How many songs has Paul written?
-
JoeySmith:
The answer is...828. 827 if you take Lennon's side of the "In My Life" debate.
Show your working!!! Or better still, list them all so we can check!

Bob Dylan wrote also more than 500 songs.
http://www.bobdylan.com/us/songs Zappa has a total of 91 albums out there.
I'm too lazy to count the songs. But apart from these official releases there are so many bootleg and unofficial songs by Bob Dylan too, so he wrote way more than in this list.

I guess he probably knows, but he don't care about, he only wants "some more" as says often...
he WANTS some more but he won't PLAY some more!
Yeah..is a paradox...

If you're wondering what a "paradox" is: Two docks. "Ba-dah-bump!" (that's for you, BOYCIE ) Anyway, James Brown claimed to had written over two thousand songs, so -- surely -- Paul has at least twice that amount. I'd bet that he has at least 100 additional gems similar to "2 Fingers."

4000 songs? That's a bit too much I guess, even for someone like Paul.

I didn't say 4,000 good songs.

Yeah, the question is, what exactly is a song? Does it have to be a "proper" song with verse, chorus, verse, middle-eight, chorus or something or does f.e. "The Lovely Linda" also count? If yes, then maybe you're right, I mean Paul can always sit down and play a tune for a half minute and improvise two lyric-lines on it and call it a song, but that's a thing nearly everyone can do who knows how to pick up a guitar. It's another thing to write a song you can put out on an album with many different instruments, lyrics and the tune itself. If you count only those then I really doubt Paul wrote more than maybe 800 or something (or he has at least hundreds of songs no one knows about written in his drawer).

I knew this question would be tough, but I didn't realize just how tough! Does ASCAP count songs with multiple versions (No More Lonely Nights, for example) as one entry since the lyrics are the same? What about the various remixes? (Yes, I still have many of the 12" vinyl extended versions.) To answer an earlier post....Yes, I would count snippets like Lovely Linda just as I would count other "unfinished" songs like from Side 2 of Abbey Road. We'd also have to count all the unreleased songs that eventually saw the light of day on reissues, like the McCartney II outtakes. But figure that Paul has been writing for over 50 years, and he used to crank them out with John at a furious pace. An average of just one song per month for 50 years would total 600, so I think 800-1000 is probably a good conservative estimate. Alan in St. Louis, USA

Seeing people count the songs they have heard Paul do in concert made me first think that I haven't updated my list in quite awhile (actually I never did it to begin with, I think Darth did it) BUT...it also made me laugh to think of how many he hasn't played live & how many he has written. I wonder if there actually is a list somewhere.

I wonder how many songs Paul has sung, including with other artists.

Hello from St. Louis in the USA! I've wondered for a long time: How prolific is Sir Paul? How many songs has he written? Must be over 1,000! I know there are 200+ Lennon-McCartney songs. Then add in the ones with Linda, Michael Jackson, Elvis Costello, Stevie Wonder, etc. and all the songs he wrote without a partner. Fine with me if you want to count the well-known Unreleased songs as well, and don't forget to include the Fireman and Oratorio ones! Has anyone done this research? Thanks, Alan
He said in the film Eight Days A Week: the Touring Years that he wrote about 300 songs with John. Adding his solo output since 1969 plus stuff he's never released must be close to 1,000. He's Mr. Music!

The ASCAP site search gives a total of 835 songs for Paul.. these include his songs with John Lennon and others. You can scroll the list here: https://www.ascap.com/repertory#ace/writer/18873266/MCCARTNEY PAUL JAMES (edited to add you'll have to copy and paste link, since there's a space after McCartney it won't go to the site correctly from here) If you need to do a manual search on the site, he's listed under Paul James McCartney for some reason, not James Paul I wanted to sort the search results by date, so we'd be able to see the newest songs he may be working on, but it looks like the dates aren't available.

I think that number is low. Especially if it includes songs that he wrote with John & also songs he wrote with others. There are about 300 that he wrote with John alone.

Were there other names he composed under? (Pseudonyms) Perhaps there's other songs listed under other names. Also, it's possible he may have a lot of songs that are just on paper at his home or studio, that he hasn't ever registered, because he hasn't recorded them, or sold them to other artists.

I should really Google and check but off the top of my head I think he wrote a song called Woman, for Peter & Gordon, under the name 'Bernard Webb'.
