I said it was "one of the best songs on the album" my dear! Not "extraordinary."At least we agree about Maybe I'm Amazed (my favorite Paul solo song) and Wanderlust. Anywho, some of us just dig the hell out of I Can Bet but we also "Appreciate" (pun intended) the deeper and more emotional songs like Scared etc. P.S. Sometimes I just like musical cotton candy! ("turn off your mind and relax and float downstream")
Some of Paul's best stuff is what the critics describe as the equivalent of 'cotton candy' (edit - Bruce's terminology).... a good term, by the way... Silly Love Songs and Goodnight Tonight.... which the critics lament are so 'poppy' are in my favourite McCartney (post-Beatles) songs.... probably in my top ten of his.... I love them... And I Can Bet, whilst not breathing the same atmosphere, but is somewhere sniffing at the horizon, is a great feel-good song. ps. Maybe I'm Amazed is the quintessential song. The original McCartney album version. Just magnificent. Why it wasn't released as a single (until the live Wings Over America version) is one of the greatest wonders of the universe. Monumental.
People on this forum are well aware that Silly Love Songs is the farthest thing in the world from musical cotton candy, despite some inane critics' reactions. It's musically quite complex, while the lyrics have fun with Paul's image. Silly Love Songs is light-years more interesting than I Can Bet.

Yep, I recall this was a satirical nod/rebuttal to the critics lambasting him for writing too many silly love songs.... cheeky, clever and satirical... although the new-age critics seem to have forgotten this and reference it every time they want to poke fun at the McCartney 'poppness'.... Just a brilliant song. Makes me wish I could play a bass guitar.

Bruce, what is wrong with you? I Can Bet is one of the best songs on the album! Makes me want to dance & sing it! (kind of like The Beatles' You Can't Do That) Does every song have to have 'deep emotional resonance' for you? I know, you'll say 'No' but I Can Bet is such a damn good song!
Agree!

A big Paul basher on a facebook Beatles page declared that McCartney has "always been a Justin Bieber type" Can you imagine the bloody cheek ! As if that's all Paul ever was, a teenybopper idol and this offender went on to claim Paul's "feminine features" attracted the hordes of screamers. He said Paul has "300 bad songs" This guy threatened to come in here and bash Paul. He'll just be regarded as a troll if he does I sure hope he doesn't come here, I'll be forced to fight

The live version is arguably the better version. The original also came out at the same time as Let It Be so he would have been competing with himself as it were.

That's interesting about the timing of Let It Be / McCartney, and Paul not releasing a single. although when did Another Day come out? and didn't John have Cold Turkey out, and possibly Instant Karma while those albums were out? need to research that timeline, I love that kind of shit and plus not having been around its always piecing the flow of releases together for me! a la http://maccaboard.paulmccartney.com/phpBB2/viewtopic.php?t=73569&start=0 yeah I love I Can Bet! what paul does best is make those pure pop songs, I love the ones hes done almost better than anything! he's just the best at it. and he doesn't always go cheese, in fact rarely. and especially rarely any more. he just lays it down.

I always find myself singing 'I Confess' when singing along to this track for some strange reason.
