Set List critique

While Inspite of all the Danger is obscure (and believe me I'd rather he play something else) at least he can introduce it as a song that he wrote with George Harrison. That's probably how he justifies it and can get away with it. There are certain solo songs he could add, like Hope Of Deliverance (at least in Europe and South America), Tug Of War, This One and My Brave Face, but stuff like Smile Away, Big Barn Bed, The Mess and Getting Closer? Nope. Nobody knows those except us harcore fans. I would love to see him perform more solo material (I'm a bigger fan of his solo career than the Beatles) but it's simply never going to happen. Most of his fans wouldn't care to see a show like that and Paul wouldn't risk it.
-
yeah, Early Days it's very beautiful song, it sounds for me like one of his oldest classic. why he won't play it - it is guitar song - in this part of concert with Blackbird and Yesterday.
-
Ane, disagree again! There are way too many sources that are asking McCartney to change his setlist, more and more people are asking for these songs. Don't believe me, go to Youtube and see what people are saying, they are asking the question why doesn't McCartney perform this song or that song, so he could very easily do it. He could tell the crowd this is a song from my first solo album, or this is a song that Linda really liked or you get the idea, he could introduce those songs just like he could introduce any other song. There is no excuse, Paul McCartney could and should perform more of his Wings/solo material!

He could introduce "Little Willow" as a tribute song to Maureen Starkey who died of cancer and the song was effort to comfort Ringo's children. It is a beautiful song and would be wonderful in acoustic set. I could not imagine people not loving this song.

Hi, I?m newbie here, I?m from Czech Republic, Prague.... Let me explain you, that for general audience and places where Paul?s visits are so rare (as my hometown - it?s his 2nd show after 12 long years!), I think that most of audience (me included) expect to hear mostly hits like Hey Jude, Let It Be, or Live and Let Die or Band On The Run. It?s because most of audience never (or just once) had an opportunity to hear these songs done by Maestro Sir Paul McCartney - so... please be more kind to this "general" audience. I know - for fan who saw xyz concerts and Paul McCartney?s show are "regular event" for them, they might be disappointed but - those songs are so stunningly well-written that I simply do not believe for a second that anyone can be bored by them. Actually - when I saw the setlist, the only "tiny" disappointment for me was absence of I Saw Her Standing There.
be welcome here ptr1986! I think u statement could help us to dicuss the topic into a win-win direction for us all (maybe). Therefore I've got some questions: According to u nick u are born 1986? (By the way I was born 1980) Are u mainly beatles song fixed or does u like Pauls entire career? Please reflecte the current setlist are there some songs apart from the big hits u would like replace with other especially SOLO or wings songs (hits!) (give us examples). Thank you!
Yes, I was born in 1986. I consider myself generaly as "rock music fan" - of course I love Beatles (and frankly speaking I?m and always have been "McCartneyist"... not "Lennonist") and Wings.... I actually have to admit, that I had to search for couple of tracks because I wasnt sure at first moment (and I dont have a courage to look for that song done with Rihanna and Kanye West...), but I know nearly all of the set. For me - Paul is the greatest composer of our era, and I?m saying that despite the fact that Beatles are not #1 band for me (just a little hint - at the earliest stages of their career they did couple of Beatles covers - Help and We Can Work It Out )... I have to say that I?m very excited to know that I?ll hear NEW stuff (I love that album!) but also I have to admit that I?m looking forward most to the MOST "classic" stuff (because I simply heard it only ONCE live, and this is going to be 2nd time) - plus I always LOVED Let Me Roll It! So... I dont have issues with solo stuff, but actually when you go to Paul McCartney?s show as "general audience member" (but who is still PMcC fan who simply didnt have much opportunities to see him) - I think that it?s Hey Jude, Let It Be, Yesterday.... or Band On The Run, Live And Let Die.... the most known songs which are your main interest. Me included.

I would go back to the soundcheck songs, they could easily be brought in to the main show, why not try; Coming Up for Save us Let em in for Maybe Im amazed Every Night for Eleanor Rigby Just on another point when it comes to Beatle's songs, i would say people may not associate them as separate compositions i.e a John or Paul song, but Beatles as a whole restrospective of who wrote them. I for one when first getting into their music thought the whole catalogue were 50/50 Lennon/Mccartney tunes , I only discovered later on that this wasnt the case. Because Pauls singing AHDN as the opener it goes down a storm as its well known and by the fab four.
A very good point. Although, I'd argue that Let Em In really wouldn't be that "new", but it sure would sound better than Maybe I'm Amazed. And he'd probably be more likely to through in Every Night (and why not Bluebird too!) into the acoustic band set than replace "Eleanor Rigby". While I don't find it necessary to play every single show, it's clear that it is not going anywhere.
Yes its fallen into the same league as Let me roll it, a long term stayer. With MIA its pretty clear he's struggling with it, but on a good point as ive said earlier, there will be 9 songs ive not heard if the setlist stays the same. Letting Go, Fool on the Hill, Love me do, You wont see me and Here there & everywhere will be great to hear.

That would be nice, but I doubt 90% of his audience know who Maureen is. Heck, as sad as it is, I wonder how many fans under 30-35 even have a connection to Linda at this point, considering she passed away 18 years ago.

This is an Eric Clapton concert from 1998 (about 3 years or so before the Driving US Tour). Nearly the entire first hour was all brand new songs. And Slowhand didn't "lose the room." The crowd ate it up! Is McCartney capable of doing the same thing?
-
what do you think about Struggle? it is "bad" to sing on concert? I like it

99.9% of the audience wouldn't have heard of any of those songs and would use them for bathroom breaks. Maybe he could get away with it if he played in a small club for a few hundred people and charged $50. But he's never ever going to do that.
sorry but this argument the so called "bathroom breaks" don't corresponds to the reality at all. The truth is a bit more complex than audience going to bathroom breaks... Please remember Mrs. Vandebilt doesn't it worked? This song is from BOTR ok but it isn't a hit! What is in the case of HiHiHi? That I couldn't put here other songs is the result of the known setlist scheme. IMO there is one chance to stop bathroom breaks we only need standing tickets in the floor!
I agree with mrflamingpie. Paul doesn't need to drop ALL the Beatles songs & use MrPie's examples. Just mix it up a bit. Hits from THROUGHOUT his career. And BTW if he did that setlist in a small club...he could charge $3000.00. And he'd get it.

fine. But u didn't answer wheater u like to add another SOLO/Wings song(s) instead of song(s) which are in the current setlist. You wrote u like the album new. Would u be disappointed if paul added "Alligator" (sometimes soundchecked during the outthere tour) or "I can bet" instead of "I've got a feeling" or "Being for the benefit of Mr Kite" or "Back in the USSR" or "Eleanor Rigby"? Is it a desaster if there is "Ballroom Dancing" instead of "1985 (a great song of course but also in the set since 2010; with one on one it's Tour number 4)"?

Back In The USSR is "must have" in former eastern block countries. I love Eleanor Rigby. Changing other mentioned ones? No problem. Again - I?m satisfied with the set (as guy who is going to see Paul for the 2nd time), but probably I would not have many issues with these changes.

Thank you. IMO that's exactly the argument why it isn't a disaster for "first or second timers" to replace some beatles songs with some other wings/solo hits or songs from NEW. At the end we had a better mix maybe similar to the tours 1989/90 and 1993. But who could advise it Paul : I suppose it's nearly he himself
-
No love for the super fan. Over the years, I heard the same gripes from fans of Stevie Nicks, Chaka Khan, Rolling Stones (that's sorta' debatable), Tina Turner, Jamiroquai and on n' on...
-
I'm honestly considering selling my ticket, I expected more changes, not some rehashing of the previous tour with some 'new' songs that aren't even entirely new on the setlist... But of course that's just my impression and I'm sure others will like it
-
Maybe he will open with a new Wings/Solo song tonight/tomorrow (depending on where you are ) in portland? I hope so

When did it become a risk for McCartney to play McCartney songs at a McCartney concert? What, exactly, is at risk? Is he afraid concert goers will leave saying " I can't believe he played a bunch of McCartney songs"?
