Rusty

I never really thought about it...I have a pen that Rusty used. So, here's my story: After getting lost a few times on the way to Spaceland, my friend and I finally got there, and parked on the street almost right in front of the club at around 7:30 or 7:45. We walked down (probably about 20 yards or so) to a Thai restaurant for dinner, then came back after 8 to see what was going on...as we approached the club I could hear Devil's Spaceship being played, which made me panic, because it wasn't 9 yet! So we go in, and there's no one to take our money...we walk a little further in and Rusty and the band are on a tiny stage to our right, and there's a group of 4 guys sitting at a table and THAT'S ALL, other than the 1 or 2 guys at the mixing board. At the end of Devil's Spaceship (I think that's what it was), everyone clapped and Rusty thanked the group of guys and the "duet of ladies" (or something like that...I.E. US). Luckily we later learned that it was just soundcheck...and they kicked us out until they opened the doors around 9:10, by which time a good amount of people had gathered outside. My friend and I were standing right outside the door, and at one point Rusty stuck his head out, and I grinned at him, and he grinned at me, then went back into the club. Rusty didn't go on until 9:30, which was a bit annoying because parking on the street is only free until 11:00 p.m., and then if you don't have a permit you get a ticket for $35. It was a great show, and I think he did all of the songs from Undressing Underwater, plus another song that I didn't know. I agree with scottycatt in that "Hurt Myself" sounds different live, probably because Brian, Paul, Wix, and Abe weren't there. Unfortunately I don't think any of them showed up to support Rusty. I tried to get a few pictures, but I don't know if they'll come out, since I didn't want to bring attention to myself and use flash (although one or two others were taking flash pictures). The show ended around 10:30 or 10:40 or so. I felt bad because we only had about 20 or 30 minutes to hang around before leaving, and I think I kind of bothered Rusty to get an autograph. He was chatting near the back of the stage (which was near the front door), still somewhat dealing with his guitars and such, and I waited until someone else got an autograph, then I asked for one. Of course, he was nice and obliged, but I feel that my timing wasn't that great...but it was 10:58 or so and I didn't want to get a ticket. He asked me my name, and I told him "Sharon," and then I told him that I thought it was a great show, and he didn't answer me, but kept writing. (Maybe he just didn't hear me.) I added that I had last seen him in Liverpool, and he still didn't say anything, so I decided to stop speaking. He was signing my CD cover on the front desk (where you pay admission), and the cashier asked him to move around because a line had formed to get autographs, so he did. He finished signing and handed the pen and CD cover back to me, and I said "Thank you" and he went to sign someone else's CD. I looked down at the CD cover, and saw that he actually had heard what I had said. He wrote: Sharon, From Liverpool to Silverlake! Thanx, Rusty Anderson Then we left. I felt dumb, as I have always felt after I met Paul and Heather (separate occasions), thinking "why didn't I say that?" Oh well, it's over, and it was a great show, and I have Rusty's autograph! My friend that came with me enjoyed the show...she's not a huge Paul fan, but she is a Beatles fan, and she likes concerts in general. Oh, and by the way...Rusty really does have huge hands. I forgot to tell my friend during the show, but told her before he signed my CD, and she agreed with me. She agreed with me in that he does not look as old as he is. Anyway, that's about it for now. I imagine Corinne will be able to provide us with a set list. Corinne, I'm sad that you weren't able to be there...I almost asked Rusty if you were able to show up, but I knew you were going to be busy that day. Oh, if anyone noticed, I had a purse that said "Sgt. Pepper's Lonely Hearts Club Band" (well, technically it says "...Heart Club Band" due to a miscalculation of space) shaped like the drum from the Sgt. Pepper album. I also noticed someone wearing a TRAVIS shirt - was that anyone from the board? I almost said hi to the guy, because Travis is one of my favorite groups/musicians after Paul. (It's a toss up between Travis and Jason Mraz, who incidentally can look a lot like Paul, if anyone has ever seen pictures of him...Jason Mraz that is.) Sorry for the long post, but I imagine people enjoyed it...:-) Sharon

That "song you didn't know" - would that be Spanish Castle Magic? Because he did that at the other spaceland show, and at least one of Paul's soundchecks. Hendrix song, I think.

Could be, but I don't remember the lyrics containing Spanish Castle Magic...I was thinking while I was listening that it might be, because I know he played it before...but it didn't seem like it. Hopefully we'll find out from Corinne or someone else who was there.

-
Wow Sharon, thanks for the story! I'm glad that he did hear you while signing your cd cover

Rusty's planning some more solo dates outside of LA when he's back from Paul's tour, so hopefully he'll be playing near everyone. Don't forget he'll be at The Coach House on April 17 - that's only about an hour north of San Diego, about 75 min south of LA. Fun venue. I'll post the set list as soon as I have it, I've been swamped.

Well well... a solo album.. Sounds good! It pays to have connections I guess...hehehe...

OMG!! That was ME who was waiting behind you for the autograph at the front desk. I wish now that I had paid more attention to who was in front of me, but I was concentrating on catching Rusty's attention, as I was having him autograph a CD for a friend here on the board. I made a brief comment to Rusty about the person I was having the CD signed for, and he was very quiet and thoughtful for a moment, and then he wrote a very nice message. He even said, "I'm having a hard time thinking of things to say." Can you imagine how difficult it must be to have just finished a 45-60 minute set, get your equipment off stage, and then stand around and "meet and greet", all the while trying to think of clever and different things to say to people you've just met? I give credit to Rusty for being so gracious and accommodating. So many performers nowadays act as though they're doing the audience a favor just by being in the same room with them and allowing them to breathe the same air. . . I've lived in L.A. long enough to expect that, so I'm surprised when it DOESN'T happen!! :

Wow - scottycatt and YoungGerl - sounds like you both had a fantastic time. Thanks for sharing!!

Yeah, it WAS great. Maybe you'll get your chance when the band tours the UK this summer. Will you be going to any of the shows?
-
That's because he's a really nice guy and hasn't changed a bit from the time he had his very first band. He was thrilled last year in Liverpool when he got to meet everyone who was at the Jacaranda as well, that was so cool.

I found this lovely pic of Paul and the band:

Bah! I wish *I* had paid more attention to who was behind me, but I was in a hurry to get out so I didn't get a parking ticket! I should have just sprung for the $4 valet...almost the cheapest price I've seen for a valet in LA! (The cheapest was $3.50, I think, at Electric Lotus in Los Feliz, if that means anything to you any of you...scottycatt, that might mean something to you, since you live in the Hollywood Hills...) Scottycatt, are you going to any of the other shows? Are you going to the screening of Paul's new DVD at the Egyptian Theatre in Hollywood next weekend? I'm going to be there... Sharon
