length of shows Beatles vs Paul solo
-
Hi,
that's my first post and question.
I am just curious if Paul made a statement concerning the lenght of shows.
When you compare a Beatles show duration of 30 min with that what Paul delievers until now with more than two hours showtime plus an extensive sound-check it's an enormous difference.Did he ever comment why Beatles shows were that short? And what forced him (other then the sheer desire of making music) to give us such extended showtime up to now?
Regards

FrankHas anybody seen Paul + a support band? I have seen him "live" about 5 times ( including a rehearsal) and have never seen any support. Not that I wanted to.

Never. Paul didn’t need an opening act! People would have booed them off the stage unless it was another famous band!

Frank@gazon I remember in an article maybe in "You Give Me Answer" that Mr. McCartney said that he was doing long concerts to satisfy the fans so that they would get their money's worth. I may be distorting. But that's what I remember. I'll try to find the article.

I don't think most bands need an opening act, usually the record company has an opening act to launch a new band in front of a big audience. I seem to remember just one time Paul did have an opening act back in the days of Wings. It might have been a guy call Dwight Shultz. Or Dwight something or other. Can't really remember, it was a long time ago. I never went to that show.

When I saw Eric Clapton about 7 years ago he had Jakob Dylan and The Wallflowers as his opening act.

Paul had opening act (The Script) when I saw him at Citifeld (NYC) in 2009. They were actually pretty decent and the crowd was not hostile to them.

@wandy Yes, I have been to a few McCartney concerts in South American countries during the 2010s in which a support band played a few songs before everything else (DJ, video montage, Paul).

They should have a Beatles tribute band opening for Paul, then they could play all the ( Beatles) songs Paul would be playing when he takes to the stage. A bit like a parody of the early days when groups coming on stage would play all the popular songs that the Beatles were going to play, before they came on stage, thus enspiring Lennon and McCartney to start writing their own material. By the way, I'm joking.

They could have the Beatles tribute band do all the songs Paul can’t sing anymore! jk too.

OMG! That is brutal! But I sadly have to agree️

@littlewillow Thanx littlewillow for your answer. I dunno why it came across a support band in most of the other answers. That was not my question. But you stick to the point. And I can understand Paul' s statement of the extended show times. But why did they shortened the Beatles shows from the marathon sessions durating with a couple of breaks nearly the whole night they did in Hamburg to the 30 minutes? How can that be satisfying for those hot-blooded musicians?

Frank@gazon You're welcome. I tried to answer as best as I could because, I don't know everything and why the Beatles made that 30 minutes of concert completely over my head. I'm sorry. What I'm wondering is if playing several small concerts at a time with short durations didn't bring in more money? That's a thought. But I honestly don't know. I've never really cared about that kind of detail.
I sincerely hope someone can answer you. I'll actually be curious to know the answer too.

Little WillowI think they played the long shows in Hambourg because they had to. It was expected of them. They had to "mak show"!! "Mak show"!!! Bring in the punters.!!! Later when they started playing Theatres in London, for example, they didn't even play for 30 mins sometimes. Mind you, I can't blame them. With the kids constantly screaming all the way through the show, I bet they were pleased about coming of stage after 20 or 30 mins. When I went to the Casbah Club in Liverpool I meant to have asked Rory Best why he thought the Beatles only played 20 or 30 mins, but I forgot. I did have a nice chat with him, though, and I filmed it too. Best £10 I ever spent.

FrankDid you read the link I posted 6 days ago?
Basically, the answer is that that was just the way it was back then in the ‘60s. Then in the ‘70s with better sound systems and equipment, rock musicians began to play longer sets. It was just an evolution - one group started playing longer and then they all figured they had better play longer too!
