Sgt._Pepper:
The Beatles were extremely tight as a live band. A lot of their gigs early on in their career lasted several hours, so they were able to hone their ability to communicate musically, and not get lost while they played live. It was by the '66 tour that they grew tired of the mania, hence the less than inspired playing (i.e., the Budokan gig).
That's what a fan would say. A lot of other people seem to think they were as talented as the Monkees.
The Monkees were the Milli Vanilli's in their day!!!
Not true at all.

If The Monkees didn't play their own instruments until later, and someone else was playing and recording the music for them, they weren't really a real band until later. Please don't get me wrong, I do like The Monkees and their music, I just never considered them a real band until later.

I'm looking forward to seeing this too. I think like Peter Coyote, Ron Howard will do his best to keep it honest. I wonder if it will be remembered the way I remember it. Things like in those days it was Ringo who was the most famous & most popular.
-
Has anyone seen this yet? I just read that it was to be shown at Cannes this past July???
-
I'm still waiting for this documentary to come out, does anyone have any new news or info on this subject?

Makes sense. Aug, 2016 will be 50 years since The Beatles gave up touring completely.

sometimes I think the Beatles story is like the movie"Rashomon" 4 main players with different perspectives just finished reading "Behind the Locked Door" by Graeme Thomson you get a better understanding of George and from that the Beatles and the music industry. to me the Beatles were really just Paul and John and in any documentary both will have some interest in having some facts sugar coated.

After a trumpets blaring shout it from the mountain announcement this project really seems to have sputtered. I'm wondering what Opie Cunningham can do to really make this worthwhile? The Beatles mostly were ordinary live, usually badly filmed and recorded.
-
The Beatles were not just John and Paul. Anyone who thinks that has very little understanding of the Beatles universe and the phenomenon that surrounded the band.

There's many on this board think The Beatles was all Paul. :

On what basis do you claim it's sputtered. There was publicity when the project was announced. Typically, the next time there's publicity around a movie is shortly before its release, not while it's being made and finished. By and large the only time there's press coverage of a movie that's in process is things are going wrong -- it's over budget, director and star are fighting, etc. The relative quiet is a positive sign.

Fair points. But I'd have expected some teasers, updates, or leaks along the way. I suppose I'm not overly enthused owing to the content. We know the best footage. The bad stuff is really bad and it's reasonable to assume nothing Earth shattering has come to light. I hope for the best.

It'll be twenty second snippets of various live footage with a bunch of talking heads bleating on about how they changed their lives. Standard documentary fare. At best, they might put out a complete concert (Shea probably) as a bonus on the physical release.

I suspect so. Sadly the ONLY people with anything really interesting to say about those years are dead. Derek, Neil and Mal.

Funnily enough in a PM to a question asked of me earlier today I used that very expression: "talking heads."

Oh no, not Ron Howard.
