Set List critique

Mull was a smash hit in the UK. Not sure why it is not a regular in his set list when he plays there. Arguing that it was a "Christmas hit" is just ridiculous. YES, it climbed the charts in that time period, but it is not a holiday song, per say, like Wonderful Christmas Time. I can see not playing it in the US, since it was not a major hit here. Kind of a weird tune if it can only be played where there are local bagpipe players!!
Coz in general nobody likes it at any time of the year other than Christmas! It's not a Christmas song in the way Wonderful Christmastime is in that it is not exclusively associated with Christmas, but to try and argue against an association with Christmas that is now so marked the song has effectively become a Christmas song is frankly ludicrous. Anyway, I heard Paul co-wrote it with Santa.
Maybe this is a UK vs. US thing, but I'd never for a millisecond thought of Mull as being associated with Christmas.
I second that.
-
I Want To Hold Your Hand went to no. 1 in the UK at Christmas time, does that mean it's a Christmas song too? No. Ridiculous.
-
What is rediculous is someone in the U.S. telling people in the UK that Mull is not associated with Christmas ! Feel free to write a letter to Paul too who clearly thinks and feels the same. I'm sure he would play it in Oz and New Zealand for that matter too seeing as there is strong Scottish link there - like Canada.

It is a UK thing. it is a big accomplishment to have the No. 1 song in the charts at Christmas..or at least it used to be. Mull was released in Nov. 1977, was a huge hit, and was the Christmas No. 1 that year. It would have been on the radio all the time. I believe he did Mull at all the UK shows on the 1979 tour but the full pipe band was only at the Scotland shows (which I saw). After that I think Mull started getting limited to Scotland and Canada, because I never saw it again in London, but have seen it many times in Canada. I didnt expect to see it in Liverpool last week.
-
So, is anyone expecting him to do someyhing unique today in Marseille? Apart from Michelle, of course.

No, what is actually happening and is ridiculous is the UK is telling the rest of the world that Mull is a Christmas song. It isn't. Is it ASSOCIATED with Christmas in the UK? Sure, I guess. But that is no reason to not play it in July. As I said earlier, I Want To Hold Your Hand was a no. 1 hit in the UK at Christmas, but no one says that is a Christmas song. If they did, I would call it ridiculous as well. It's also ridiculous to play a song only for a certain ethnic group, when loads of people who aren't Scottish really love the song. One of the weirdest hits in the world, I guess.

You really are failing to read what people are writing - Nobody, not 1 person has said it is a Christmas song. However, it is associated with Christmas here in the UK for reasons already stated. Something Paul clearly thinks too - hence his reason to only play it outside Scotland/Scottish areas of influence at Christmas. Why would he play it in July - I dont get how some people were shocked that he didnt play it - he has never given any indication since releasing this song that it would be performed in Liverpool in May. Maybe you should direct this at Paul himself, I dont control what he plays and when/where/how/why etc! I dont disagree with that - why has he only played Hope of Deliverance in Latin America or Michelle in France or French speaking regions - obviously I know why but I'm sure loads of people would appreciate these songs.

You are the one failing to understand a simple concept. Paul played Michelle and Hope of Deliverance to a crowd with a lot of Mexicans in Las Cruces, NM in 1993. As it should be done. Addressing Paul in a fan forum is what we are all doing, in a sense. Paul's choice of songs for his set lists bewilders a lot of people. He has a lot of hits he just won't play. Mull is one of them. Don't get mad at me because Paul and Denny Laine wrote a hit song in 1978 and people would actually like to hear it in concert. Same with Silly Love Songs, With A Little Luck, and many others. Last I checked, Mull was a hit in the UK. Why is it so unrealistic and demanding that people who live in the UK would want to hear a song in concert that was a no. 1 hit in the UK? Oh, because it was a hit in December, and therefore can only be performed in December. Ok. Got it. :

You, Sir, are beyond help. 1. Those were staples in 1993 and were played across the whole world tour that year - Off The Ground came out in 1993. 2. You are kind of answering your own questions - Pauls choice of set bewilders people but he's consistent with what he does. Irrelevant if people want to hear a song at a concert he hasn't giving any reason in the past to suggest that this would happen - hence why people shouldnt be shocked that he didnt play it. It was also number 1 until the 28 January so a UK gig beteween January the 1st and 28th could well be lucky enough to hear it

Beyond help? About pop tunes? Whatever. I suppose, according to your logic, Paul needs to see what month every song he performs hit the no. 1 spot and only play it that month. I see your point, if Paul has never played that song in Liverpool, why expect it? Ok. Fair enough. But why even have threads about songs people hope Paul will play, or unexpected songs he has played? I suppose people should just shut up and enjoy whatever comes their way. Right? You could use some help with your logic, BTW!

How about Twist And Shout with Bruce Springsteen, if he does show up in Marseille tonight? They did it once.

Let's talk about the Marseille setlist: any info so far?
-
Actually I'm pretty happy with the recent changes to the set. I would have never expected "Temporary Secretary" until the Budokan soundcheck. Some long overdue changes have been implimented. I wish he would drop "Paperback Writer", "My Valentine" & "All Together Now" still
-
I wish he would drop Let Me Roll It, Paperback Writer and Lady Madonna.

I'll never get tired of "Let Me Roll It" but that's just personal taste...always one of my all-time favorite Wings tracks. "Paperback Writer" and "Lady Madonna" I'm sick of...but they could certainly be someone else's 'all-time favorites' too!
-
At the shows I attended last year, Let Me Roll It has a huge response from the crowd still. Way bigger cheer than Paperback Writer and Lady Madonna. And it is my Metallica-loving sons' favorite Wings tune. Leave in the set list!!!
