Your "conversion playlist"

I've accepted a new job, and I've made a "going away" CD for a co-worker who loves The Beatles -- but, sadly, knows little of Paul's solo work. So...rather than banish Jameka from my mental-space kingdom, I have concluded that it is best to enlighten her. She is anxious to hear this CD. She knew that I'd taken a couple of days off from work for the St. Louis show, and she was excited for me. So, here's the tracklist for Conversion To McCartneyism, Vol. 1: 1-Sing The Changes [2008] 2-Oo You [1970] 3-Coming Up (Twin Freaks) [2005] 4-Getting Better (live - Back In The U.S.) [2002] 5-Golden Earth Girl [1993] 6-Cosmically Conscious (from the CD-single) [1993] 7-Darkroom [1980] 8-Big Boys Bickering [1993] 9-Pretty Little Head [1986] 10-Sun Is Shining [2008] 11-Vanilla Sky (live) [2002] 12-Jenny Wren (live, Des Moines...don't ask where I got this) [2005] 13-Goodnight Tonight (live) [1979] 14-House Of Wax (live, Paris...again...don't ask) [2007] 15-No More Lonely Nights [1984] 16-Rainclouds [1982] 17-Summer's Day Song [1980] 18-So Bad [1983] 19-Paperback Writer (live - Paul Is Live) [1993] 20-Helter Skelter (Live [2005] Damn good CD if I may say so, myself! (I'm sure that this list has many, many, many glaring omissions, but I've got two other volumes comin' for her.)

Mine would be chronological - Paul has too many songs to do this well, but I would give a sample of the early post-Beatles period 1. Every Night 2. Maybe I'm Amazed 3. Too Many People 4. Dear Boy 5. Uncle Albert/Admiral Halsey 6. Monkberry Moon Delight 7. Some People Never Know 8. Tomorrow 9. Mama's Little Girl 10. Big Barn Bed 11. My Love 12. Live and Let Die I would have included Ram On, Heart of the Country, Long Haired Lady, Backseat of my Car but I tried to stop it being too Ram heavy. wink

I've been tempted to put my own list together for a while and I finally have. Here it is (or at least the 1st draft  1. Big Barn Bed 2. Dance till we're high 3. Only Mama Knows 4. Old Siam Sir 5. The World Tonight 6. Beware my love 7. Mr. Bellamy 8. Blue Bird 9. Every Night 10. This Never Happened Before 11. Beautiful Night 12. Wanderlust 13. Back seat of my car 14. 1985 It seems many people here have been trying to compose a list of songs that they feel are Paul's "best." That's fine, but keep in mind that these playlists are supposed to be introductory... Do you really want to show a newcomer Paul's best songs from throughout his career all in one go? When I put my list together, I did so with the intention of whetting the listeners appetite and piquing his/her curiosity, that's why its so diverse. There's bound to be something in that list that will attract someone that has never been exposed to him!

OK, I purposely did not look at anyone else's playlist so my mind would be fresh. I also included little explainers for why I picked what I picked. Also tried to pick from a wide array of albums: 1. Warm and Beautiful (This is my ringtone for my hubby. This song is beautiful and heartfelt) 2. The World Tonight (this song is classic and modern at the same time) 3. Wanderlust (Just a lyrically beautiful song) 4. Temporary Secretary (This song is either a love it or hate it song -- my mom loves McCartney and did not like this song -- but it?s just so kooky that you go ?This is Paul??) 5. Press (Maybe it?s boosted by the fact that I love the video, but I just think it?s a super fun song) 6. From A Lover To A Friend (I really wanted to go with ?Rinse The Raindrops,? but I decided to stick with a tamer, yet lovely track from ?Driving Rain? since we?re talking about the average layman. That plus ?Temporary Secretary? might be too much.) 7. Arrow Through Me (This track is so smooth, and Paul sounds so smooth on it. It?s a good jumping off point that could lead into more ?Back To The Egg? tracks) 8. Listen To What The Man Said (This is my ?how can you not be happy listening to this?? track. It instantly brightens up my mood.) 9. C?Mon People/Cosmically Conscious (This track strikes me as epic musically. Also shows Paul lyrically empowering folks to make a difference in the world) 10. Tomorrow (A song that?s dear to my heart. It?s simple yet well done. It?s actually made me tear up a few times.) 11. Jet (This is not an ?off the beaten path? track at all, but this track will surely keep our layman engaged with the playlist.) 12. That Day Is Done (Not my favorite track off of ?Flowers,? but I just love the lyric ?She sprinkles flowers in the dirt/That?s what a thrill becomes a hurt.? Damn.) 13. Only Mama Knows (From the very beginning, this song does a very good job of setting the mood. And the lyrics do a good job of taking you through the story) 14. Maybe I?m Amazed (Wings Over America version) (Really, either the album or this live version will do. I just think the live version rocks a bit more. Either way, you?ve really got to include the track that really basically launched solo McCartney.)

Oh my gosh this is great! I love that you have 'So Bad!' I wanted to put that on my playlist, but a 14-track limit ain't easy to abide by!

Would everyone be happy if the limit were 15-tracks instead?

Haha we really just need a 4-disc length collection!

I converted a friend who did not know how great a singer Paul was with only one song. Maybe I'm Amazed from Wings Over America.

There's no way Paul cant be explained in 14-15 songs... Introduced maybe...I'm still hearing new songs, this far in... It's like trying to introduce someone to Picasso, by showing them 14 painting...a small tip of the iceberg!!! Would you leave out the sculptures? Focus on a specific period?

It WAS a challenge -- and a lot of fun. There's just so much good stuff to choose from! But the playlists are a good jumping off point.

Recently, I was chatting with a friend of mine who like Paul's music, but didn't particularly like his post-Beatles output. I assumed he hadn't heard much of it; however, to my surprise, he had and wasn't fond of Wings. It turns out most of what he knew of Wings were their more popular songs (top charting singles and those that got a lot of airplay back in the day). He thought of them as a very pop-centered '70s group that was essentially a McCartney backing band/vanity project. I remembered this system I came up with a while back, told him about it, and offered to come up with a "conversion list" solely of Wings songs. I further offered to reduce the list to 10 songs, make them mostly obscure songs, and have them show the group's variety. Here's the list I sent him: 1. Big Barn Bed 2. Bluebird 3. Arrow Through Me 4. Wino Junko 5. Letting Go 6. Time to Hide 7. Old Siam Sir 8. Beware My Love 9. Dear Friend 10. Nineteen Hundred and Eighty Five I'm happy to report that, after hearing the full list, he has now drastically reconsidered his opinion of the group and is now a fan!

Mr. Spock:
There may already be a thread to this effect, and please PM me if you find it, but I wanted to give this idea a try anyway... I'm sure many of you have had that experience, as McCartney fans, where you run into someone (or more) who knows little to nothing of Paul's career past the Beatles. To be honest, I get a lot of people who ask "isn't that the one who was shot?" : ops: Obviously this raises the issue of a vast amount of the populous that is culturally deprived by not having being exposed to the best of Paul's post-Beatles work. We must do something about this! Anyway, I thought it would be interesting if we used this thread to do just that. In essence, if you had to pick about 12-14 songs from all of Paul's post-Beatles career that could make the case for why he is extremely relevant (both historically and currently) as an artist, which songs would you choose? Think of your list as more of a playlist than another "greatest hits/fan favorites" album. I recommend choosing songs that are high in quality (i.e. hidden album gems) than the outright famous ones, but its totally up to you. Remember: you have to pick 12-14 songs that can convert the average layman into "McCartneyism"
- Take It Away 2) Tug Of War 3) House of Wax 4) Dance Til We're High 5) How Kind Of You 6) About You 7) We Got Married Little Willow 9) Run Devil Run 10) Soily 11) Angry 12) Maybe I'm Amazed 13) Too Much Rain 14) Flying To My Home

For people who aren't that fond of Wings based on only knowing the hit "singles" that were played to death on the radio (Silly Love Songs, Let them In, Listen What the Man Said, Live and Let Die, Jet etc.) I would "first" get them to listen to Wings Over America. This remaster CD would give them a much better feel for how good of a Band Wings were, how good the non-singles were and how this band could rock. At that point, people not too enthusiastic about Paul's Post Beatles songs might be energized to discover more on their own. Just listening to songs like Letting Go, Beware My Love, Call Me Back Again, Rock Show, Let Me Roll It To You etc. might change their minds in a hurry. Even the "hits" on Wings Over America sound better in most cases.
