'Early Days'
-
I said this on an earlier thread but I have to say (for the time being anyway) Early Days is my favorite on the NEW album....it's beautiful and haunting and real. I find myself listening to it on repeat...there's one line i cannot get past though. I haven't read everything out there, but I'd venture to say, Paul has stayed largely above the fray and stayed truly classy about some of the dirt that has been kicked around about his role in the Beatles. Never really responded to such critics who dismissed Paul as being the cute, poppy shallow writer while John was the true musical creative genius...until now. Paul gives a subtle (or not so subtle) dig delivered brilliantly in the song: Now everybody seems to have their own opinion Who did this and who did that But as for me I don't see how they can remember When they weren't where it was at I love this line. It seems Paul is finally done dealing with ignorant critics who blindly worship Lennon while dismissing Paul for his great contributions to the band. OF COURSE, I could be reading way too much into this. Maybe so. But it's clear Paul is talking to someone in this song. And I for one applaud him for it.

I love "Early Days", too. I love the lyrics (mostly) and I think the vocal is very effective for this song at this point in Paul's life. But, I must admit that I find the line "when they were not where it was at" incredibly awkward! Other than that one little line, a great song.

Well, yeah, grammatically speaking it's a terrible line! But what it conveys is quite powerful.

Very mild rejoinder, really. He could have been a lot more insistent and even a bit scathing considering he had to hear all that about Lennon the genius and he the frivolous pop star, for so long.

Some have said that line is about the new book out there...Tune In. Did Paul endorse anything Mark L wrote? Any of Paul's family?

I agree with you here and that was my first opinion of the song the first time I heard it. I'm sick of people giving Lennon all the credit (and I love Lennon) while dismissing Paul as fluff. Paul could tune his own guitar first! Also, I'm sick of people who think that Paul and John hated each other from the beginning. They were teens. teens wouldn't stick together if they hated each other like that. one thing I do love about J/P slashers, they at least understand the merits of both men to the group.

Paul answered a couple questions via email that Mark submitted (Mark worked for MPL for something like 15 years!) Not sure about his family, I'd have to check & I'm half dead right now from sciatica pain--gotta take more meds and go back to bed!

just was posting about a Get Back/I Can Bet similarity in the other thread and thought of this one. I hear a similarity between Dance Tonight and Early Days. you can almost sing one over the other.

There are only so many notes and chords. If someone writes enough songs, similarities will crop up from time to time. No biggie.

The main similarity for me between Early Days & a Beatles song would be lyrically with Paul's main contribution to A Day In The Life.

We know that Paul shot a video for this song not long ago, but now that he has this "Save Us" video competition going, I'm starting to wonder if the "Early Days" video is going to end up being used in concert, maybe just in the background on the screen while he performs the song, IF he plays the song. Just a thought. What do people think?

I think speculation is a waste of time. We'll know when they release something and/or Paul's next run of concerts starts (very soon now).

It was rehearsed, so it may either be a soundcheck performance or part of the show.

I thought this forum was all about speculation! (Here we go disagreeing again.) I just find it unlikely that he's planning TWO more videos for mass consumption on YouTube at this point.

oh yes indeed. that would be hard for Paul as he is very eloquent in his print and in his voice. well he could have said: hehe! "When they were not where we was at "? too? most of Paul's friends would say, awe! it's ok, forget about it! it's cool!

I'm sure he did this on purpose, knowing it's technically incorrect, but he's making a reference to the sixties phrase "where it's at," meaning "hip" or "cool"... while at the same time saying that some people who claim they know what happened in his life simply weren't actually there. So, a double meaning: these so-called experts either weren't physically there at the time, or if they were, they weren't cool or hip (i.e., older generations who said the Beatles would never last), so their opinions aren't valuable, because Paul has proven them wrong by enduring, and so has the Beatles' music.
