, Macca has always done the early rock songs very well.
Speaking of McCartney III, the best part of the album to me are the 4 songs in the middle...Deep Deep Feeling, Sliding, The Kiss of Venus and Seize the Day. Thise 4 songs in a row sound great together to my ears.

He could even just do a "From the Basement" type of show from his home studio and release it online. Why not?
Sounds great to me, would love it !!
Love this idea as well focusing on later material!! How about having his band on as guests and people associated with his latest projects too.

I agree 100% McCall and Love2Travel.
I can't get this idea of Paul performing most of the songs on McCartney III with his full Band out of my mind. That would be a CD I would love to buy and own. I love the studio version and DIY approach of the McCartney IIi album, but a "live" version with Paul and his full Band would give the album a potentially different and great enhanced sound also.
The songs I would love to hear "live" the most are:
Deep Down - while admittedly this track at almost 6 minutes can be a little "drawn out" and "long" on the studio album version but I can hear the potential of this song as a great great "soul live track" if Paul utilizes his "live horn players"and with Abe especially providing his vocals assists on the "Deep, Deep Down" vocal parts similar to the way the Band did on the live versions of the Venus and Mars track "Letting Go".
Find My Way - while I love this track on the studio album, I can hear the full Band doing an even better job. Again, with the live "horn players" they can "add" to the horn parts of the song.
The Kiss of Venus - sung during the acoustical part of the show, I can hear "Abe especially" adding to Paul's vocals on the repeating lyric lines like "in the early morning glow", "harmonic sound" "our secrets blown" and the "sweet sweet summer air" parts. I can hear the full Band enhancing this already great song.
Seize the Day - I would love to hear the full band treatment of "Seize the Day"as the closing song in the concert. Great lyrics to end the show.
Slidin - Similar to "Deep Down" I would love to hear the full Band "live" treatment of "Sliding" in the Encore segment of the show. I can hear Rusty's great electric guitar during the guitar solo in the middle.
Pretty Boys - Like other McCartney III songs, I would love to hear the Band's full treatment (especially the background singing and humming parts" to "Pretty Boys".
Paul doesn't have to do everything himself. He has a great backing Band that can enhance this great studio album by simply doing many of the songs "live".
The only McCartney III song I'm not sure Paul and the Band should do "live" is "Deep Deep Feeling"because of its considerable length.. But at the same time I would love to hear Wix play the great jazzy piano chords and Rusty playing the electric guitar parts live. Brian plays a very good bass guitar that could be utilized very well alsoduring the song as well as Abe's playing very good drum fills. Maybe just the way I felel when I hear this admittedly long track on CD, the song actually goes by pretty quickly with all the music and vocal changes. Maybe like the other tracks on McCartney III, it cold be very effective done "live".
Any comments on Paul and the Band playing McCartney III live. One of my big disappointments after Egypt Station was that Paul only played "4 song"s from Egypt Station on his subsequent tour. And of those 4 songs, 2 ot them (Fuh You and Come On to Me were propably the 2 worse songs on Egypt Station from a lyric point of view. I was so disappointed he didn't play "I Don't Know" , Happy With You, Confidante, Dominoes, Do It Now and the closing track songs.
The next step (when they can) is for the Band and Paul to Play McCartney III on tour or in a special show. And I'n not talking about 3 or 4 songs, I mean practically as Abe once said..."let's play the whole album".

"Hey Yankeefan...had my cataract surgery (left eye only) on Tuesday. You were so right. It was no problem. And I Had the eyepatch removed this morning. It's so nice now to be able to put on my glasses."
Glad it went well BJ !!

Thanks Yankeefan. Feeling good and today we're getting our 2nd Maderna vaccine shots at Publix. Glad it's Friday so my wife and I can just stay close to home over the weekend in case we have any side effects from the 2nd shot. I've seen Covid/Health articles saying that the 2nd shot especially can produce more negative side effects.
As far as Maccaboard is concerned, it seems like you and me (along with Love2travel, McCall, the Fool and maybe a couple others) have any interest in Paul's latest album McCartney III. I'm amazed since the album is only a little over 2 months old. Nobody in general on this Site seems to be interested in Paul doing a "live" concert mainly on playing McCartney III with his full band. Of course we will have to wait till the majority of people get their vaccine shots but we seem to be making great progress. I'm speaking more about the US since that is where I live. Maybe by the Summer or Fall of this year Paul and the band could begin looking at potential venues. I'm still more in favor of a smaller scale show /venue. I'm just hoping that Paul and the Band are thinking along this line. It would be a great show in my opinion and might creat more of a buzz over this album, I know at least you and I think it is pretty great in general.
I did my customary early morning routine of plugging my earphones into my laptop (on Spotify's buy/stream platform right on Maccaboard dated 12/18/20) Thankfully I can listen to the whole album free without any commercials at least on Spotify.
I have to say that "Seize the Day" and "The Kiss of Venus" would make my top 10 or 15 best Paul Solo song list at this point. They're the 2 best songs on McCartney III (only my opinion). Both songs have great chorus's/bridges with great lyrics and melodies in my opinion.
