Is the US one really abridged, I mean the text, or does it just not have all the extra photos?
Thanks MetalGod. Totally at a loss to understand his marketing strategy. He said the unabridged is almost twice the amt. of wds. : So, what is the shipping charge to get the UK version sent over here, I wonder. Very frustrating.

I'm wondering that as well from Michigan. You can either pre-order it from amazon.uk or wait til they are available on ebay. It looks like the book is going for around ~$120 after the exchange. I would imagine shipping to be $10-$15 standard international. I'm going even going to get the abridged version if this is suppose to be the 'be end all' of Beatle biographies. I'll wait my time to get the author's cut. But yeah and extra 800 pages is like a whole other book; though it is a two book version for the early years. I would imagine the next volumes ot be the same as well.

I'm getting the expanded edition for Christmas (I've been told not to buy it myself because it's been ordered for me ). I can't wait but having to wait that extra month is going to be brutal! At least I've read the abridged version already, but I must be warped if I am fully planning on reading it all over again (and then some!) when I get the expanded one

You'll have to let us know if the Deluxe version is worth the extra money after reading it.

i don't know whether to be happy for someone if they get the extended version of the book or just cry because i wont have it myself. i guess i will just shoot myself for not buying the extended version. now if you will excuse me i am going to scream curse and throw shit. okay maybe my response is way over the top, i just cant help but to feel a little cheated. just because I've spent less for my book i feel like i am missing a lot which annoys the hell out of me. in fact let me get off this thread because am having negative feelings again. BETTER YET am not even sure whether i want to even read my copy of the book. but i guess this is what happens when you can't afford to spend more then what your accustomed to. i am going to stay off this thread because i don't need to be reminded daily how financially unfortunate i am. i am not blaming anyone for this mind you but all of a sudden i feel out of place here. i'll be back when i am able to measure up financially with the rest of you . i feel like at this point i just can't compete with other fans. i hate feeling like this but hey it is what it is.

http://www.listener.co.nz/culture/books/mark-lewisohn-interview-the-long-version/ I boggled after 900 pages. Surely to God there?s no more to be known as a casual reader, I thought. But there?s an extended special edition, I then discovered, which is almost twice the length again. What have you kept for that? What actually happened is I considerably overwrote when writing this book. Because I decided this was the one real opportunity to do this subject as thoroughly as it deserves and in order to tell the story right I would write whatever needed to be written for the story to be understood. In other words, I wasn?t hampered by the word count target I had been set. So I just started writing and ended up with 780,000 words, which is huge, absolutely immense. And my publishers looked at it and said, ?Well, this is absolutely fantastic, we want to publish this, but we do still need this book to be at a shorter length for the mass market.? So I had to create the mass-market edition out of the bigger one. It?s 900 pages but it?s actually abridged. And how frustrating a job was that? Like killing your babies? It was very tough. I?ve always struggled to cut more than a few words before and here I was having to cut something like 50%. The way I wrote the book both made the task difficult and easy. It was difficult in that it was very hard to think what parts of this book were expendable without the meaning being lost. I feel very strongly that this [abridged version of the] book is complete in itself and therefore what it?s lacking are layers of a deeper story, which are all tremendously interesting and rewarding, but layered. So as long as I haven?t cut out the very top layer, it is still present in the abridged version. There are no real holes in the abridged version but the bigger one goes deeper and deeper. And believe me with a book like this whenever it goes deeper it just stays as interesting as it does earlier.

Read the introduction and the first ten pages last night. I can only say it's riveting and hard to put down.

It's so heavy that it is easy to put down(....on a table)

Mine will be here tomorrow. I'm psyched.

-
I'm sure the version that most of us have is quite alright. Give it a chance.
-
Well he's pushing the version that cost 4 times as much...Why wouldn't he?

I have the deluxe version on order and will just wait for its publication and ignore the abridged version. I've waited years for this book so a few more weeks won't make any difference. Sure, £75 is a lot of money for a book but this isn't just any book. In theory it should be one of the most important books ever written about the Beatles. And in the past I'm sure I have spent hundreds of pounds on less well written books on the subject. I will add though that I won't be buying the deluxe version of the next installment as it covers the era of the Beatles which holds the least interest for me. I'll stick with the abridged version for that book.

well this book don't seem all that important to me its just restating what we have already read about the Beatles. and that is not worth me going completely broke for . but if you think its worth it i cant help that. to each its own i guess. sorry for being a pessimist but i am just not in the business of making these authors rich when i am struggling myself. i don't see myself doing it and i probably never will. i mean they are only getting rich off of me and other fans for rewriting whats already been written before. it really doesn't makes any sense to me

Just got mine. It is heavy. Can't imagine what twice as many pages feels like.

Completely freakin' true! If I like the library version, then I can always buy the Deluxe at Half Price Books later on. They always get the overflow from things like this.
