"Out There" 2013 Setlist Critique and Suggestions

Not me! Jet has been performed almost since the 70s, keep Junior's Farm it's still fresh in the set and it rocks harder! I like Letting Go, but if you're going to replace Paperback Writer, you have to replace it with a song that rocks like it does. Same with Day Tripper, Please Please Me isn't an equal trade off. Birthday would be a good replacement.
Actually, I would love to see "Beware My Love" as a replacement to anything - lol.

Here's my thoughts on the setlist after having seen the show...it's probably the happiest setlist yet. All the songs are very BRIGHT! I loved it and appreciate how deep and diverse it really is, but I think a little more contrast would be appreciated by the bigger fans. Eight Days a Week was a really cool opener and it was a very interesting choice...certainly a curveball on opening night. But, I can still think of a lot of songs that deserve the spot more. I'm also ready for Junior's Farm to leave...not hearing Jet really was a bit of a downer. Listen To What The Man Said was an excellent addition, hopefully that sticks around for years to come! I'm done with Paperback Writer...I've heard it at every show and yeah, I don't HAVE to see him every year, but I don't understand why it is such a mainstay. He should probably drop My Valentine after this tour too, it's gonna lose what little touch it has. We Can Work it Out and Another Day were both EXCELLENT additions to the first acoustic set. Your Mother Should Know was delightful as well, I'd really like to hear that again...same goes for Lovely Rita. However Mrs. Vandebilt and Eleanor Rigby are over-staying their welcome with me...All Together and Now and Being For The Benefit of Mr. Kite were A LOT of fun. I have a lot more respect for Paul and especially Wix for tackling "Mr. Kite". Back in the USSR can go...along with Day Tripper and Helter Skelter...they kind of slow things down for "repeat offenders" And Hi, Hi, Hi was AWESOME!!! That should stay in the encore a few years. Just my thoughts....

Kind of agree with you Wixrocks, Paperback Writer and Helter Skelter have def outstayed their welcome! Felt all the new additions were excellent esp Another Day, Lovely Rita and We can work it out. If Paul tours with the new album hope he looks to drop the older tunes that have been there since the year dot!

That's my thought. If these rumored Japanese dates come through in November, I'd like to think the album would be out before them and he could debut about five new tracks (kicking out some OLD ones!)

I also find it interesting to note what OTHER people want to have added to the setlist, so when I meet people I usually try to ask them about it somehow or after the show, what songs were their favorites. My grandmother has been to every show I have except for Fedex Field and Scottrade Center. Her favorite songs were Eight Days a Week, Let Me Roll It, 1985, Your Mother Should Know, Mrs. Vandebilt, Something, and the abbey road medley. A decent mix of new songs and mainstays (with a heavy dosage of BOTR tracks!) She really wants to hear SILLY LOVE SONGS! Some friends from high school went for their first (hopefully not last!) macca concert and their favorites were 1985, Blackbird, Lovely Rita, Ob La Di Ob La Da, and Hi Hi Hi. So Paul is DEFINITELY doing right by the new Wings songs if first time fans are digging them. Lastly, I met a young couple on the metro back. They came in from New Jersey and this was the 4th macca concert since the 80's. They've seen him in every decade...the songs they mentioned were 1985, Lovely Rita, and Hi Hi Hi. We also talked about the LACK of songs from the 80's...specifically No More Lonely Nights and Take it Away.
-
Take It Away is a personal favorite and I'd LOVE to hear that live, but I don't think he's ever done it before...no time like now to start, Paul?

I've not read the entire thread, but I have thoughts both on why his setlist has the breakdown it does and also thoughts on the setlist itself. Regarding the breakdown, he plays the Beatles-heavy setlist because that's what the fans, myself included, want. A lot of people here want more solo material, but lets be honest: we're the diehard fans. We listen to the albums in their entirety and we listen to all of them. We like the deep cuts as much as, if not more so, than the greatest hits. Me? I've not heard a good chunk of his solo material, but other than Coming Up, Flaming Pie, The Song We Were Singing, and That Was Me, the Flowers in the Dirt material (and only some of it at that) is really about it for what I like. I like the Beatles and Wings material much, much more. However, change the subject to Bon Jovi, for example, and you'd find I view it in a similar way to you. If I built my dream Bon Jovi setlist, it would be WAY different from what they usually play. However, songs like Woman in Love and 99 in the Shade aren't want their fans want. They want You Give Love a Bad Name and Lost Highway, so that's what Bon Jovi gives 'em. I found it interesting that in the book When We Were Beautiful, they mentioned that they'd love to play albums in their entirety or play the deep cuts because they think it'd be interesting, but they know the fans wouldn't go for it, so they stick to the hits. I'm sure Paul uses the same thought process. Now, for the setlist itself, here are my main thoughts: - I know a lot of you aren't raving Paperback Writer fans, but that's my favorite song, period. I'd like to see that continue to appear in the show. Honestly, with the exception of the 1993 tour, it really only became a mainstay in the past few years, and there are a zillion more songs that have been in the set for much longer that are well past their due. - Songs I wish would go that I suspect actually could without creating a mutiny: Let Me Roll It and Mrs. Vandebilt. Gosh, they weren't that great to begin with. - I'd also be cool with The Long and Winding Road, Let It Be, and Yesterday all getting the boot as well, but I'm a realist. - On the subject of Here Today, I'm sure guilt has a lot to do with why this gets played, but honestly, I think that by playing some of the more upbeat Lennon material, it makes for a much better (and happier) tribute. I never cared much for Eight Days a Week until hearing Paul blow the walls of the stadium off with it as an opener. I'm a convert now. - Hi Hi Hi was an AWESOME surprise. I like that the encore got its first real shocker since Day Tripper back in 2009 or so. - I was STUNNED that Jet didn't get played. That was the best song off of Band on the Run. I was a little bummed, as well as bummed that I've Got a Feeling and Got to Get You Into My Life also got bumped. - Where was The Word? It seemed like it only lasted a few shows. That would've been cool to hear. - I always seemed to catch him on a night where I've Just Seen a Face, despite being in the acoustic rotation, was always on its off night. I was thrilled that I finally got to hear it last night. - I'm glad to see that, in addition to Paperback Writer still going strong, Junior's Farm, Nineteen Hundred and Eighty Five, and Ob-La-Di, Ob-La-Da have become staples. I remember how excited I was when I heard each of them for the first time live, and especially with Ob-La-Di, Ob-La-Da, they seem to be big with the crowd. - A Day in the Life/Give Peace a Chance was finally removed. It was cool the first time, not the second and third. Ditto Sing the Changes. There are many more thoughts I have, but I've rambled on long enough.
-
I agree for the most part...A Day in The Life/Give Peace a Chance was really becoming a bit boring at my 4th time hearing it...TOTALLY agree that no Jet was a disappointment...of all the songs in the show from BOTR to drop, I'm not sure why he chose that one! :
-
If I never hear OB-LA-DI live, I will be quite ok.

Jet is a hard song to sing especially with his much weaker voice these days. My only surprise is that Maybe I'm Amazed is still in as in Verona he sounded pretty poor singing it, the worst i've heard him sing it, he just can't do it justice anymore.

How sad, sometimes you need to understand that you are not young anymore and adjust.
