"Out There" 2013 Setlist Critique and Suggestions
-
Reading all this just makes me so sad. I miss John. How lucky we were to have had him for his short time here.
-
So it appears that last night in Austin, Paul switched the order of two songs - he took Lovely Rita out of the first encore and put it into the main set, and put Hi Hi Hi into the encore in its place. I think this is a good switch. Lovely Rita is a great song, but after seeing it in Orlando, it did cause the energy level to dip a little bit, especially coming after Day Tripper which is a higher-energy song. Now with Hi Hi Hi in there, he's got 3 high-energy rockers in the first encore and I think that is going to help the flow.

Indeed.

A perfect Lennon track for this Macca band could be "Hey Bulldog" but also "Revolution". Heavy sound !!
-
agreed.

Here is what I think McCartney should do: Get rid of ALL Beatle songs composed by McCartney. Perform only Beatle songs composed by Lennon and Harrison. The rest of the set list should be Wings and solo McCartney songs. Here's how it would look: 1. Please Please Me 2. Junior's Farm 3. You Can't Do That 4. Listen To What The Man Said 5. Let Me Roll It/Foxy Lady 6. If I Needed Someone 7. My Valentine 8. Nineteen Hundred And Eighty-Five 9. I Need You 10. Maybe I'm Amazed 11. A Hard Day's Night 12. Help! 13. Another Day 14. I Should Have Known Better 15. Long Long Long 16. Here Today 17. Lucy In The Sky With Diamonds 18. Something 19. Hey Bulldog 20. Good Morning 21. Mrs. Vandebilt 22. She Said She Said 23. Being For The Benefit Of Mr. Kite! 24. Julia 25. While My Guitar Gently Weeps 26. Band On The Run 27. Yer Blues 28. Dear Prudence 29. Live And Let Die 30. I Am The Walrus Encore One 31. Day Tripper 32. Hi Hi Hi 33. Dig A Pony Encore Two 34. If I Fell 35. Revolution 36. Come Together

Actually love this idea (and your setlist)! Am a little uncertain as to how well some of them would suit Paul's voice though.... Hmmm. Yer Blues, however, would be a bona fide *killer*! Oh baby - I'd pay big(ger) bucks for that alone.

It's 2013, and he had 'Hi Hi Hi' in the encore! _O_

I actually love that idea too!

Since Paul is going to promote his Beatle past, which is fine by me, why not go all the way and play all the hits he had a hand in: I SAW HER STANDING THERE SHE LOVES YOU I WANT TO HOLD YOUR HAND FROM ME TO YOU CAN'T BUY ME LOVE SHE'S A WOMAN I'M DOWN THINGS WE SAID TODAY YESTERDAY WE CAN WORK IT OUT PAPERBACK WRITER I'VE JUST SEEN A FACE I'M LOOKING THROUGH YOU GOOD DAY SUNSHINE HERE THERE AND EVERYWHERE ELEANOR RIGBY GOT TO GET YOU INTO MY LIFE PENNY LANE SGT. PEPPER'S WITH A LITTLE HELP FROM MY FRIENDS GETTING BETTER SHE'S LEAVING HOME LOVELY RITA MAGICAL MYSTERY TOUR FOOL ON THE HILL YELLOW SUBMARINE LADY MADONNA BACK IN THE USSR I WILL HELTER SKELTER HEY JUDE LET IT BE TWO OF US GET BACK I'VE GOT A FEELING THE LONG AND WINDING ROAD OH DARLING YOU NEVER GIVE ME YOUR MONEY GOLDEN SLUMBERS...THE END Obviously he can't play all these in one concert, but he could rotate them on a regular basis. Why play ALL TOGETHER NOW but not YELLOW SUBMARINE? Why play YOUR MOTHER SHOULD KNOW when he could play FOOL ON THE HILL?

Despite Paul's recent trend of performing a couple songs where he was not the lead vocalist, I think the main focus still is - and should continue to be - the songs he was the primary vocalist. So, All Together Now over Yellow Submarine makes sense. And besides, since 1989, Ringo has sustained a live career, almost exclusively based around the fact he's going to sing Yellow Submarine and With A Little Help From My Friends.... . Wouldn't want Paul to cut into Ringo's business! And Your Mother Should Know is appreciated, if only since its a tour debut, whereas Fool On The Hill was done on a few tours already.

How do you justify MR. KITE over, say, WHEN I'M 64 or OH DARLING? Truth is, it's hard to.

Performing Mr. Kite is arguably the most off the wall decision of Paul's live career EVER. I don't think it's fair game in comparisons.

Maybe that's just the reason, it's totally unexpected. There is probably some memory of making that song with John that made him want to do it. But I don't care what reason, I love that it's in the show.!

yep...only 2 songs from the last 37 years. Shame really. He has so much to choose from. But he is most confident in his Beatles work. So I guess there are many songs that we will never hear live.
-
I'm sorry but 2 songs in 37 years is ridiculous, that's almost twice my age! Having said that I know why he does setlists like this but is it any wonder his post-Beatles career is ridiculed like this by so many when even he acts like it doesn't exist after Gerald Ford became president?!
-
To be fair.... I only count 'Golden Slumbers/Carry That Weight/The End' to be one song, not three separate songs.
-
Yeah I would agree with that, I listed them as three songs however as thats how there listed on Abbey Road and a lot of people view them as seperate songs. Even counting them together that's still 2/3 of the show being entirely compromised of Beatles songs!

Thought folks here would appreciate this experience I had today: I was out shopping and came upon a nifty Beatles shirt that I wanted to try on. So this salesgirl -- who looked about 22 or so, took me to a fitting room, looked at the shirt, and said, "I have that shirt, I'm a huge Beatles fan. I'm going to see Paul McCartney for the first time in July." So we chatted a bit about how great Paul's shows are. And she, very cutely, fretted about what she should wear to the show. Then she said, "i suppose he'll play mostly Beatles songs, right? And maybe some songs by that other band he was in. What was that other band named?" It was hard to be irritated because she was SO excited. But still.
