Set List critique

WixRocks!:
I'm glad the tickets picked up their pace as showtime neared. But judging by how long it took him to get to Fargo, I'm guessing he won't be back again.
He's 72! How many times do you expect him to go back to Fargo?

Glad to hear the crowd in Fargo ND gave Paul a great reception. I think it is cool that Macca is visiting some of the remote areas around the US. As I said in a previous post, I do think it is an absolute shame that Paul isn't into throwing out a total surprise song based on where he is performing. And in this case and as others have mentioned, the obvious song (a Beatles song I might add) was Rocky Raccoon. In this day of technology, it would give instant national publicity to the tour. It would have been the talk of the Fargo show. With 38 songs, it seems easy to perform one surprise somewhere in the Set. Nothing fancy but in this case, a little acoustic rendition of Rocky Boy would do. You know far in advance that you are playing in Fargo ND so just have Rusty brush up on the song in advance of the tour. Paul just has to sing. Even if he messes up a bit on the lyric, the audience would still love it. Even from a sales point of view, you would think that Paul would want to start developing a collection of rare tour songs for a CD at some point. Not trying to be critical but I just wished Paul and company would show a little creativity in advance of the shows. As far as hyping the tour, there wouldn't be a better way than coming up with a little, one song surprise to many shows as possible. You can only go so far with a fan or two coming up on stage.
I'm actually really, really surprised he didn't play "Rocky Raccoon." As you noted, it seemed like an obvious song to play in North Dakota. If he can bust out "San Francisco Bay Blues" every time he plays in San Francisco, why couldn't he do "Rocky Raccoon" in Fargo?

Yes, the Fargo show rocked and was really great. I was disappointed that he didn't play Rocky Raccoon (a missed opportunity, to be sure), but I can assure you no one left the concert disappointed. Of course, that is an observational proclamation, I did not interview each and every attendee I'm starting to mellow out on the set list topic a bit. For example, I brought my teenage son to the concert--who has never seen Paul before--and one of his favorite performances was Eleanor Rigby (us hard cores are a bit bored with that one, yes). I guess there is a happy medium here, but even I was happy to see the 10-12 different songs than what I saw during the "Up and Coming" tour opener in Phoenix a few years ago.

Well San Fran is almost always played at soundcheck so he "knows" it well enough. LOL.

I hope Paul plays Appreciate during one of the soundchecks here, and this time someone captures and shares it. parlance

Audio & videotaping at soundcheck are not allowed and they do walk around and watch people, so I doubt that if anything were to be captured on the sneak, that anyone would admit to it on the official site. As for Rocky Raccoon, would have been nice but the "Black mountain hills" are actually in *South Dakota so perhaps that is why he didn't sing it. I think this set list has the fewest changes in recent years, i think only having the NEW songs swapped in and a few songs removed to fit them in. Everything else is in the same order. It is what it is. I personally would not miss Live and Let Die but everybody else goes crazy for that one with all the pyros, so I know it's never going away.

I will say again for the umpteenth time...This is not a concert for forum members or multiple concert goers. It's a concert for the general public.

And my response to that; there are only like a dozen or so songs (at least from his current set list as constituted) that would be 'essential' (imo) for casual or first time fans to hear....that's a lot of flexibility to where he could cater to first timers and frequent fliers alike...and the little flexibility he shows nowadays is by far slanted towards Beatles music... It would be one thing if (hypothetically) he had never played Penny Lane or All My Loving...then, sure - I can see those have some kind of priority over post Beatles work. But he's ignoring a lot of quality, well known Wings/Solo material in lei of songs like All Together Now and For The Benefit of Mr Kite Conclusion - he can most certainly put together a set list that caters to new/first time fans while throwing more than several nods towards those who are fortunate enough to see him a number of times

Other major artists play a mix of their hits and obscure gems. This tour is called OUT THERE which can certainly imply there will be some "out there" song choices. As it is, the tour should be called "Paul McCartney Plays The Hits." Or "Hits and Misses!"
-
With the exception of her comeback tour in 2008-09, Tina Turner ALWAYS kept her setlists updated with current material and neglected classics for surprises. However, like McCartney, her closing set featured her tried n' true signature-songs. Her remedy for that was that she almost always concluded her shows with a brand-new song...and it always worked.

Black mining hills
No, it is "mountain" http://www.thewhitealbumproject.com/lyrics Rocky Raccoon Lennon/McCartney Now some-where in the black moun-tain hills of Dakota There lived a young boy named Rocky Rac-coon And one day his woman ran off with another guy Hit young Rocky in the eye Rocky didn't like that He said I'm gonna get that boy So one day he walked into town Booked him-self a room in the local saloon.

Nope... in the same article it explains that it is mining. Here it doesn't JUST copy the lyrics. See song 5 on this page. http://www.thewhitealbumproject.com/songs/side-two/ Its frontier-folk nature even compels McCartney into character. He drops the refinement and light Britishness of his usual vocal in favor of rootsy, more roughhewn inflections. The way he mumbles through ?black mining hills of Dakota?, his down-home delivery of ?that boy?, and his mispronunciation of ?Gideon? (?Gidjin?) all insert McCartney, as a sympathetic narrator, into the song?s comic theatrics. His bumbling-bard persona is of a piece with the mood and spirit of ?Rocky Raccoon?. But this is way off topic...

Wow. Maybe that's why he won't play it live. Can you imagine having to do that every night?

Probably not here, but there are definitely soundcheck videos at YouTube. It would, of course, be best if he'd play it during the regular show. parlance

Just to circle back to the discussion on this particular thread last week, I just checked the Instagram feed for tonight's concert in Lincoln. Nearly every post (if not all) is by first time concert goers, seeing McCartney for the first time - most of whom are saying things like "This is a dream come true!" "I'm seeing a Beatle , I never thought this would happen!" "I can't believe this is happening!" Etc., etc. No one is saying how they can't believe they are seeing a Wing! So again, this is who Paul caters to at his shows - right, wrong or indifferent. As others have pointed out, the average concert goer is not on this board. Imagine these people going and then not hearing the classic Beatles tunes. Just wanted to share because it is fun to see people so excited for their first macca show and definitely helps puts things into perspective.

Bear in mind, though, that this is not exactly a town Paul's played in regularly over the years. It's not so easy to say how many first-timers there were in Chicago or will be in San Francisco, areas he's visited a fair amount.
