Wish I could say that the above Post (it's actually 56 tracks rather than the 53 tracks listed) is a done deal for Paul's 80th birthday next year. It is a "Proposal" I'm submiting. As some of you know, I've been pushing an UPDATED COMPILATION BY DECADE for a few months but I've been convinced by a couple of boardies here (Yankeefan and Nancy) that the massive package I had in mind (like 10 CDs and at least 100 tracks ) is not "Realistic" for Paul and his company to do.
Wih this in mind, my new proposal is for a more realistic "mini package" of 3 CD's and around 50-55 tracks. I could see this package selling at a large retailer like Target at about $50. The theme of this Compilation would be Sir Paul classics from his Post Beatles' Career starting in 1970 with the McCartny Album through his latest McCartney 3. The criteria for the tracklisting would be real good Paul written songs (or co-writes) with good lyrics/good distinctive melodies. Sorry that is why you don't see songs like BipBop on this List.
I have also excluded most of the big hits that were played to death when they were rleased, that everyone knows and that have already been on previous Compilation packages. I'm trying to eliminate a package that has all kinds of duplications. Even on a few of Paul's signiture classics (i.e. Maybe I'm Amazed, Band on the Run) I'm proposing excellent "Live" versions. These are the kinds of unique "live" versions you don't hear on "Classic Rock" radio statons all the time.
Finally, I'm sure everyone can quibble with a few of the selections but look at the list as a whole. While 50-55 tracks can't possible include all the outstanding songs that Paul has written my follow-up package to these 3 CDs would be 2nd package (maybe around the Christmas selling season in 2022 or even 2023 with a Compilation called:
Cold Cuts and Rarities
This package would focus on good songs that are more rare and harder to find. I'm thinking about "unreleased songs, B-Sides, good demos, Paul songs that have been put on various Soundtracks and finally good "extra tracks" that didn't make it on their respective original Paul albums
Let me know what you think about this first mini package I'm proposing and then the follow-up Cold Cuts and Rarities idea.
Thanks
-
Sorry, but I think it would be esier to locate some bootlegs rather than have Paul & Co make a cd that you want.
It's been done as bootlegs over & over again. Here's one called "Cold Cuts".

BJ, I love the idea of celebrating Paul McCartney's 80th birthday with a compilation celebrating his long solo career that gets overlooked IMO. It would be like tying the knot of a bow around a present. This being said, I am a realist. The McCartney team released "Pure McCartney" in 2016 which is only five years ago and they think they did a great job with song selection -lol. Yes, McCartney has released a couple more albums since that compliation but will the team think it is enough new material to justify another complitation (the answer is no IMO). I believe the focus of the McCartney team and Paul himself is on album re-issues and there are plenty more of those left to do. I am not in the music business but I am going to assume doing re-issues with their fancy packaging are money makers and we know that is what the team cares about the most.
I only glanced at your list of songs quickly and I am sure I would love your selections, you have excellent taste. Like you said, we could all add or delete a few songs to make the listing more pleasing to ourselves. I will stilll stand by my statement made several times earlier and that is this type of thing or your original idea will not happen while Paul McCartney is alive. Hopefully many years from now, the estate will think about putting something like you have proposed together as a wonderful tribute to Paul McCartney, a music icon who was more than just a Beatle.
-
Personally I don't bother with compilation albums anymore than I do with live albums. I think it would be a great idea though if a new album was released next summer to celebrate Paul's 80th but I'd rather that release was an album of new songs rather than old songs. Sticking out previously released material in endless permutations is of zero interest to me.

Totally agree!

Only one response so far (from Kestrel) is valid in my opinion. If you are not an "old school" album or CD purvhaser at all, then you would have "NO INTEREST" in any Compilation Package of older material from Paul's complete Post Beatles' Discography. There are people (probably more of the younger demographic) that prefer to make up their own Playlists and probably wouldn't bei a potential buyer of a Compilation Package no matter how good the selection is. I get that!
I'm talking more about an "old school" consumer (probably more the older demographic in their 50s, 60s 70s and oler) who would buy a CD Compilation Package IF IT HAD THE "RIGHT" TRACKLIST. LOOKING SPECIFICALLY AT THE TRACKLIST (56 TRACKS/3 CDS)...I WOULD DEFINITELY BE A BUYER ESPECIALLY IF IT WAS A GREAT VALUE/PRICE LIKE $49.95. JUST FOR THE CONVENIENCE FACTOR ALONE, I WOULD DEFINITELY "BUY" THE KIND OF PACKAGE I'M PROPOSING. I'm just saying that I believe there are a lot of people (and in those in that demographic) that potentially would buy.
What was wrong about Pure McCartney (the June 2016 Compilation) was that even the 4 CD Package of 67 tracks was totally dominated by "top McCartney Hits" and his earlier albums from the 70's...McCartney, Ram, BOTR, Venus and Mars Wings at the Speed of Sound, London Town etc etc. So many of these same tracks were on Pure McCartney as well as earlier Compilations like Wingspan, All the Best etc. That is why it didn't sell well imo.
Of the 56 tracks in my Proposal, only 7 of them are "exact duplications" of what is inclded in the 4 CD Package of "Pure McCartney. There are 9 other tracks that have the same titles when you compare the 2 Compilations but I'm suggesting "Live Versions" that are as good or better than the original studio versions that are on "Pure McCartney".
Bottom line...there are a whopping 40 COMPLETELY DIFFERENT SONGS/TRACKS ON MY PROPOSED TRACKLIST. LET ME REPEAT THAT AGAIN...OF THE 56 TRACKS, 40 OF THEM ARE COMPLETELY DIFFERENT THAN WHAT IS ON "PURE MCCARRNEY.
Thanks for all the responses.

Where is that emoji for "beating a dead horse?"
-
BJ, years ago I came to the conclusion that I needed to "Let It Go" about the McCartney setlist. No matter how much I complained or wished for more solo songs, it just was not going to happen. I think the time has come my friend for you to "Let It Go" (lol) about complilation. I will end this with two final thoughts on the subject.
-
Sadly IMO, Paul McCartney, his family and management team does not appear to love his solo music like his Beatle classics. While I give Paul huge credit for loving to be creative even at his late stage of life, I feel these songs are basically vehicles for him to use on current tour. Once these new songs are done on tour once, for the most part they are discarded and never heard from again. The type of compliation you have proposed a couple of different ways deserves to be done by somebody who truly loves these solo songs and wants the world to know about them. I have kidded you a couple of times and said I nominate you to do this compliation because you love his solo career more than anybody I have encountered. Like I said earlier, if it ever was to happen it willl not be in our lifetime.
-
Paul McCartney is worth around 1 billion dollars so you would hope that everything he does artistically does not have to be about making a huge profit. McCartney's fan base is old and dwindling every day -lol. It is that fact that I think this type of project if done should be limited release like his "Russia" album years ago. Sell the complitation on this web site only and to existing members. If there is demand for more, than take it from there. There is plenty of music to select from and you just need somebody that cares about his solo legacy to make some good choices (B-Sides, Live versions, unreleased songs etc). The artwork does not have to be fancy and there are thousands of pictures I am sure he has that could be used without doing another photo shoot. My suggestion for the inside cover would be pictures of Paul with people like Elvis Costello, Stevie Wonder, George Martin and his two touring bands. The title of this compilation would be simply "Macca". I would do take off of "McCartney III" and have the cover be "Scrabble" letters spelling out M-A-C-C-A. I wonder how many points that would be in Scrabble game -lol.
That about does it for me. Once again, great idea but can't see it happening. If McCartney team ever changes their mind and wants to use my ideas feel free to do it !!

This would be a great compilation, I'd buy it even though I already have all of these songs individually. I think it would be helpful in getting some much deserved attention on Paul's solo career.
I think Yankeefan2 is right though that we won't see something like this for a long time, which is a shame.
-
Well... if this is to celebrate Paul's 80th.... it must also include his Beatles work.... probably contractually too messy, which is a shame. Ideally, I'd love an album that included both... his entire career.
BJ, I know you love Paul's solo career, but if 15 of his Beatles songs were given the green light...which would you choose on the album?
-
Thanks for your response McCall. I'm appreciative that you actually read my proposed Tracklisting.
Like me, I think the 2nd Mini CD Package that I think Paul needs to release (I wouldcall it "Cold Cuts and Rarities") would have a tracklisting where at least 50% of the tracks would be ones that you don't have individually. I'm talking about Unreleased, B-Sides, many of his best demo's, rare songs put on various Soundtracks, and extra tracks that didn't make it on Paul's original albums. Now that is a Set I would buy in a heartbeat.
Thanks again.

That's easy for me. Off the top of my head...Here There and Everywhere, All My Loving, I Saw Her Standing There, Can't Buy Me Love, And I Love Her, Yesterday (I love a couple of the early "Live" versions of Yesterday), For No One, Eleanor Rigby, Got to Get You into My Live, I've Just Seen a Face, Michelle, Hey Jude, Penny Lane, The Long and Winding Road, and Two of Us.
All of the Beatle Paul songs i listed above are universally known. The reason I love Paul's Post Beatles' career so much is that so many of the songs are actually underrated, relatively unknown, and many of his Solo songs are Beatle worthy in my opinion. Thanks as always for your imput.

Hey Guys and Ladies...Sorry for beating a dead horse. My wife and I are now only 1 week away from heading up North (New Jersey, Philadelphia, and New England). I guess I have a heavy case of "Cabin Fever" which is driving me a little crazy. It's been well over a year since I've seen my Daughter and Grandson, many of my 1st cousins and their kids, many of my "work" friends ( I retired from NJ in 2013) etc etc. Can't wait to see them plus once we get into September and October you normally get great weather with a lot less heat and humidity that we've been dealing with in Florida.
In reality I'm not a very creative person (not a do-it-yourselver for home projects, not a gardener or a painter etc. Thank God for Netflix, Hulu, Prime etc. so at least I have kept up with many of the more recent movies and TV Series. Besides this, one of my only hobbies is music and specifically Paul McCartney. LIke Kestrel said, I do hope that next year around Paul's 80th Birthday he does have new music to release. That would be my first choice but I don't think it is very realistic given that McCartney 3 is still relatively recent.
What is more realistic in my opinion is a much needed and updated new Solo Compilation with many new tracks that haven't appeared in his 4 previous Compilations. Pure McCartney from June of 2016 will already be 6 years old next June and believe it or not, many of Paul's albums are not included on any "Pure McCartney " tracks at all. For example Egypt Station, McCartney 3 and Flowers in the Dirt have zero representation on Pure McCartney. Several of his very fruitful past album recording sessions also have very limited representation. For example. albums and their respective recording sessons like Driving Rain. Off the Ground etc are only represented with 1 or 2 tracks even in the 4CD Pure McCartney Package. That is why I think an "Updated and Fresh" Compilation that is reasonable in cost is definitely needed over the next two years. Sorry for beating a deadhorse and being overbeating on the subject but it's a passion I have.

The problem with your proposal is the McCartney management team and Paul McCartney. When "Pure McCartney" came out, they were the ones who patted themselves on the back and thought they made great selections. Unless they suddenly have a "come to Jesus moment" and think and updated complilation is a money maker it is not going to happen especially by 2022. There are plenty of others things on McCartney's plate like "It's A Wonderful Life" and album re-issues to be given the deluxe treatment. I wish Paul McCartney and his mangement team had your passion about his solo work and wanted to get more people exposed to his music but they don't. We all could go one for weeks with music we would like on this type of compliation but in the end it is just an exercise in futility IMO.

Great points Yankeefan. Can't wait until we head up North. In the last week of September and through most of October, we will be in Massachusetts and take side trips to areas of Maine and New Hampshire. Hopefully we'll get great cooler weather and I'll get my head together and more relaxed. Of course, with this trip we'll see new things. And yes, travelling is another one of my hobbies and passions. Hope you have a good trip and are feeling better.

At the very least, this is something that definitely should be sold at Paul's concerts. That would be a great way to introduce more of his solo music to his audience even if he won't be playing the songs live.

New CD Album Proposal that I'm calling "Leftovers and Rarities". Right now it consists of 61 Tracks filled with Unreleased tracks, B-Sides, Rarities and Paul written songs not on original Paul Solo Albums. It would probably be a 3 CD Set.
This is a compilation that even big time Paul fans probably wouldn't have many of these tracks in their collectlion. For modest Paul solo Fans, many of the tracks would be like "New Songs" to them.
