Set List critique

A couple of spiritual-based, side projects with like-minded friends. Nothing pop/rock, unfortunately. Speaking of: A major musical based on her life is in the works, and Turner is expected to help with its promotion.

-Tina Turner (76 years old)
Curious, when has Tina performed recently? I thought she retired years ago?
She's recorded a little recently, but, yes, you're correct in that she has retired from touring. She is doing more world music/ambient stuff here n' there. Her voice is very much intact.
Thanks! I didnt think she had performed anywhere lately, but I was unaware that she had been doing some recording. I will have to check that out.
"Mother Within" [2014]:
'' Quite a contrast from her last pop track, released when she came out of retirement to tour one last time (again "It Would Be A Crime" [2008]: -
Setlist aside. The decline in his voice since the end of the Out There tour and now is dramatic. There is no power in his voice. I wouldn't be surprised if he can't even complete the tour. I will follow "voice watch" with interest as the dates unfold. Did he really fly to and from Fresno from LA on 3 consective days for full dress rehearsals then perform on the 4th day? Maybe time to kill off these insane 1 hour mini concert soundchecks now.. He's singing almost 4 hours every concert day - and it's killing his voice. Fool On The Hill and Here, There and Everywhere from Fresno were just two songs that had me reduced to tears.

Here, There & Everywhere was amazing live this year, it's down a key or two & it sounded amazing, IMO

It is an amazing song, so it sounds good even in his current voice and down a key or two. But Mops is right, his voice is very wobbly on this one. Compare 1993 to now:
I also question the wisdom of having such long sound checks, he is not 30 or 50 years old anymore. A 30 minute sound check would suffice for these shows. I notice on the video for Portland on Here There and Everywhere he kept moving his head away from the mic as if to clear his throat, he my have congestion or an upper respiratory cold or something. Hopefully it will clear up as the tour progresses and his voice will be stronger, and not get worse. -
I'm really worried about his voice, it seems to be a new level of bad on this tour. Watching clips of him try to sing songs that he hasn't in a long time such as Here, There and Everywhere and The Fool on the Hill just made me feel sad. Could this really be the end of touring for him? What a difference compared to when he last sang these songs Here, There and Everywhere 2008
The Fool on the Hill 2003 -

I am holding out that he just has a cold. Having said that, it doesn't have to be the end of touring. He may need to cut back even more though. While I can respect him wanting to hit as many small markets as he can, he should have done that in 2002 and 2005. And cut out the long sound checks! They really are unnecessary. Also, it is not unreasonable for him to cut down his set list to 25 songs and play for 1.5 hours. He would have to charge less. So what? He is McCartney, a legend. He needs to take better care of himself.

The Fool on the Hill 2003Hoping he's just warming up. If it was really a problem, he probably wouldn't be doing 30 shows this year. Sometimes it seems like he's crazy, but he knows what he's doing. But let's face it, his voice isn't even where it was in 2014. 2015 was pretty rough at some points.

He may know what he is doing, but even in 1990, he pushed it and lost his voice, and a few shows had to be postponed.

unfortunatelly we realized the trouble with "Here, There and Everywhere" and "The Fool on the Hill" (+of course ) "Maybe I'm Amazed" too. IMO this must means the end of touring. Should Paul is honest himself it's time for other/new songs in the setlist (Promise to you girl, I can Bet, Take it away, Rocky Raccoon,.. )

"And cut out the long sound checks! They really are unnecessary." Very simple answer to why they are long, he charges big bucks for soundcheck package. He could probably do four songs for a soundcheck and be done with it. One on bass, one on acoustic guitar, one on piano and add another just for the heck of it.

Yes. Exactly.

Age is not as big of a factor as you might think. I think smoking marijuana for many years is the true culprit. It has done irreparable damage to Paul McCartney's voice. There are many singers in Macca's peer group who still sound like they did 30+ years ago: -Daryl Hall (will be 70 on his next birthday) -Sammy Hagar (68 years old -- sounds phenomenal!!) -Stevie Nicks (68 years old) -Tina Turner (76 years old)
Add Billy Joel to that list. For me, I haven't seen Paul since 2014. There are 11 songs in this current setlist that I haven't heard yet, so I'm excited. Yes, I am a little irked that there were virtually NO solo additions. That's a little weird. With a Little Luck could've went in place of Here There and Everywhere on the piano, and he could've done HT&E in the acoustic set. The second half could've used a big shake up. I always thought Girls School would make a rockin encore song. Deep cut or not, it would get the place going. This could very well be my last time seeing him, so I'm going to savor it. I'll likely still have 6-7 more years of Bruce Springsteen shows, 20 years of U2 shows, a few more of Billy Joel (the residency is 30 mins from my house). But Paul, this could be it. On a visual level though, the show is spectacular. I think Out There was a massive shakeup because Paul rebounded from On the Run (which had minimal effects, boring setlists) with a new show with tons of new songs, and LED stage, lasers.... Out There and On the Run were two totally different shows. One on One is a slightly more modern Out There with a few shakeups. Regardless, I'm excited to see him, dreading this week of ticket sales. Hopefully luck will be in my favor.
Saw Billy Joel last December in Charlotte NC and he sounded great and put on fantastic show. He actually did a bit of "Hard Days Night" as a mashup with "River Of Dreams".
Funny you've mentioned Billy as he and Paul are the two shows I'm going to this summer...I've seen Paul before but never Billy, really looking forward to them both (but maybe Billy a wee bit more )

Worth noting that Billy Joel regularly pulls out different deep cuts at each of his concerts too. He doesn't play quite as long as Paul, and obviously doesn't have as huge of a catalog but still comparable to a degree.

If Billy can so can Paul. But will he? Also, Billy has the wisdom to know his limitations, and do a shorter set.

He also lowers the about two whole steps on almost every song...sounds like Billy has taken all of our suggestions!

Yeah, I've been looking at this setlists over the last couple of years and watching videos on YouTube...he has some core songs he always plays (~50% of his set) and the rest, he constantly rotates not only the deep cuts and covers, but the order in which he plays them. THAT is how to build a setlist!

Very valid concerns. However, I think he'd finish the tour, even if it meant relying on Abe to practically be a co-lead vocalist every night.

Watching videos from the first three shows for One On One, the other band mates are already doubling him on a good part of the set. Which is cool.

The thing is, valid points about Paul's voice aside (and they ARE valid points), the man can still PLAY and play well. I don't mind if he has to take a bit of a backseat, vocally, while still performing instrumentally to his usual high standard.
