Saturday, 7th November, 1959: 16-year-old George playing his first electric guitar, a Hofner Club 40, at the Co-Operative Hall on Rice Lane in Liverpool.
According to a 1996 Christie's auction catalogue, he was "with Eddie Sedgewick on bass, and a drummer, at the coming of age party of David Minchella".
According to George, "fed up" with his acoustic Hofner President, he'd done "a straight swap for a Club 40. I thought it was the most fantastic guitar ever.”
“The Club 40 that George got was originally mine,” Ray Ennis of The Swinging Blue Jeans would recall. “We had our residency on Tuesdays at the Cavern and I remember we did the swap there. I swapped it for his acoustic Hofner, which was sunburst, with f-holes. I haven’t got it now – because at the time, who thought The Beatles would be so famous? In those early days we used to get fed up with guitars very quickly, so we’d swap and change a lot.”
John had bought his own Club 40 - or 'Club Footy', as he liked to call it - from Hessy’s Music Shop in August of '59.
