PAUL SOLO/POST BEATLES' ANTHOLOGY
-
Looking at the 2001-2010 Tracklist on the bottom of Page 8 is what separates this "proposed" New Compilation By Decade from the "Pure McCartney" 2016 Compilation. Look at the B-Sides/Bonus Tracks like "Why So Blue, Summer of 59, This Loving Game, She is So Beautiful etc, etc. You didn't get the B-Sides, Bonus Cuts or Unreleased Gems on the "Pure McCartney" Compilation. Looking at these lists from Paul's 5 Post Beatles Decades, we need a Compilattion that's Complete and full of the Paul songs that even many fans don't know. These songs should be far more known... they are that good.

You know my favorite decade is the '90s, mainly for Flaming Pie songs!
P.S. Keep checking your PMs B J!

I have to say that I love my Revised 2 Disc Set ABOVE for the 90's (Paul McCartney Solo/Post Beatles Compilation By Each Decade). The last Paul Compilation In 2016 called "Pure McCartney" did have a few "Flaming Pie" tracks but strangely did not include Young Boy, Heaven On a Sunday and Somedays. All are included on my "Proposed" 90's Compilation 2 Disc Set. I also included other "extra" Flaming Pie Session tracks including:
Love Come Tumbling Down
Same Love
Broomstick
Love Mix/Waiting for the Sun to Shine
All of the above "extra" tracks are terrific. The 90's Decade also had a lot of great "live versions" from the Off the Ground Sessions. The tour was called"The New World Tour"so many of these performances would also be available on a New Paul Compilation. There was only one "Off the Ground" track included on "Pure McCartney. In many cases, the "live versions" are superior to the original album versions imo. Pure McCartney also didn't include any of the excellent "B-Sides" that were released on Off the Ground Singles.
The "Pure McCartney" compilation barely touched the surface for Paul's career in the 90's and did even less for Paul's very active Music Career in the 2000's. For all of these reasons, Paul and MPL really needs a Solo Career Spanning Updated Compilation (hopefully in 2022).
I've also inlcuded more Run Devil Run tracks on this Proposed 90's 2 Disc Set. As with the Off the Ground "live versions", the "live" Run Devil Run tracks are as good or even better than their counterpart studio versions. Paul and Band gave special performances for Run Devil Run at the famous "Cavern Club" in Liverpool and they performed at the special PETA SHOW in Los Angeles. Disc 2 Contains some of the best performances from Paul's Run Devil Run Band including the great David Gilmour.

Have always LOVED Broomstick.

It's crazy that Pure McCartney didn't include Somedays, it's an amazing song. And I agree with oobu24 that Broomstick is great too.

Thanks McCall. I agree with you 100% on "Somedays". As I mentioned "Pure Mccartney also didin't include "Young Boy or Heaven On A Sunday". On the other hand, "Pure McCartney" did include "Flaming Pie (the song) and "The Song We Were Singing". Both songs are fairly good album cuts but in my opinion, not "classics" like Somedays, Young Boy and Heaven on a Sunday. Paul himself said that "Heaven on a Sunday" was his favorite on FP. And I love the 4 extra songs above not on the original Flmaing Pie album (Broomstick, Love Mix, Same Love and Love Come Tumbling Down). These are exactly the kind of tracks many big Macca fans like us want on a truly "Complete" Paul McCartney Compilation By Decade. Pure McCartney didn't have those extra/bonus tracks like those 4 songs above.

This is a great line up BJ Really seem to like the same music as you do.
Just a note, Mistress and Maid is the title of a Vermeer painting. There are other songs with the same title as paintings and Maxwells Silver Hammer has a tie to James Clerk Maxwell. I can’t wait to get the PM lyrics book to see if he was inspired by some of these things.

The 80's (2nd Half)
Disc 2 (From Press to Play through Flowers in the Dirt)
Final (I added a 23rd song...Only Love Remains; see at the bottom)
1. Stranglehold - I always liked this Paul-Eric Stewart collaboration. Good opener to the Press to Play album
2. Good Times Coming / Feel the Sun - 2 songs mixed into 1. A "feel good" sunny type song that I also always liked.
3. Footprints - One of the real hidden gems on Press to Play imo. One of the album's best songs and great lyrics
4. Once upon a Long Ago - "Single"for the Compilation Album "All the Best" and Produced by Phil Ramone. It was released in Mid-Novermber of 1978 and had a good Christmas feel. Beautiful song.
5. Back on My Feet - B-Side to Once Upon a Long Ago. One of the early collaborations between Paul and Elvid Costello. Paul had most of the song done and Elvis added lyrics to the "single" version. Another hidden gem that I really like.
6. Move Over Busker - One of the best rockers/up-tempo songs on Press to Play
7. Tough on a Tightrope - One of the best extra songs on "Press To Play". Not on the original LP but added to the CD Edition. Always liked this one. Another Paul-Eric Stewart collaboration.
8. Yvonne's The One - Unreleased extra song ftom the Press to Play Sessions. One of Paul's best unreleased songs ever. People should know this song with a classic McCartney melody. Never understood why it was left off Press to Play.
9. Lindiana - Unreleased Song. Associated with the scrapped album "Return to Pepperland" around the 1986-1987 period where Paul was working with Producer Phil Ramone and for a little while with David Foster. Lindiana was one of those ballads with Paul working with David Foster. Nice song but never saw the light of day as did "Return to Pepperland." Many of the songs from this period later resurfaced on Flowers in the Dirt and later even on Flaming Pie.
10.My Brave Face - One of the best Paul-Elvis Costello collaborations. The opening track to Paul's new "Flowers in the Dirt" album
11. Flying to My Home - B-Side to the "My Brave Face" Single". Nice Paul up-tempo song.
12. Put It There - One of the best songs on Flowers in the Dirt and one of the best all time Paul Solo songs. Paul always played it "live"on his subsequent "Flowers" tour.
13. Distractions - Great hidden gem on the Flowers in the Dirt album.
14.. This One - Another of the great album cuts on "Flowers in the Dirt" and performed on the "Flowers" tour.
15.. Figure of 8 - A great rocker on the album "Flowers in the Dirt'. Paul opened his Flowers of the Dirt" tour with this track. I always liked the shorter studio version the best. The "Single" version is a bit too long for my taste.
16.. Loveliest Thing- Very good B-side to the "Figure of 8" Single.
17. The Lovers That Never Were- Paul and Elvis Costello Original Demo Collection. While this track later appeared on Paul's subsequent "Off the Ground" album in 1991, this acoustical version is still the best imo. Great vocals by Paul.
18. Tommy's Coming Home - Paul and Elvis Original Demo. Great Paul=Elvis cowritten track.
19. So Like Candy - Another great track from Paul's and Elvis's Original Demo's.
20. Twenty Fine Fingers - Love this Paul=Elvis Acoustical Demo.
21. You Want Her Too - Flowers in the Dirt album version. Like this version the best.
22. We Got Married - Great album version with David Foster producing. Auto-biographical iin nature about Paul and Linda' s marriage. Great lyrics and great guitar solo by David Gilmour
23. Only Love Remains - Great ballad from Press to Play album
Disc 1 (First Half of the 80's)
1. Squid - Unreleased from 1987
2. Coming Up - Single (Live version from Glasgow (Wings European tour)
3. Smmer's Day Song - from McCartney 2
4. One of These Days - from McCartney 2 (last track)
5. Tug of War/Take It Away - from Tug of War (1st 2 tracks; I love the way George Martin segways these opening tracks)
6. Somebody Who Cares - great deep track from Tug of War
7. The Pound is Sinking - great rocker from Tug of War
8. Wanderlust - from Tug of War (one of Paul's all time great Solo Songs)
9. Here Today - Live Version (Pick the best acoustical version from one of Paul's tours)
10. Rainclouds - B-Side to Ebony and Ivory Single
11. I'll Give You a Ring- great B-Side to Take It Away Single
12. Pipes of Peace - Opening track to Pipes of Peace and great production by George Martin)
13. Simple As That - unreleased and later appeared on the Anti-Heroin project (great unreleased Paul song)
14. The Other Me - from Pipes of Peace (great deep track)
15. Keep Under Cover - from Pipes of Peace (another very good deep track)
16. Through Our Love - Last track on Pipes of Peace (underrated and great ballad)
17. On the Wings jof a Nightingale - Unreleased and demo of the hit song Paul gave to the Everly Brothers)
18. No Values - from Broad Street Album (great rocker Paul and Band performed on the movie)
19. Not Such a Bad Boy - from Broad Street Album (Another good rocker performed in the movie)
20. No More Lonely Nights - from Braod Street (last big Billboard Paul Hit; great guitar solo from David Gilmour)
21. Waterfalls - from McCartney 2 (another great ballad from Paul)
Give a relook to my 80'selections; pretty good if I do say so myself; I would love to own 2 Discs like these.
Here's my 2 Disc List. While I love it overall, I would probably have to bring each Disc down to 19 or 20 songs so you would have to cut 3 or 4 tracks from each Disc. Any suggestions?

Great lists! My suggestions for songs to remove would be Move Over Busker, So Like Candy, and The Other Me. IMO these are all ok songs, but I don't think they need to be included in a compilation like this.
And my first choice to remove would be You Want Her Too. I can't stand Elvis Costello's vocal parts on this song.
-
BJ, I'm going to make your task of "removal" even harder here cos I think of Tug Of War and Take it Away as very separate songs. Not melded together.
And great songs, they are.
And did I not see Ballroom Dancing in your list? I love that song. A vocal high from Paul, in that. A definite inclusion, in my mix. I love it.
ps. I love the Paul and Elvis collaborations, but I reckon their best was Veronica. Great song. Sad film clip. Brilliant song on every level. More Elvis than Paul, but a wonderful song.
pps. I haven't made your task any easier, I know.
-
BJ...
OUT.... some of those McCartney-Costello songs that didn't make the album cut.
IN.... However Absurd... It's Not True.
-
McCall Thanks for your interesting suggestions.
As I look at both lists (and combined you would probably have to cut 3 or 4 songs) I would start with "No More Lonely NIghts". Not that it isn't a good song, but it is already on "Pure Mccartney"and it was a big hit that got plenty of radio and MTV airplay at the time. I would probably also cut "keep Under Cover" mainly because I always thought the lyrics were weak. And finally I would cut "Coming Up". Even though I prefer the "live version" (which is what I put in) it also got plenty of radio airplay at the time and Paul himself played it "live" plenty of times on his tours.
I always liked "The Other Me". I know that some critics would love to criticize the "dustbin lid" lyric but they fail to bring up the rest of the lyrics which I think are pretty good. To me it's about Paul being disappointed in himself and the way he handled a particularl situation with Linda. I also love Paulj's "soulful" vocals. The ending is not great imo but it is Ok.
As far as other potential tracks to cut, I agree with you that "You Want Her Too" with Elvis Costello would be one that I could easily cut. I liked the orchestral ending but the rest of the song is just Ok. I love the rest of the Paul-Elvis Demo's (extra Disc on the Flowers in the Dirt Archive/Remaster) especially "The Lovers That Never Were" which I think is far superior to the "Off the Ground" studio track that came out in the 90's. If I had to cut one of those Paul-Elvis Demo songs, it would probably be "Twenty Fine Fingers". It's kind of ordinary but I like it and it certainly qualifies as a "hidden" track not on the original "Flowers in the Dirt" album.
Anyway I like the 80's list (both discs) and this was supposed to be Paul's "down" peiod. I like the B-sides included and the Unreleased tracks especially "Yvonne's the One". How Paul never put that on "Press to Play" always baffled me.

Toris...Always love your suggestions and imput.
Let me start with "Ballroom Dancing" because I had it on my original list and it brings up a great memory for me. My Daughter was born in May of 1981 (one of the greatest days in my life). A year later is when Tug of War was available and I bought the vinyl. My Daughter was already walking and I remember her really liking "Ballroom Dancing" to the point that she was dancing around the house everytime I would play it. You have to remember that she had no idea who Paul McCartney was so she just innately loved the melody. It was the first time I saw her trying to dance and it was so great. For that reason alone I would love to include it on a new Paul Compilation because it was such a good "deep" track from the album. I also like the original "Tug of War" version a little better than the "Broad Street version.
As far as your Tug of War (the song) and "Take it Away" comment, I could go either way. I just always loved the way George Martin segue's the 2 songs together. I remember when they put "Tug of War" (the song) on Wingspan, I didn't seem to like it as much without hearing "Take It Away" coupled with it. On the other hand, I agree that both are great songs so it wouldn't matter to me. I could go either way as long as both songs are included in a "New Paul Compilation" for the 80's.
I agree with you on Veronica. Great song and even though it was a collaboration, I think Elvis was the primary writer although it does have a little of Paul's great "melodic" twist to it. Elvis was a great collaborator with Paul. I always loved "My Brave Face, The Lover s That Never Were, So Like Candy, Mistress and Maid" etc etc. These demo's make great additional tracks for a new Compilation from Paul. And the "Pure McCartney" Compilation from 2016 doesn't include any of them.

McCall...just want your opinion.
Recently when I have been visiting Youtube / Paul McCartney, I've been seeing the video of Paul's great "Wanderlust" song but with the "Broad Street" movie version. Instead of the whole Medley (Yesterday, Wanderlust and Here There and Everywhere) where Paul and Ringo do the medley, Youtube just plays "Wanderlust". Not that the original studio version of "Wanderlust" on Tug of War isn' t great, I actually like the "Broad Street" vocal a little better. Paul's lead vocal is slightly "softer" (not as harsh) and I absolutely love the "Here There & Everywhere" snippet in the end. It's just the very brief melody part. Even though this proposed New Paul Solo Compilation is definitely a Post Beatles' idea, I just love that little snippet of one of Macca's greatest melodies. It's is the kind of thing that imo would be great on an Up-to-Date Compilation. It's the kind of surprise that big McCartney fans would really appreciate and you wouln't be hearing the same studio version that is on "Pure McCartney". Just a thought and have you seen the Youtube video of the "Broad Street" version.

Thanks for pointing this one out. I had seen this before but I think only once a long time ago because I didn't really like the Broad Street movie. I mostly just listen to the Broad Street soundtrack for the songs that aren't on other albums (like No More Lonely Nights).
This is definitely a great version of Wanderlust. And I do like the Here There and Everywhere snippet at the end very much, it fits in well and would be good as a subtle Beatles reference that still leaves the focus on Paul's solo song.
I'm actually kind of surprised that I do like this little snippet because I generally don't like that kind of thing. For instance I wish that the album version of Picasso's Last Words didn't include the snippets of Jet and Mrs Vandebilt. I like all three songs individually, but I usually think including bits of other songs detracts from the main song.
But in this case with Wanderlust I actually think it works really well, and it would be a good idea to include this version in a compilation instead of the TOW version.

B J, please don't cut No More Lonely Nights!! Beautiful song - who cares if it was on Pure McCartney?!
