check this out.. this ones an interview with George from 1982. He recounts the following: Mukunda: Can you think of any incident where you felt God?s presence very strongly through chanting? George: Once I was on an airplane that was in an electric storm. It was hit by lightning three times, and a Boeing 707 went over the top of us, missing by inches. I thought the back end of the plane had blown off. I was on my way from Los Angeles to New York to organize the Bangladesh concert. As soon as the plane began bouncing around, I started chanting Hare Krishna, Hare Krishna, Krishna Krishna Hare Hare/ Hare Rama, Hare Rama, Rama Rama, Hare Hare. The whole thing went on for about an hour and a half or two hours, the plane dropping hundreds of feet and bouncing all over in the storm, all the lights out and all these explosions, and everybody terrified. I ended up with my feet pressed against the seat in front, my seat belt as tight as it could be, gripping on the thing, and yelling Hare Krishna, Hare Krishna, Krishna Krishna Hare Hare at the top of my voice. I know for me, the difference between making it and not making it was actually chanting the mantra. Peter Sellers also swore that chanting Hare* Krishna saved him from a plane crash once. Mukunda: Did any of the other Beatles chant? George: Before meeting Prabhupada and all of you, I had bought that album Prabhupada did in New York .(SIDE A / SIDE B) , and John and I listened to it. I remember we sang it for days, John and I, with ukulele banjos, sailing through the Greek Islands chanting Hare Krishna. Like six hours we sang, because we couldn?t stop once we got going. As soon as we stopped, it was like the lights went out. It went on to the point where our jaws were aching, singing the mantra over and over and over and over and over. We felt exalted; it was a very happy time for us. http://krishna.org/george-harrison-interview-hare-krishna-mantra-theres-nothing-higher-1982/ whutchyall think about that? I might have to start trying that. the sailing around the Greek Islands part.

I had a funny conversation with a friend of my wife, she was telling me that she meditates.. said it helps her sort of calm down and reset and recharge at least once a day. I said, recharge? have you ever heard of just taking a nap? (at which point I cracked up, not sure if she laughed).. but she said it was kind of like sleeping, but the beauty is you can rest and yet remain awake and in an anware state.. and blah blah blah.. she's kind of full it if you ask me.. but it does beg the question: does meditation reduce the amount of sleep one would need on a daily basis? cause that would be cool, stay awake for more of your life. I mean hey, your sitting still with your eyes close.. whats the difference? I wonder how often people fall asleep while meditating? seems like a fine line, the one between someone who's perfected the art of achieving a really deep state of transcendental meditation, or someone taking a nap

meditation is absolutely awesome, kapoo. it is truly the Best, honest. if you believe that "you" are not your body, and that "you" are not even your mind or thoughts, that the "real" you is an eternal, indestructible Spirit, then you can get the real meaning of meditation. yes, we in the West, see the physical value (lower blood pressure, reduced stress, lower cholesterol levels, etc) of meditation, but the real meaning is to still the body and quiet the mind, cease the seemingly endless chain of thoughts, and "be". Just be. be aware of your consciousness. transcend the body and the mind and see yourself for what you really are: an eternal, unchanging, droplet of GOD the creator of all that is, both seen and unseen. Once you get there... is is absolutely amazing. You don't want to come back. The kingdom of GOD is within you.

I do my best, have a quality period very early in the morning, but then, I out and "at it" for most of the day and into the evening. I do get a bit of quiet time at night. And ultilmately, it doesn't matter: west or east; or asian, white or black; or male or female. When we see who we really are, all that surface stuff does not matter at all. Speaking only for me, I hope to see that more often. Being honest, I , of course, get caught up in the crap of the world and momentarily buy into the surface shit.

that's beautiful, rikki red streak (your discourse on meditation)...being in a bit of a pressure cooker environment presently (not really that bad, just sporadically a 'bit' of one) i realized i have to meditate now and then. i dont have a choice, i have to. sometimes people need to be forced into healthy, beneficial actions ...or inaction, regarding meditating, i guess. when paul went to view the birthplace of jesus in bethlehem jerusalem before performing in israel, that truly moved me quite apart from feeling gobsmacked by his courage in going to israel in the first place. maybe john would have made a huge deal out of it, a performance art piece, had he done that with yoko in tow. thereby garnering loads more attention for the act. but it would have been for the right reasons, to draw attention to a worthy cause. paul meaningfully and tactfully balanced it out by visiting a school for arab children in palestine so 'both sides' would be honored. israel and palestine. and also the christians in 'the holy land.' then when he and ringo performed at david lynch's thing for children meditating in schools, i was very impressed and inspired, again. ditto when rusty anderson wrote the band says a prayer while in a group hug before taking the stage. i saw a picture of paul waiting to attend a yoga session in long island a few years back. performing at the children in need charity was moving. paul mccartney is spiritual in these quiet very beautiful ways through actions more than through words, not through saying more or less 'look how spiritual i am' in an overt manner or through hanging out in ashrams or chanting... his meat free monday speech was practical and environmental verging on the political, yet the subtext was non violence to the planet and its flora and fauna, a loving non violent stance and attitude towards animals that is so beautiful. he does good works in a quiet unassuming way, without seeming to be bragging about it and coming from a place of the ego. in contrast john and george almost seemed to make a big show of it. george just about relentlessly beat us over the head with his hari krishna activities and songs. but he and john were nevertheless being truly spiritual, and doubtless ringo too although his was and is rather under the radar except when he went to india (didn't stay as long as the others though) back then and presently for the david lynch foundation. i' m sure he's done a lot of good too.

thanks, Susy. And I agree with you ahout Paul. He is a lovely man -- a beautiful Spirit. Yes, George was so obviously spiritual. But I think we all know that it was truly genuine. George, I'm sure, has helped millions of people on their spiritual path. And John, too, was so overtly about peace and love. I'll bet that anybody who is visiting this website knows that John had a wicked violent side, too, but later, became the champion for peace. But as for Paul... you're right, Susy. He is kind of quiet about it. But look at his life work: We Can Work it Out, Let it Be, Getting Better, Let 'Em In, Hope of Deliverance, and on and on... He has always been positive. A beacon of hope. Paul has always been about forgiving each other and loving each other: a familiar message, wouldn't you say? Love each other? Forgive each other? Paul is great, loving spirit -- and like you said, Susy, not so overtly as John or George -- but it is unmistakable if you look at his 'record'.

Haribol! I have a lot to thank George for. He helped me to find my spiritual path and opened my eyes too. I am in the Hare Krishna Movement (i'm not an initiated devotee yet but I want to be). I have always enjoyed reading George's experiences in the Krishna Conciousness movement. Sometimes I wish that I could talk to George about my experiences in KC I don't have anyone else really to talk to about it. I know that George probably would have enjoyed talking to me about Krishna. Because if one is a devotee of Krishna, then that is all the devotee wants to talk about and that is why George tried to stay away from his past about being a Beatle because he was focusing his thoughts on Krishna only. God Bless him.

a spiritually oriented topic seems to bode well for new beginnings in the new year ahead...'let it shine on, let it shine on, let the light from your lighthouse shine on me.'--paul mc. this topic makes me think of the beatles in india. and i started thinking about when the maharishi was charged with forsaking his celibacy stance insofar as flirting or something with mia farrow, for one. one book says magic alex made that up wanting to decrease the guru's influence over the fabs... but i read an account by mia farrow herself. she'd been meditating with the guru in a private audience. when they rose, suddenly the little indian reached out and gave her a hug. she fled in a panic, wondering if he'd made a pass at her. but years later she decided otherwise, that it was merely a kind affectionate gesture he might have made often in similar private audiences. i don't think he meant that in a sexual way, it was platonic and spiritual, and the poor spiritual guy got a raw deal. lennon said he thought the guru gave him a dirty look as he left the ashram. perhaps it was more of an annoyed, questioning glance. it would have been understandable for the guru to feel perplexed and annoyed. they left so suddenly, and all. i used to make up little 'beatles in india' packages to sell on ebay sometimes. they usually got sold.

Susy, I wonder what really happened with the Maharishi in India too. Magic Alex does not seem very trustworthy to me. And I've got to ask-what's in a Beatles in India package?

hi rocky they were bundles of various items of beatle memorabilia related to their time in rishikesh. examples: george harrison cds, his 'all things must pass' songbook, pictures, spiritual books and beatle books, beatle fan magazines, buttons, etc. all stuff i'd bought myself off ebay and passed on to other fans. there was a thick tome penned by a rich american lady who was at the ashram at the same time as the fabs and wrote about that and her spiritual journey in general. now i wish i'd kept it all.

i had 'the beatles in rishikesh' picture book too several copies. much sought after. i'm wondering why the fabs and friends were so appalled by the guru's flirtations (if he did that, and that's a big 'if'')--they appeared unwilling to engage in a celibate lifestyle themselves, far from it--except george, who went through phases when he tried to off and on, according to pattie boyd's autobiography (she didn't go for that much when he did). :

I read Pattie's book. I'll never understand why she left George. So what if he meditated for hours. She really seems to regret her decision.

I?m reading the book ?Dark Horse?, which has some interesting stuff in it. It?s prompted me to pick up a couple LP's recently of Apple records artists from yesteryear, so far I?ve picked up Jackie Lomax and the Lennon produced 1972 album by Elephants Memory. Both $12. anyway! So I?m reading Dark Horse, and there a lot of stuff about Krishna and Georges (and John?s) various involvements with guru?s and the sort. So in this book, a certain guru named Mukunda relates a hilarious tale and I just had to share it. Of just how crazy it got for George and the other Beatles with people always stalking them, etc: The Beatles were rehearsing at Abbey Road once in 1969 when suddenly the lounge?s suspended ceiling caved in and a young man with a shaved head, dressed in flowing robes, landed right in the middle of the astounded musicians. After he brushed himself off, he very respectfully began offering formal Hindu obeisance to Harrison, who was struck dumb with wonder. Looking slowly first from one to another, it was Lennon who finally broke the silence. ?He must be with George,? he said sardonically. But Harrison was not amused and gruffly offered the whacked out would-be devotee a stern ultimatum. ?Either you get up and leave now or Mal calls security.? The man then bowed low and began slowly walking out backward, all the while muttering to himself in Sanskrit. George looked helplessly at the others, who were by then all laughing hysterically.? That can?t be true, its way too funny speaking of Apple recording artists, here's one George signed up, and John and Yoko actually let them stay at Tittenhurst for a while, the Radha Krsna Temple. They released an album of chants or something on Apple in 1971! here the album cover: Ps ? respect the Power of Krishna!
