"Out There" 2013 Setlist Critique and Suggestions

I am happy that Paul has made so many changes and has added Beatles songs that I do want to hear (Lovely Rita! Your Mother Should Know! That one is the biggest surprise to me!). But there are other songs I feel he could have added that would fit into the formula of keeping things familiar, yet still make fans of his solo career happy---like, what about Helen Wheels? It's from Band on The Run so people would know it, but he's NEVER done it, why can't he toss that one into the set? I'm not selling my tickets and I'm not going to leave early, but it's ok if that's what others want to do, I can't criticize someone for having an opinion just because it is different from mine...."and what's wrong with that?"
thank you

The only solution to make happy both type of fans is make sometimes some special gigs for hardcore fans with rare songs- b-side etc Here my dream setlist : 1.The world tonight 2.Another girl 3.What your doing 4.Take it away 5.Man we was lonely 6.Tug of war 7.Back seat of my car 8.Warm and beautiful 9.Only love remains 10.At the mercy 11.Heart of the country 12.Junk 13.Rocky Raccoon 14.I am carrying 15.Teddy boy 16.In my life (Lennon tribute) 17.Here comes the sun (Harrison tribute) 18.Cafè on the left bank 19.Press 20.Honey pie 21.Young boy 22.Mr.Bellamy 23.I wanna hold your hand 24.Maxwell silver hammer 25.Pipes of peace 26.To you 27.Wait 28.Baby's in black 29.Promise to your girl 30.Once upon a long ago Encore one 31.She loves you 32.From me toyou 33.A taste of honey Encore two 34.Why dont we do it in the road 35.Sally G 36.Beautiful night
this dream setlist is nearly the opposite of Pauls standart setist scheme. Here is 2/3 solo/wings and 1/3 beatles. Nice idea but unfortunately extremly unrealistic, except a special little tour, like the surpirse gigs 1991 w'll happens. I doubt it. Optimistically a 50:50 mix (already described above) is be the maximum we could get, if Paul remembers his later jewels songs . For me as a friend of statistics would be interessting to see the result of offcial survey about setlist balance on pauls page. Do u remember the surveys before the last concert in moscow 2011 and kiev 2008? As I recall there were a lots of wings songs among the top 10. We got Mrs. Vandebilt (Kiev) and maybe hope of deliverance (moscow) by this...

I've sold on my ticket to Vienna. No point going to a gig that I'd DEFINITELY walk out of at the half way point after the bulk of 'surprises' and when things get Beatlesy and boring.
I think you're just trying to get a rise outta people~
-
I think his brand new setlist is a great step in the right direction..if he changes the same amount of songs for each mini tour, it would be excellent and no one would know what to expect..

Helen Wheels would be great!! But that's not a recent tune so it really wouldn't satisfy those fans here who want Paul to do recent songs from Chaos and Creation or Electric Arguments. The thing is: The sales of Paul's recent albums are modest. He knows that when he plays Fine Line or Dance Till We're High, he's only going to get a flicker of recognition from a tenth of the audience (if that). I do think he'd get a good response if he did This Never Happened Before, given that a lot of people know that song from the Sandra Bullock movie. But he probably doesn't want to sing songs that remind him of the ex. It's strange to expect that at a big stadium concert, Paul would have a set list designed to appeal to 10 or 20 percent of the audience (who prefer solo Paul), rather than a set list designed to appeal to 80 or 90 percent of the audience (who prefer Wings/Beatles). So I guess people who want solo Paul shouldn't bother to buy a ticket until he announces a Paul Sings His Recent Songs Only Tour -- by which time hell will have probably frozen over. (Seriously, that would be a great tour.)

really? that's just silly! your going to miss the changes? your going to miss Paul? a new tour .....how sad...your choice & you might regret it

When I saw James Brown in concert in '98, would I have been disappointed if he hadn't performed "Sex Machine"? Possibly, but perhaps not -- since he'd included so many of his other huge hits in his show. I bought his 2001 DVD, Live At The House Of Blues, and the highlight for me was his new track -- "Funk On Ah Roll." And the audience loved it, too. Loved it. When I saw Tina Turner in 2000, I expected her to do her signature staples: "The Best," "What's Love Got To Do With It" and "Proud Mary" (two of which I really don't care for). Again, the highlights for me were her newer songs, and since she'd opened the show with the Ike & Tina classic -- their cover of Sly & The Family Stone's "I Want To Take You Higher -- the arena was already pumpin'. She closed the show with a brand-new song "24/7," and it was rousing. Why in the heck can't Paul do that? Not even the great Prince rests on his laurels, performing tons of new songs mixed with neglected classics -- and he still sells out arenas.

At least someone got some tickets cheap, so hopefully they will enjoy it. But me, I'll be happy just watching them on YouTube. No point me wasting more money flying there, getting accommodation etc etc etc just for a few songs. I regretted buying them when I saw the Brazilian interview where he said a lot of it was the same 'because it had to be'. Then the opening night just tipped me over the edge so I got them stuck on eBay!

Just a quick question. If you are at a concert and you don't recognize a song, can't you still enjoy the song if it is good and give it good applause. I truly understand a Beatle/Wings heavy setist from McCartney if he is playing a city/country he has never performed before or maybe not in 20 years. I do think that a place like NYC where he has consistenly played there the last 10-12 years, he should mix it up even more than he has at this point. As for "Helen Wheels", I would love it because I like the song and it rocks. Personally, I would love to see McCartney and "his band" do a concert of just solo stuff in a small club and film it for a DVD release for people like myself. Yes, I know - in my dreams - lol.

Oh I absolutely want to hear all of those newer songs, too, believe me! I still want Paul to do a Fireman tour. But I agree with you about his modest sales for recent albums and that most people won't recognize the songs. "Flaming Pie" was a big "huh?" for most audiences, I think. I just figure since he doesn't seem to want to play anything recent on this tour, he might as well play something older that's never been done before. Of all the changes to this setlist, the only songs he's doing right now that I personally have never seen before are the new Beatles songs. And those are great, looking forward to them! But my head exploded back during the tour when he added "1985," so I guess I just want another surprise like that one.

I remember Wings closing with "Soily". Nobody had heard of it but still went crazy at the end. McCartney opened with "Figure of Eight" in 1989/90 which was brand new and the crowd was into it.

Sure I would still enjoy the new songs and applaud them. Other people would start playing with their camera phones, getting up to go to the bathroom, heading over to the concession stands for a beer, chatting with their seatmate, etc. Paul, as the one guy on that stage who sets the entire momentum for the show, is under a lot of pressure to keep that momentum going. Brazil is a Beatles-crazed country. I think we need to wait and see what adjustments Paul makes to the set list once the tour gets to the US and Canada where there are more Wings fans and solo fans. I think there will be some more surprises. Whether they will be enough to satisfy the diehard fans posting here ... probably not.

One sweet dream. Maybe it'll come true with the new album.

I'm indifferent on this issue. Brass instruments are nice, but I've grown fond of Wix, so I guess horns aren't so essential to me.

My wife and I love horn sections, my wife was a huge fan of "Chicago" many years ago. My daughters also played sax, clarinet and trumpet when they were in HS so I appeciate it even more. Listen to the old clips of Wings doing it with horn section and I think it really does make a difference. Just my humble opinion - lol
