"White Album" - what are the best things about it?

I pretty much remember everything from around 4 years on.

Memory is a matter of personal perception. (selective memory) It's 2014 A.D. and some of you are still sleeping

When I was very young my brother used to lock me in a dark closet with a speaker against the door playing Revolution 9. If the state department is looking for new torture methods I can recommend this as being pretty effective. It scared the living sh*t out of me. Take this brother may it serve you well.
Hi DM! Yikes! First of all sorry to hear about this! I had to smile for a second when I read this due to the sheer sinister creativity of it Yet you are still a Beatles fan! What was the scariest part of Revolution 9 going through that?? Just off the news wire: The Pentagon just placed a very large order for the Beatles White Album through Amazon this morning!
Oh, I'm not upset about it now. I have three older brothers so this was much preferred to physical torture. And the part I hated the most was the "number nine" repeated over and over. So creepy! The only lasting effect has been that it took about 30+ years for me to willingly listen to it all the way through again. I reminded my brother about this torture recently and he laughed and thought it was pretty creative. He said if he was really mean he would have played a Yoko song.

How's this for controversy? Lennon thought Yoko was a genius and her music was just as inspired and relevant as The Beatles. With the passage of time of course, hindsight may prove him correct. Her work has already been reevaluated in a positive light. I say these things knowing people here will attack. Because the way she is treated on this website is truly appalling, and it continues year after year. It continues even though Paul has reevaluated his opinion of her. Don't people understand that she continues John's and her work with Imagine Peace? To me that's better that imagining hate and war. And she's done a fantastic job of handling John's legacy. She's a great lady.

Just because I think her singing voice is awful doesn't mean I think she's a bad person. I think this is a bit too much for what I was talking about.

Exactly. The McCartney Board is also an attack Yoko forum. All the Yoko attackers sound as if they're stuck in 1969. Sad really. She was an established and influential artist in her own right BEFORE 1966.

I'm not stuck in 1969. I don't rate her art or her music. Never have, never will. Did she break up The Beatles? No. Did John love her? No doubt. Still don't rate her. Do I rate Andy Warhol? No. Do I rate McCartney as an artist (in terms of his paintings)? No. Plenty of art and artists I don't rate and she's one of them. As for her personally, I can only go by her public persona, actions and behaviour and I warm to very little of that. I just don't find her likeable. Nothing "sad" about that. And funnily enough, I don't find McCartney to be very likeable either. But that's another story.
-
I am aware that her art and music is not everybody's cup of tea, many on this board have made that plain, and yet continually pot her to the extreme. We get some have no time for her, but to read in every second post that she is personally derided, insulted or ridiculed is tiring. At least continually targeting her is. That aspect is sad. It is the McCartney board after all. Shouldn't we all be glowing with our praise for Paul?

This is an interesting topic to me. Please correct me if I am mistaken because I am fairly new here. It's not necessary for us to be glowing in our praise for Paul here, right? I'd say that if glowing praise is warranted (and yes, there IS so so much to glow about!) then that is the appropriate response but if someone feels the opposite way, in particular about a song, album, whatever, then they would be able to express that feeling, however unpopular it would be, am I correct? To me you just have to keep it real or else the totally positive comments would be meaningless...they would almost be required. Not that constant or heavy-handed bashing would be a good idea at all and I'm sure would not be permitted here. I am not familiar with Yoko as a person or artist really...her singing turned me off enough to not want to explore further but perhaps I was rash in my decision to stay away. I've never been avante-garde, don't care for modern art, I'm more mainstream. I've got to snap out of it and expand my horizons!

This is getting off-topic, but I don't think that statement is accurate as first of all it's against the forum rules and controlled by the moderators here. You and I both know that the large majority of Beatles fans do not like Yoko for a number of reasons (I don't care what John thought of her, John had a lot of whacked out ideas on things) based on the assessment of her "work" not the least of which is that most feel she's a charlatan artist/singer--then there's the personality issue. If she didn't hook up with Lennon no one here would even know her name and she would still be trying to hand out little cards with cutsie messages like "Sit on a cloud" to passers by--the only problem is that that doesn't cut it any more.

How so are any critics of Yoko "stuck in 1969?"
moptops:

Established and influential? Those are relative terms--in this case extremely relative. I suppose if you think putting the word "Yes" on the ceiling so you have to climb a ladder to see it is as art then she was established. A photo of a glass half filled with water...brilliant! Bear in mind that back in the 60s any Tom, Dick, or Harry that hung their shingle outside a shop that said "artist" was an established artist. Some avant-garde paintings were made (and commanded high prices depending on who did the work) by throwing paint soaked sponges at a canvas ("heavy man!"). Excuse me for not buying into this crap as art. And handing out little cards to passers by with "deep" messages, pounding imaginary nails into a piece of wood. John was a quack when it came to his "assessment" that Yoko was some sort of genius rivalling the Beatles and he should have been called out on it--if he'd lived he would have had a heck of a lot more defending of her "work" to do and it would have been an uphill battle. In fact I believe they would have been divorced by now had John lived. Need more proof? She once had the audacity to plan a world tour. It had to be cancelled due to extremely disappointing ticket sales. So it's not just the members of the PM forum that are of this mindset, it's most of the world.

I think Yoko Ono is extremely creative and I really dare any of us here to show some creativity! Where is our fabulous creativity? I am not as artistic and creative as Yoko, and if someone here is then please forward me your out of this world Artistic Abilities? It is certainly easy to sit around and criticize someone when you have no artistic ability of your own. I guess it is a matter of taste if you dig Yoko or not. But to say she is not creative is simply untrue. Here is the Imagine Peacetower and I'd like one of us top it: http://imaginepeacetower.com/light-house

Thanks Erik, My post began by me acknowledging her art and music is not everyone's cup of tea. I happen to like much of her music. And yes, she was an established and influential artist before 1966. Not to your taste, much of it not to mine either, but she was. She still is today. Personally, I couldn't care less if people like her stuff or not. It's the constant personal attacks of her on the board by various repeat posters who seem to enjoy holding her to ridicule and insult that I find slightly distasteful. You are right though, the mods don't seem to give two hoots, so what the hell do I know? R

Isn't that just a copy of the "Tribute in Light" that was done as a memorial for the two lost World Trade towers? http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Tribute_in_Light

No it is not a copy of the Tribute. If you become more familiar with the Imagine Peace Tower is not just a beam of light. Geothermal energy powers the light. Nature powers the Imagine Peace Tower. Read more about it. I don't have time to go into it all as I am leaving town right now. Also Yoko's work in NYC in Strawberry Fields. All for John's memory. I know that a woman that devotes her life's work to the memory of a man named John Lennon is a good apple in my book. I could only hope to be loved so much in death that someone keeps my memory alive as Yoko has done for John. http://imaginepeace.com/projects/strawberryfields and geothermal power: http://imaginepeacetower.com/power I am not going to defend Yoko to people who only want to bring her down. She does not care what people think about her. So I am not going to fret over it all. I guess if people expanded their minds they might understand what she does with her creations, what they represent. I get it. As John and Yoko said, "Think!" Peace & Love!
-
Well regardless of the power source it's hardly an original idea is it? It was done years earlier to greater effect in NYC to remember the lost World Trade towers.

Mod Post We kindly request that members please return to topic. As to this:
moptops:
the mods don't seem to give two hoots
The moderators of this message board most certainly do indeed "give two hoots" and have removed countless attacks on Yoko and various elements of arguments in regard to Yoko. The moderators have no way of preventing members from attacking Yoko and/or arguing about Yoko, we can only remove an attack and various elements of an argument which are in violation of our forum guidelines. Members are entitled to their opinion of Yoko's work. It is acceptable to indicate that one does not care for a song of Yoko's or like a selection of her art. It is not acceptable to personally attack Yoko or for members to personally attack one another during an argument in regard to her. Yoko is and has always been a controversial figure within The Beatles family past and present. Emotions tend to run high in either direction where Yoko is concerned. The moderators at this message board are not in possession of special powers that enable them to ensure that members will be respectful and employ common sense, all we can do is request such and make removals when such request is denied and in violation of our forum guidelines. All members of the moderating team are available via our private message system. If one sees a post that they believe is in violation of our forum guidelines where Yoko or anyone is concerned, please contact me or any member of the moderating team via private message. We will have a look at the post in question and take action where necessary. Thank you.

I think some of us should search out "The Beatles Anthology...1993, Directors Cut". There are a lot of opinions that were cut out but they are on this set.
-
Here's what George Martin had to say: "Yoko's thoughts were impinging on us--even if they weren't spoken." So what about that White Album, huh? My favorite song was I Will.
-
I love what Paul said in response to what if...blah blah... "It's the bloody Beatles White Album...shut up."
-
I love "I Will"!!!!! Carrying on in a different vein.... I was about 12 years old when the White Album was released and I am ashamed to admit that at first I did buy into the "Paul is dead" nonsense (I know, I know, it was foolish on my part!) based on various clues on this album. I remember thinking at the time...if he's not dead then why doesn't he just show himself in a photo holding up a newspaper with the current date on it like POW's do or else appear on the Mick Cavett Show (had to mention this show - I loved it back then. Just replace the "M' with a "D" folks......wow, that's pretty funny)? Maybe he did and I missed it somehow. So then, did The Beatles try to play along with the whole Paul Is Dead thing for fun, but just did not initiate it? I'll admit, I should have been wiser than to believe crazy stuff like this but I have to blame it on the radio DJs back then....they completely tried to brainwash us kids with all kinds of propaganda just to get good ratings I guess. I know that many of you longtime fans are tired of this topic from so much discussion over the years but please just humor me as I'm new to this and it's an important part of discussing this album....did anyone beside me believe this death theory back then or am I the only fool on the hill? Note: Because of my hospital background I have consciously chosen not to use PID as it's a medical code for pelvic inflammatory disease. ops:
