Set List critique

Hey guys, remember me? I just thought I'd add in on my dear friend's audi post. I haven't been to any of Paul's recent tours. Why, you ask? Not because I couldn't, because I didn't want to. I will say that the people who are still going to his shows repeatedly are not going for the music, but are going because they have made friends with others who do the same, and it's a party for them. Why else would anyone continue to pay thousands of dollars for the same show? I would be more active on here, but there is nothing new to discuss with Paul. It's the same old thing, and while he may be stuck in the past, I'm not.
I've seen him 5 times in 12 years and it's ALL about the music. Everyone has a right to their opinion, obviously but this is one of those clear polarizing topics where one side will never be able to convince the other. My only question is why bother coming on here just to complain and spread negativity? That part I don't get it. Let the people who still enjoy the shows, enjoy them without having to defend themselves. The negative posts can be saved for another forum.
This thread was labeled, "Set List Critique", am I wrong? So I'm sure I'm not the first in this thread to complain about the set list. I'm also not attacking anyone. I never said there was nothing wrong with going to see your friends and sharing a good time, now did I? All I did was state why I don't go to the shows anymore (because of the set list being the same) and the fact that many people only go to enjoy a good time with their friends. 5 times is nothing compared to the folks I'm talking about. As you can see, a handful of regular boardies have finally reached their point with Paul where enough is enough. I'm sad and never thought the day would happen, but what can you do?
McCartney recently played Greensboro NC which is approx 1 1/2 hr drive from where I live in Charlotte NC. Years ago, I would have traveled to that show and paid the high ticket price but not anymore. I am not going to hear much of the music I have loved from 1980 to today so it is not worth it for me. I actually tried to win tickets to the Greensboro NC show in the contest and told people if I won I would give them to a boardie. I find it truly amazing that people get upset with people who actually want to hear more music from McCartney's entire career. Myself and others understand at this point it is going to be Beatle/Wings heavy but would the world end for first timers if McCartney cut the Beatle songs from 27 to 22. Cmon people, do we really think first timers are going to the show and say I sure hope McCartney plays "For The Benefit of Mr. Kite" and "All Together Now" - lol. His current tour is almost like going to a Broadway show, the same songs will be played and the lines (his stories) are repeated night after night. IMO, his band has lost their spark and they act very well doing their "rock star" moves at the same moments every night. Finally, this is a McCartney fan site but does not mean that you have to think everything he does is wonderful. I think McCartney should love a fan like Audi who appreciates him as a total artist and not just some rock icon from the 60's.

I wonder: is he going to wrap up the current tour this month and begin a new tour next year?
My guess is new. 2 years seems to be the longest he's ever stuck with the same tour name.
That would mean setlist changes, let's see what he wil come up with.

So realistically that means: What Beatles songs seem likely that haven't been touched yet? There really aren't many pure McCartney songs left, obviously since he's been digging into Lennon's side of things lately. "Another Girl" or "What You're Doing" would be realistic songs for slots in the early electric set.

Including the songs you mentioned, I think the only songs that are "pure" McCartney Beatle songs that he can realistically do (I'm not counting "Wild Honey Pie" or "Oh! Darling," because, as much as I would like to hear him do "Oh! Darling," I just don't think he has the vocal chops to do it anymore) are "Hold Me Tight," "When I'm Sixty-Four," "Martha My Dear," "Rocky Raccoon," "Honey Pie," "Maxwell's Silver Hammer, and "You Never Give Me Your Money" (a full version, not just the fragmented version in '02).

Has he done When I'm 64? She's Leaving Home?

He's done "She's Leaving Home" (in 2002):
But he has not done "When I'm Sixty-Four". -
I would like to see him perhaps swap out Here Today for Two of Us for his John Lennon tribute. And I don't see him doing When I'm 64 now that he is actually 72 I would also love to see him do Rocky Raccoon, that is one of my all-time favorite songs!

Rocky Raccoon would be cool. I mentioned When I'm 64 as a song he has never done. And do you REALLY think he needs to be 64 to sing the song??

I think he's made a point to NOT sing it over the years though. It seems a little more than coincidental that he spent his entire 64th year of life NOT touring...

True. Which is funny. But he'll play All Together Now, which is a lightweight children's song, a throw away, really, while When I'm 64 is a song about enduring love.

A DJ here (who has interviewed Paul every time he comes to town & then some..she even went to the White House gig) has said her mom in a nursing home plays the piano for the people & has changed that song to When I'm 84...lol. She told this to Paul & he stole her story...or so she says!

I was listening to Memory Almost Full "on my way to work" today (see what I did there) and I began thinking about Audi's comment on how he doesn't respect his own solo catalogue. Then I got to thinking. I don't think it's a matter of him NOT respecting his solo catalogue, I think it might be more of a matter of him thinking that the fans (or at least many of them) don't respect it. Which to me, makes it even more sad. It's one thing to not think your own work is solid; it's another to think others don't respect it. I mentioned in an earlier comment the book I just finished Man on the Run. It talks about Paul during the 70s and how he spent a decade basically trying to outrun his past. In many respects, he still is.

and it's the fact that the time is limited to perform further solo/wings songs . Exactly this + yankeefan7 statements are the reason for the majority of this thread!

I agree that it's high-time they rehearse a new act. I used to dig how Rusty and Brian were at Paul's side at the beginning of "Helter Skelter." Today -- in all seriousness -- it looks like they're just going through the motions.
-
Question: do you all think Paul is hurting or tarnishing his legacy in any way by his tour habits (be it the setlist, the show, the stops, etc.).
-
He's securing The Beatles' legacy to the point of overkill. By disregarding his own albums, he's only underscoring all the criticism he received in the '70s.
-
I'll add, however, that what the fans and critics have realized is that Paul McCartney has consistently put out superb music since Flowers In The Dirt. But you wouldn't know it from going to his concerts.
-
it really would be nice to have at least one song per album like "Hope Of Deliverance", "This one", "Flaming Pie", "English tea" etc
