scottycatt:
He performed "The Night They Drove Ol' Dixie Down". That's the only one he played that isn't on the CD.
Is it a cover, or did Rusty write it? Or is it something from Eulogy or Ednaswap? Who did the original, if it's a cover?

I had an email from Brian this morning and am delighted that he'll be at The Roxy next week for Rusty's show - this show is going to be a blast, even Martha is flying in for it! Hope to see you there!
Oooh - Brian AND Martha will be there? OK, I'll be there! Corinne, will you be there too, I hope? ...any word if Abe will be there? It's not going to be a fun day at work the next morning... Sharon

You're absolutely right. All those who meet him say how polite and friendly he is. I remember reading this way back in July:
YoungGerl:
Personally, Abe is my favorite, but Brian is cool too. I was lucky enough to meet Abe and Brian and both were really nice. I remember that Brian personally shook hands with everyone in the group (about 8 people or so), and actually *introduced* himself as Brian as he shook each of our hands!
I remember reading that post too.
I'm flattered that you both enjoyed my post. From my experiences, I think he's the friendliest of the bunch (with Abe coming in a close second)...and I've even met Paul, but the whole Paul thing was in a very different situation, and of course I was much more nervous meeting him than Brian (plus it was one-on-one with Paul). Brian actually recognized my friends and told them excitedly that they were on the DVD (this was before it was released)! Wish I was going to a gig in Europe this time around...*sniff*...there's this bloody thing called MY JOB getting in the way though...what nerve!
corinne:
as his PR I have all the info
But not his setlist from Spaceland, eh? That's OK, I can figure it out on my own...it's just that one song that I'm not sure about...
corinne:
Also included The Night They Drove Old Dixie Down!
Did they do that at Spaceland a few weeks ago? There was one song that I didn't recognize...can you give us the setlist from the Spaceland show when you have time, Corinne?
harleyblues:
YEP! gotta save for a digital When I se Paul Brian & Rusty!!!! OH MYYYYYYYYYYYYY!!!
And what about Abe and Wix?
Did anyone see Rusty's gig in San Juan Capistrano last night? Can we get a report?
corinne:
YoungGerl, I wouldn't miss the Coach House, that's Rusty's first own show back in his "homeland" in years! It's going to be a blast!
Unfortunately, I can't. I have to dog-sit/house-sit in LA this weekend.
scottycatt:
I posted earlier in the week on the "Rusty" thread. . . trying to organize a group to make it to one or both of his upcoming shows. Did you catch that bit in Brian's webchat regarding Rusty's shows?
Yeah, I saw the transcript...it makes me want to go and possibly see Brian! I'm definitely more likely to go to the Roxy show rather than the one at the Coach House. My parents live about 20-30 minutes away from the Coach House, but I don't think any of my friends would go with me to that show. I might be able to convince some LA friends to go to the Roxy, though.
scottycatt:
I saw a girl taking pictures during the show. . . don't know if that was you or the other girl you mentioned in your post. It's ironic that I earn my living in photography, yet I NEVER take a camera with me if I'm not working!!
I took pictures "quietly" from my seat, without flash...I didn't get up at all to take pictures. I was sitting at the table behind the woman who was taking flash pictures. Mine probably won't come out, but they're getting processed tomorrow...I'll let you know what the outcome is. Who knows, maybe Paul will show up at one of the gigs...:-D...he is in LA... Sharon
scottycatt:
OMG!! That was ME who was waiting behind you for the autograph at the front desk.
Bah! I wish *I* had paid more attention to who was behind me, but I was in a hurry to get out so I didn't get a parking ticket! I should have just sprung for the $4 valet...almost the cheapest price I've seen for a valet in LA! (The cheapest was $3.50, I think, at Electric Lotus in Los Feliz, if that means anything to you any of you...scottycatt, that might mean something to you, since you live in the Hollywood Hills...) Scottycatt, are you going to any of the other shows? Are you going to the screening of Paul's new DVD at the Egyptian Theatre in Hollywood next weekend? I'm going to be there... Sharon
DianaDi:
WOW!!! Sharon! Thank you so much for the story! It was really great to found out how the Rusty's shows are going on. And what about pen? Would you like to start a bidding too?
I think I'll keep the pen...sorry.
tommycharles:
That "song you didn't know" - would that be Spanish Castle Magic? Because he did that at the other spaceland show, and at least one of Paul's soundchecks. Hendrix song, I think.
Could be, but I don't remember the lyrics containing Spanish Castle Magic...I was thinking while I was listening that it might be, because I know he played it before...but it didn't seem like it. Hopefully we'll find out from Corinne or someone else who was there.
I never really thought about it...I have a pen that Rusty used. So, here's my story: After getting lost a few times on the way to Spaceland, my friend and I finally got there, and parked on the street almost right in front of the club at around 7:30 or 7:45. We walked down (probably about 20 yards or so) to a Thai restaurant for dinner, then came back after 8 to see what was going on...as we approached the club I could hear Devil's Spaceship being played, which made me panic, because it wasn't 9 yet! So we go in, and there's no one to take our money...we walk a little further in and Rusty and the band are on a tiny stage to our right, and there's a group of 4 guys sitting at a table and THAT'S ALL, other than the 1 or 2 guys at the mixing board. At the end of Devil's Spaceship (I think that's what it was), everyone clapped and Rusty thanked the group of guys and the "duet of ladies" (or something like that...I.E. US). Luckily we later learned that it was just soundcheck...and they kicked us out until they opened the doors around 9:10, by which time a good amount of people had gathered outside. My friend and I were standing right outside the door, and at one point Rusty stuck his head out, and I grinned at him, and he grinned at me, then went back into the club. Rusty didn't go on until 9:30, which was a bit annoying because parking on the street is only free until 11:00 p.m., and then if you don't have a permit you get a ticket for $35. It was a great show, and I think he did all of the songs from Undressing Underwater, plus another song that I didn't know. I agree with scottycatt in that "Hurt Myself" sounds different live, probably because Brian, Paul, Wix, and Abe weren't there. Unfortunately I don't think any of them showed up to support Rusty. I tried to get a few pictures, but I don't know if they'll come out, since I didn't want to bring attention to myself and use flash (although one or two others were taking flash pictures). The show ended around 10:30 or 10:40 or so. I felt bad because we only had about 20 or 30 minutes to hang around before leaving, and I think I kind of bothered Rusty to get an autograph. He was chatting near the back of the stage (which was near the front door), still somewhat dealing with his guitars and such, and I waited until someone else got an autograph, then I asked for one. Of course, he was nice and obliged, but I feel that my timing wasn't that great...but it was 10:58 or so and I didn't want to get a ticket. He asked me my name, and I told him "Sharon," and then I told him that I thought it was a great show, and he didn't answer me, but kept writing. (Maybe he just didn't hear me.) I added that I had last seen him in Liverpool, and he still didn't say anything, so I decided to stop speaking. He was signing my CD cover on the front desk (where you pay admission), and the cashier asked him to move around because a line had formed to get autographs, so he did. He finished signing and handed the pen and CD cover back to me, and I said "Thank you" and he went to sign someone else's CD. I looked down at the CD cover, and saw that he actually had heard what I had said. He wrote: Sharon, From Liverpool to Silverlake! Thanx, Rusty Anderson Then we left. I felt dumb, as I have always felt after I met Paul and Heather (separate occasions), thinking "why didn't I say that?" Oh well, it's over, and it was a great show, and I have Rusty's autograph! My friend that came with me enjoyed the show...she's not a huge Paul fan, but she is a Beatles fan, and she likes concerts in general. Oh, and by the way...Rusty really does have huge hands. I forgot to tell my friend during the show, but told her before he signed my CD, and she agreed with me. She agreed with me in that he does not look as old as he is. Anyway, that's about it for now. I imagine Corinne will be able to provide us with a set list. Corinne, I'm sad that you weren't able to be there...I almost asked Rusty if you were able to show up, but I knew you were going to be busy that day. Oh, if anyone noticed, I had a purse that said "Sgt. Pepper's Lonely Hearts Club Band" (well, technically it says "...Heart Club Band" due to a miscalculation of space) shaped like the drum from the Sgt. Pepper album. I also noticed someone wearing a TRAVIS shirt - was that anyone from the board? I almost said hi to the guy, because Travis is one of my favorite groups/musicians after Paul. (It's a toss up between Travis and Jason Mraz, who incidentally can look a lot like Paul, if anyone has ever seen pictures of him...Jason Mraz that is.) Sorry for the long post, but I imagine people enjoyed it...:-) Sharon
corinne:
LA Rusty fans can meet him on Sunday after the show at Spaceland, he'll stay to sign stuff and get photos.
Oh boy! Is anyone else on this thread (other than me...) going to the show?
Beataholic:
However I'm curious about the girls that are shown in the DVD during sound check playing 'Matchbox' that were dancing where the seats, and on the side of the stage during 'Back in the USSR'...could they be the Band's girlfriends (and wives, considering that Wix is married)???? Or just lucky fans who won some contest to see the band doing sound check and watch the show from the side of the stage? I have no idea :
I think they are girls from the pre-show...
Anyone going to Rusty's show at Club Spaceland in Los Angeles on Sunday, April 4? I'm going to try to be there!
For some strange reason I always seem to associate Rusty with Viggo Mortenson (sp?). I have no idea why. Any ideas? (BTW, Viggo does nothing for me, if you were going to make that connection...) Also, for those of you familiar with the American restaurant chain "Islands," I was there last week, and I kept thinking how well "Catbox Beach" would fit in with the music there! Anyone else think so? Sharon
I heard him on the radio; it was only a 5-minute interview and he called in during the request hour. I'll try and tell you what they discussed (what I can remember anyway). They played the album version of "Hurt Myself" at the end of the interview, and gave away 5 autographed copies of Undressing Underwater to the first 5 callers at the beginning of the song. They talked about the Brian Wilson show and how Paul attended that; Rusty was there too (don't know if he was there the same night or sat with Paul) and said it was amazing. Rusty said that in the 60s, Brian played demos of Good Vibrations and God Only Knows (Rusty paused before mentioning the second song because he was trying to remember which one it was), and said Paul was floored after hearing them. Rusty talked a little about how he got Paul and the band to play on the record; he gave a CD of his stuff to Paul and Paul seemed to genuinely like it, so he asked Paul to play on the album, and he said "Sure!", so they did it in a hurry in 3 days between their US and Mexico tours. Chris Carter (the DJ of Breakfast with the Beatles) mentioned how much he liked the album and how he had been listening to it all week, and specifically mentioned liking Sentimental Chaos and Ol' Sparky. Chris said something about Ol' Sparky sounding like a T-Rex song and asked Rusty whether he meant it to sound like T-Rex. They talked about that for 30 seconds or so (I can't remember what else he said about the T-Rex thing; I think he said he was influenced by a song by Generation X - I've never heard of them). They talked about who else was on the album briefly (just mentioned names) - Stewart Copeland, "P Hux" (as Chris called him), and someone else who played horns or something on the album. There was some sort of story in the UK where Heather said that this will be a pot-free album, and Chris asked Rusty about that. Rusty said that he has not seen Paul smoking much and said some other stuff about it (can't remember, sorry). Chris joked that it could either slow down the recording of the album or speed it up. Rusty eventually didn't have a strong stance on the pot-free album thing, and Chris said "That's right Rusty, you know who your boss is!" (or something to that effect.) Chris said that their band's show was the best concert and best set-list he had ever seen (and he has seen many), and asked Rusty which songs he most liked playing. Rusty said that he enjoyed playing all of the of them, but specifically mentioned transcribing the harp part of She's Leaving Home into guitar, and also said of course Maybe I'm Amazed because it was the grandaddy of Paul solo songs (something to that effect). I think that was about it. A little while later, a guy called in who was a neighbor of Rusty's in La Habra. He said he had no idea Rusty was on Paul's tour; when he was at the show, he thought the guy looked like Rusty, and was amazed when Paul introduced him as "a local boy from La Habra". He said that Rusty was a guitar teacher at Whittier Music Company (or something like that), and he saw Rusty in a 3-piece concert. He also saw Rusty in Eulogy when was 12. Chris said that they've had about 6 people call in who have said that they've been in a band with Rusty at one time. That's about all I can remember. Hopefully someone else can add other things they remember. Corinne, perhaps you can help? Sharon

I heard yesterday on the radio, that its official, Paul will be on that concert ( i guess with the band we all know). Other performers: Britney Spears, Shakira, Bono, i dont remember others. Aparently the show will be transmited live on the internet, the cd and dvd will be available next year.I dont know more details but if i hear something ill let you know.
Hey, cool! When is the show? I wonder if Brian and Abe will play for Shakira...they were on one of her albums - possibly the most recent album? Laundry Service, I think it was?
beatlesrock:
OH! Darling:
Do we know if the band is currently in the UK working on the new CD?
The latest article in the news section of this website confirms that this is the case. It's heavily rumoured that Paul will be in South Africa for the concert but I don't know if it's been confirmed. I wonder if the band will play at the concert with Paul.
I haven't been following the concert news too closely, but I thought that they were going to have a show in LONDON as well? When is the concert slated to be? In about 3 1/2 weeks (November 14), Paul will be a daddy again (I can't believe it's so soon!), so I don't think he'd be likely to play in a show...right? If he does play at the concert, though, I would expect the band would be with him...
