Set List critique

I will say that the people who are still going to his shows repeatedly are not going for the music, but are going because they have made friends with others who do the same, and it's a party for them. Why else would anyone continue to pay thousands of dollars for the same show?
Not all of us. I still go to enjoy a night of great music not to party hard and drink. Yes I have friends that go with me but the main reason we go is to listen to the music and see Paul perform live when we are able to go see him.

Can't argue with that. Nice to know that Rod Argent is still recording.
Ditto

Wilco is doing 6 shows at the same venue & every night is a different setlist. I can't even imagibe Paul ever doing something like that.
The Beatles rarely ever added a song or did an encore, and they never changed the setlist during a tour. Most other touring bands don't either, even playing a two night stand or more they may only change a song or two. But Paul is touring now behind the 50th Anniversary of The Beatles. It's been a bit of a big deal here in the States. The current setlist goes down pretty well. No reason to change it!
We all have our favorites and no need to change the setlist I agree, the set list definitely goes down pretty well, I just saw the show in Atlanta and I've seen a few concerts on this tour and they were all very special in my opinion!
Wait...lemme check...this IS the setlist critque thread right? I agreed with Randy & I will agree with you. His shows are full of energy & waay powerful. I love standing in the first few rows & rocking out with everyone. All I am saying is that other people are doing different setlists & wouldn't that be cool? Paul has a bigger catalog than anyone (I assume) & I would just love to hear more of his solo music. I am not dissing what he is doind so no need to defend him. I love him too.
I agree. This thread is to critique, and throw ideas around. Certainly McCartney has a killer set list that works and thrills tens of thousands of people. I wish he would come to New Mexico and play it!! Ha ha! However, this is about wondering "what if?" What if he played My Brave Face or Hope Of Deliverance? Or surprised with renditions of Take It Away or Girls School? Just ideas and thoughts. He has an amazing back catalogue. He brought it on himself!
again...a few weeks ago. edit to add...we all will keep going over this again & again. This is the place to critique the setlist. So carry on.

I haven't been to any of Paul's recent tours. Why, you ask? Not because I couldn't, because I didn't want to.
Just curious: how many have you been to and what was the last show you attended?
-
I've seen Paul eight times: 1 show in Denver in 1976, 3 shows in Los Angeles in 1989, 1 show in Las Cruces NM in 1993, 1 show in Boulder, CO in 1993, 1 show in Denver in 2002, and 1 show in Las Vegas, NV in 2009. At this point, I have calculated that I have seen about 90% of his current show performed live. So, while I would love to see him in Albuquerque, I can't really justify the cost and time off from work to travel out of town for that. My complaints are less with the set list and more with him not playing here. But I still think it is OK to say "I wish he would play THESE songs and not THOSE songs."
-
He has worn out THOSE songs.
-
Like I said in an earlier comment, sad will be the day that none of us can hear THOSE songs performed live by the gentleman who penned them. And sadly, we are approaching that point probably sooner than any of us care to admit. In the meantime, I intend to see him as much as I can before that time does come.

And I will be very sad that I won't ever hear the majority of his fantastic catalog live.
-
Reminds me of the old Phil Collins inside-joke: Is he gonna play THAT song again?

This is a bit of emotional manipulation. Of COURSE, if one can see Paul McCartney perform Yesterday and Hey Jude, they most certainly should! I have eight times, how many times do I need to? I've done it. I know what it's like. It's great. But the only thrill left for me in this subject is to see him do them in my home town. I gain nothing by going to Lubbock or Denver to hear them AGAIN. To give support to what you are seeing, even seeing him once is a real gift.

What he should do (but never would) is do a tour where he plays every stop twice. Night 1 is the current set list which is Beatles and Wings heavy. The second night, which may need to be at a smaller venue within the same city, would be billed as all solo work 1980-present.

Interesting you should say that, I read U2 is thinking about doing something similar in 2015: in each city play one concert that is huge and hits and another concert that is more intimate, acoustic and more obscure songs. Or acoustic arrangements of hits and such. They said the challenge is making sure people know which concert they are getting!
-
Agreed. The key would be in the marketing!
-
I wonder: is he going to wrap up the current tour this month and begin a new tour next year?

My guess is new. 2 years seems to be the longest he's ever stuck with the same tour name.
-
I would imagine he will tour next year.

The cartoon posted this evening in the Louisville thread pretty much sums up the current state of affairs. It shows Paul today playing to a woman in the audience but in her mind she sees the Beatles.

Yes, it sums it up quite nicely. And that's who he is playing for.

Nail on the head....
