If modern songs were the big hits that his older songs were, he would definitely play them in concert. But I think it is more about the audience's reaction than chart position. He plays a lot of Beatles songs that were never singles, whereas "Uncle Albert/Admiral Halsey" went to #1, won a Grammy, and is on several comilations. Has he ever played it in concert?
I don’t think so. ️

Paul plays mostly Beatles songs because he knows that is what the audience wants to hear. Every single person in the crowd cheers as soon as any Beatles song starts. How many would cheer for "Average Person" or "Name and Address"? He needs the adulation.
Those on a website such as this might agree it is a shame how he neglects most of his career. Poll those in the audience and I think all would be familiar with the Beatles, half might know his Wings hits, and perhaps a quarter would be familiar with his biggest solo hits.
And...that is his fault for not playing more solo songs all along. If he had, people would be more familiar with them.
I so agree with you Oobu, while I grew up with the BeaTles and LOVE EVERY single song...the background music of my early life...
I also got older and Wings and solo Paul songs became the longer and more joyous and upbeat songs of my life. (Happy Music) The songs I went out with my friends and danced to, the love songs on dates and at parties. I have friends who love the BeaTles and are huge fans, yet, when I turn them on to Paul songs they are floored!!! It's a two sided coin...
Now what three songs from ES where played in concert? Have looked this far and only see Fuh You mentioned. No concerts near me this year

Come On To Me and Who Cares were the other two.

Great post Nancy R. As many of you know on this site, I am a vicious defender of Wings and Paul's solo career. Yep, I think Band On The Run is a superior album to Sgt. Pepper; yep, I think RAM is the finest rock album of the 1970's and was what The Beatles would sound like in 1971; and, God help me, I think Silly Love Songs is a masterpiece. And at the McCartney shows the Wings songs get a huge, excited response. IMO the two biggest responses of the night are for Live And Let Die and Band On The Run. Again, IMO, the two biggest bathroom/beer runs were during Love Me Do and Benefit Of Mister Kite. For my distractors on this site I ask this; actually attend a concert and then get back to me.

Agreed on biggest responses, with 'Let It Be' and 'Back In The USSR' and of course 'Hey Jude' etc. But 'Love Me Do' is one of the biggest singalongs of the current set, across all shows I've seen since it got added.

And you never answered my post of 9/13. ️

Not sure what you mean with that response, I would say most WOULD laugh at the comment BOR is better than Pepper, or Ram is the finest album of the 70's.
I agree about LIALD though the fireworks are a big reason for the response. BOR gets a nice ovation but not bigger than the Beatle hits. ANd FYI Love ME Do has been a huge hit at the gigs Ive been to.
1985, Hi Hi Hi,Letting Go have all been met with polite applause at best.
So in reality, while I enjoy all of Pauls material, his two biggest post Beatles responses are either from a James Bond film aided by pyro, or from his most successful post Beatle album BOR. Not really a stretch that those would be met with enthusiasm.
My Valentine, the other Wings tunes cited above , and the ES stuff have been the real bathroom break tunes in concert if we are being honest. That explains the Beatle heavy set in a nutshell.

From time to time I've made set list suggestions along the lines of how Paul could throw us hardcore fans a few more bones while mostly sticking to his "give the people what they want" formula. But while on vacation recently, I started thinking, "What if Paul did a show just to satisfy me? What would I want him to play?" Here's what I came up with. And yeah, I know he couldn't pull off a few of these vocally anymore, but hey, it's a fantasy:
Take It Away
Junior's Farm
Friends to Go
Ever Present Past
The World Tonight
Getting Closer
Single Pigeon
Martha My Dear
Ballroom Dancing
Hand In Hand
Mr. Bellamy
Do It Now
People Want Peace
Sally G
Put It There
Confidante
I've Just Seen a Face
One of These Days
I'm Carrying
Mull of Kintyre
Get on the Right Thing
Dominoes
You Won't See Me
Old Siam Sir
The End of the End
Beautiful Night
Encores:
Somedays
Oh! Darling!
Sing the Changes
Let It Be

that's a very great list Bruce. I would fly around the world for such a setlist !!!
I wonder what would really happen if Paul performs beside his usual selection. Would the avarage crowd spend extended bathroom/beer breaks till the moment he perfomes only a few beatle songs? As we can see in the case of his concerts during 1970's there were alternative and sucessfully concerts...
My Dream Setlist would somethink like this:
01 The World Tonight
02 Every Present Past
03 Getting Closer
04 No Value
05 Uncle Albert
06 Despite repeated warning
07 Back Seat of my car
08 Hope of deliverance
09 Wanderlust
11 Put it there
12 And I love here
13 Martha my dear
14 Jenny Wren
15 Pipes of Peace
16 Dominoes
17 What you're doing
18 I don't know
19 Anyway
20 House of Wax
21 About You
22 My Brace Face
23 With a little Luck
24 Magical Mystery Tour
25 She loves you
26 I'll get you
27 Great Day
Encore:
28 Good Night Tonight
29 Sgt. Peppers lonely hearts club band
30 So Glad To See You Here

Of course, on any given day, a few slots in my just-for-me set list would change. There are a number of tunes I really love but couldn't quite fit in. And everyone here could come up with their own list that , like mine and mr. flamingpie's, would be predominantly songs Paul has rarely or never played live. Sigh...

It's such a shame that there are so many.

I'm sure some of you are sayiny...Not Again. But here we are into 2020 and Paul has announced 2020 tour dates already. I'm hoping for all the European fans attending one of the shows that Paul has time (between all of his side projects) to really put energy into a "true" Refresh. I liked the addition of the "live horns" in 2018-2019 but that was the extent to any real "Refresh". Many have stated that the shows have become "stale" and it all starts with the songs. Too many of the same songs from the last 5 years and longer. And I'm not talking about true signature songs that Paul has to play.
These are my opinion only, but if Paul is really going to change the show, it has to start with the setlist. And no better place to start with a few new songs form his last album Egypt Station that he failed to play in 2018 and 2019. Last year, Paul only played 4 Egypt Station songs and I believe they weren't even the best songs on ES (not even close in my opinion). Hopefully 2020 fans might hear some of the best ES songs...I Don't Know, Happy With You, Confidante, People Want Peace, Hand in Hand, Dominoes or Do It Now this time out.
Looking at the setlist from his last 2019 Show (Los Angeles) here is my wishlist for a real "Refresh"
Hard Day's Night - Paul/Band have been doing HDN long enough...How about going back to "Hello Goodbye"
Junior's Farm - I'm fine with staying with this but I wouldn't be opposed to changing out to another Wings' rocker like "Magneto and Titanium Man" from Venus and Mars
Can't Buy Me Love - Since he did this one last year, another early rocker like "I Saw Her Standing There" would be fine
Letting Go - love this one with the new horn section
Who Cares - Change this out for another ES song like Dominoes
Got to Get You Into My Life - the new horn section really spruced this one up so stay with it
Come On To Me - change this out for another ES song like Confidante
Let Me Roll It To You - even as a huge Macca fan, this one has become so tiresome (along with the same Hendrix story) so how about a Wings' song like Getting Closer from Back to the Egg or Only Mama Knows from Memory Almost Full
I've Got a Feeling - how about World Tonight (Flaming Pie) since FP is the next Archive release
Let 'Em In - another song played too much over the years - how about "Every Night" from the McCartney album
My Valentine - Paul's been playing this for some time now so how about "Hand in Hand" from Egypt station
Maybe I'm Amazed - Again, Paul's been playing it so often so how about "I Don't Know" from Egypt Station
I've Just Seen a Face - How about Too Much Rain from Chaos and Creation
In Spite of All the Danger - How about Little Willow from Flaming Pie
From Me To You - stay with this Early Beatles' song since it was just introduced last year
Dance Tonight - change this up to Ever Present Past from Memory Almost Full
Love Me Do - stay with this since it sing along will help save Paul's voice for future shows
Blackbird - stay with this
Here Today - how about Early Days (from the New Album) as a new tribute song to John
Queenie Eye - how about "Young Boy" from Flaming Pie
Lady Madonna - another "too many times" song...how about "Do It Now" from Egypt Station
Eleanor Rigby - stay with this...another classic like Blackbird
Fuh You - change it out for "Coming Up" from McCartney 2
Something - change it out for Friends to Go (from Chaos since Paul often tells the story that he was thinking of George as he wrote it)
Ob La Di -stay with it...another sing along that will help Paul's voice for his future shows
Band on the Run - classic...must stay with it
Back in the USSR - must stay with it for flow purposes if anything else
Let It Be - classic must stay with it
Live and Let Die - same thing...must stay with it
Hey Jude - another classic singalong
Birthday - change it for "Hope of Deliverance" from Off the Ground
St. Pepper - change it for Penny Lane
Helter Skelter - change it A Day in the Life from Sgt. Peppers
People Want Peace with a sing a long at the End (this would also be timely relative to all the world's events)
Getting Better - end the show with another classic from Sgt Peppers
I just made this Setlist up off the top of my head without any research but I know we would never get changes as drastic as this, but I can still dream. Something like this would have a lot of great material for the heavy Beatle crowd and at the same time, it would appeal to the true Macca and Solo/Wings fans too. For Paul, it would also show the world that he has had quite a career since his Beatles' career ended.

Bruce...great list and I would have seen Paul a few more times in the U.S (my last show was 2010) if he did a show anywhere close to this. I just sent in a new post to this subject (Setlist Critique) yesterday off the top of my head very quickly but your list gave me a couple of more better setlist suggestions.
Unfortunately and you probably will agree, I don't think it's going to happen. Paul is a crreature of habit and he's the type of artist that is always doing new projects. That is good in a way because he is always working on new songs. As I said yesterday, a drastic change would take a lot of time for him. He would have to do a lot of rehearsing with the Band to see how all the songs (many that he hasn't done live before) would jell and how his "older voice" would fare. And maybe some of the songs we love just wouldn't sound close to the studio recordings. For example, I would love to hear "Wanderlust" but could Paul sing it today. In conclusion, something like we're suggesting would take so much time for a man so busy with new projects. In some ways we might be better off with Paul just staying with the same stale setlist he can do in his sleep so he has more time for these new projects. At least we'll get his new music.
PS...I love all your songs and I had to laugh when you listed "Sally G". My sister's name is Sally and I always had a soft spot for "Sally G". See my latest post and I actually had many of your songs on my "dream" setlist without me seeing your "setlist just for me" beforehand. The only song missing (and it's actually an ES song) that I would have to have on my "setlist just for me" list would be "I Don't Know". I just love, love this song and I still can't believe Paul didn't do it last year. I think it is one of Paul's greatest Solo songs and it's right up there with MIA.

Martha My Dear, Mr. Bellamy, What You're Doing (the old Beatle song), House of Wax and Sing the Changes would be great additions for 2020 and I would take Coming Up (he's done this plenty of times in the past) Ob La Di (same reasoning) and Love Me Do off my proposed list immediately above.

Very cool stream here gentlemen. BUT, since I have been to several McCartney shows in the past three years, I believe I can give a better response, since I have actually attended several live shows recently. When you are actually at a live show, you can pretty much accurately respond to your requests. Here goes:
Sorry, but Junior's Farm explodes into the audience. Even I was shocked at the positive reaction.
My favorite song on ES is Dominoes, BUT , not sure it would be a great crowd reaction. Who Cares was really responded well in my shows last year. The same with Come On To Me; the audience really, really dug this song. Not sure Confidante would have the same reaction. And sorry, but Let Me Roll It is kind of the Wings Hey Jude. The crowd digs the heavy hard rock song. And sorry again, but Let 'EM In is incredibly excepted by the crowds I attended. And the video of marching bands is very, very cool. Again, the audience loves, loves this tune!!
Yes, I know, 'Maybe I'm Amazed' is a stressful time for us McCartney fans, but, the audience simply weeps during this song. And Dance Tonight is a hoot; with Abe dancing, the crowd just has a blast.
Sorry, I could go on and on, but just a couple more suggestions; Helter Skelter is an absolute show stopper; almost as powerful as Live and Let Die; don't ever drop this tune!! And yes, one of my all time favorite Beatles song is Penny Lane, but please Sgt. Pepper brings the house down.
Yes, I am a huge, huge, Wings fan, I would love to hear Helen Wheels, So Glad To See You Here, Dear Friend, Getting Closer, Silly Love Songs, etc, etc, but I am just so glad that Sir Paul is still playing live in 2020, anything he sings, I'm there.!!!

Thanks for your sincere response Wingsoverkc. I appreciate it when someone gives me the other side of the coin. Since you have been to a few very recent Macca shows, you certainly have a leg up on us relative to seeing and feeling the crowds' reaction to various Paul songs whether they are Beatles, Wings or Solo.
I would be the first to admit that I'm not the average Paul fan attending his shows. Many might be around my age (I'm 70) but they tend to be far more Beatle Paul fans (and a little bit Wings) but certainly not the McCartney Solo fan from the 80's onward like you and me. I'm also much more of a fan of Paul's latter Solo career like from the 2000's till today. I try to listen to the Beatles' Sirius channel (Channel 18) but I often change the channel because they seem to play so many songs I have heard just too many times. In most cases these songs are great songs but how many times can you hear them. Maybe it's just the specific times I try to listen to Channel 18, but they also don't seem to play the really good Paul Solo songs I love. And for some strange reason, they seem to play a lot of recent Solo Ringo songs.
Because of some of the reasons above, I have chosen not to attend any Paul shows since 2010. That last show for me was a very enjoyable show because Paul did add a lot of Post Beatle songs I loved like Venus and Mars/Rock Show, Letting Go, 1985 etc. Conversely, over the last 7 or 8 years Paul has just repeated too many of the same songs and even some "unusual" songs he did add weren't close to my favorites like Temporary Secretary, Four Five Seconds and Mr. Kite.
I just happen to like variety but it's hard to fault Macca. He's playing to the overwhelming majority and as I said, Paul is always involved with new side projects whether it's books, film or new songs. If we want brand new music and other material perhaps it's good that Paul isn't over working about his current tours and trying to change the setlist. I'm different... when I go to see Paul, I'm far more interested in hearing songs I've never heard live before plus I want to hear songs I particularly like from his Post Beatles' career that have not been over commercialized.
The setlist I quickly put together still has a lot of songs that would appeal to the Beatle Paul fans (but with some changes so we get some variey) while I also tried to appeal to the hard core Paul fans like you and me. I would like to hear songs like Dominoes and I Don't Know that are not only great songs but in my opinion easily measure up to the great Beatle Paul songs that everyone knows.
In reality, Paul will probably add a couple of songs to the upcoming Europe 2020 shows but that will be it. He might add a couple of new ES songs but I don't expect much more. As I also siad, Paul is a creature of habit so we likely get many of the same songs and stories. Just my opinion and just the fact that I live in Florida and far away from these shows, I won't stress about it.
-
I love Paul to death, but don't expect to see him live again. I just don't need to see him do songs I've mostly heard him play before with a weaker voice. It's okay. I had a blast at the six Macca shows I've seen, and I'll always have the memories.
