Sorry, kapoo, this is where I have to draw the line #1 I hate rap music #2 I don't like jazz music. The only rap song I actually like is Stan by Eminem w/Dido http://www.bing.com/videos/search?q=stan+by+eminem&FORM=VIRE3#view=detail&mid=CB131798C16130C4D445CB131798C16130C4D445

What she said...except for the Jazz part. And the word "hate." I would say intensely dislike, but I too was impressed by a song by Eminem did called My Name Is Slim Shady.

Okay, I "intensely dislike" it too! I kind of like the Slim Shady song as well.

We had a thread a while back...Laws did some mashups or singing with Paul. And THAT is the only reason it's any good. imo. LOVE the song choices... Check this out... Mr Bellamy
Momma Miss America Dear Boy -
I think the US has (overall) produced better solo artists, and the UK has produced better bands. Jmo

You just may be right about that.

The Eagles, based on album sales, hit singles and drugs taken. The Eagles, based on iconic albums. Of Thriller, Dark Side of the Moon, Rumours, and Hotel California, only one was from an American band.

Momma Miss America Dear BoyI appreciate the tracks, but Laws' voice grates my nerves. Still, I knew that one day someone would loop "Momma Miss America" for a hip-hop track!

I always preferred Steely Dan to the Eagles by far. I'd accord the former that illustrious title "The American Beatles" before I would the Eagles.
-
Well, duh...obviously the Beach Boys (their more esoteric non-beach boy/beach bunny fare)...I sure can be obtuse...Brian Wilson hailed as quite the musical genius and all that...if Steely Dan had been more prolific they'd have had more of a shot at the glorious comparison. I still think

If there is a band that is American that compares at all with The Beatles, it would be The Beach Boys. I believe there is nothing in the Universe like The Beatles. Unless it is indeed out of this world and I have not heard the band yet.

Yeah, "The Cockroaches" from Mars I believe.

Some say Steely Dan was "the American Beatles." Steely Dan is undeniably excellent and unique, but is the band THAT good? They're fantastic. The title might possibly fit. Which group would you think qualifies for that moniker? The Eagles achieved great stature and status. They might be a tad "hickified" in other words too country or laid back country rock to be the U.S. Beatles--the Welcome to the Hotel California album was iconic, though, their album with that and "Life in the Fast Lane" etc. on it. Their work might lack the striking diversity of the Beatles' songs.
Without a doubt IMO it was the "Beach Boys" with Brian Wilson being a songwriter in the same league as Lennon/McCartney.

People have mentioned bands and artists with the same popularity and influence as the Beatles, but I'm fascinated by bands that clearly model themselves after them but aren't necessarily popular. Someone mentioned the Shoes, but I would add Uncle Green, the Spongetones, and Cotton Mather. The Spongetones' album "Oh Yeah" is so Beatlesque it's ridiculous. I love it. And in the nineties there was even a one-off album by two guys calling themselves the Nerk Twins that was quite good.
And I know this may nauseate some people, but for me the American Beatles, as far as influence (certainly not style), would probably be R.E.M. -
When the Byrds toured England in 1965, they were called America's answer to The Beatles. London was referenced, lyrically, in their 1966 song, "Eight Miles High."
-
The Monkees were the American Beatles..didn't matter that they didn't write their own songs they captured the spirit of the Beatles in the TV series and they had energy to the early to mid 60's Beatles. Artistically The Beach Boys were the most innovative but that was mostly Brian Wilson. And heres my theory America produces the greatest solo artists and the rest of the World particularly Britain produce the best bands.
-
Because of the Vietnam War & the draft a lot of good American bands didn't last. The Byrds best songs were written by Bob Dylan. They probably were the greatest reason he plugged in ... And they didn't vary their song style enough to last for a long run ...
-
As far as the 1960's is concerned, in my opinion, it was either THE BEACH BOYS or THE BYRDS!

When the Byrds did switch gears, with Sweetheart Of The Rodeo, it didn't really help either, though it is quite a good album.
