So Sgt. Pepper Took You By Surprise?

^^ no way. I don't mean Sgt. Pepper in John's reference. I mean Sergeant Pepper himself.
Clear as mud.

Yes, thank you for clearing that up Kittay!

Perhaps you would deign to explain it to the rest of the class then?

If I remember correctly, the assumption is that he is referencing LSD. Sgt Pepper being the psychedelic album was used to refer to LSD. And I think Paul said that one time when they were both tripping they just stared into each others eyes and they saw themselves in the other's eyes. Or something like that. I think I read it in Barry Miles' book Many years From Now.
I thought this too. that it was an LSD reference. Paul resisted taking it and then right after he did, he ran to the press creating that controversy of admitting it. I also thought the line about freaks thinking he was dead was about it too. That the only change in Paul was the person he became after acid. I wondered about that 'mother's eye' line too though the one, "Jump when your mama tells you anything" was about Linda and very very ironic.

I think this is all "Much Ado About Nothing." Really. Why doesn't someone just come up with a "Let's Bash John Lennon" thread? (No offense to the author.) I happen to love John and find it all so sad that some still find ways to belittle him in death, and he has no way to defend himself except by people like me. If you are really intelligent you can go on youtube and find an interview where he explains how he felt about the song in retrospect. How John says he felt not only was he writing it at the time about Paul, but as he was older he realizes he was also writing it about himself too. I went to find it but got distracted. Has anyone ever been pissed at their best friend and had a falling out? Yes. I have many times, I just never wrote a song about it. Peace Out!
It's not just bashing John. It's trying to figure out what he meant when he bashed paul. He spoke in riddles there

What I am saying is that there was no intrinsic reason that Paul was able to amass more wealth than John. Whether it was his (John's) choice of domicile, producing less albums, touring less, whatever, they were essentially on equal footing after their exit from the Beatles. What they did or didn't do with their money and careers was essentially their own choice. Yoko may have managed their money, but she was no shrewd money manager and this was born out by the dire financial situation they ironically found themselves in. Had John not been shot in 1980 that situation may have continued for some time.
Actually, no. You just contradicted yourself by listing a bunch of circumstances that could have (and likely did) dramatically affect John's financial situation that had zero to do with Yoko's management of their finances. Some people really will find any excuse to bash Yoko. It's just sad.
I have wondered for a few years now, what exactly it is that women and men find so scary about Yoko? I came to the conclusion that some men are intimidated by her no nonsense attitude and can't handle it. And some women are jealous they cannot be in control of their lives as Yoko was and still is to this day. A long time ago I came to believe if Yoko had been a blonde, blue-eyed woman she would not have been so disrespected then and now. Some people are afraid of what they can't understand, or what they do not physically resemble. I also noticed that when it is getting old on a thread bashing John, people will bash his widow. That is very sad indeed. jmo.
Linda was a natural blond and she got bashed pretty badly too

First I am not referring to any person in particular on this board or anywhere when I say that "some people" don't like Yoko Ono Lennon. I just wonder do they have a real reason to NOT like her? As in their own personal reasons? Not some cooked up P.R. crap that she broke up the Beatles, hoodwinked John. Or the true fact she was from Japan when WW2 was fresh in the minds of western countries in the 1960's. If someone really intensely dislikes another person, especially a person they have never met, ask yourself WHY do I really dislike this person? I bet most can't even come up with a valid reason. How can you dislike a person you never ever met on this planet? So for the financial advice I see here: could you manage money better and what does your portfolio look like? I see we are judging people we don't know. And as I have learned that is a dangerous thing to do in this world.
Tony Bramwell's book will make you hate her. You find that she and John carried on a secret affair way way before they claimed they did tony and her husband tony and Kyoko in one room while John and Yoko messed around in the other.
-
^^ I understand that you are saying. I am just saying until Yoko Ono pisses me off in person, I will not dislike her. I just came to the place in my life where I dislike no one until they personally hurt me. And I do not read books written by people who are only out to make money off the private lives of others. I just won't read any of it. They all have an agenda, to make money. *The Beatles wrote most of their later songs as riddles. Has anyone thought about the lyrics to Penny Lane and what they mean? I just have recently. Why does the barber shave another customer all the time? There is a double meaning there. As in most of the lyrics to that song. But one has to dis-cover it themselves, I love it.

I'll really go out on a limb here and try to answer that one. Ummmm, could it be because beards continually grow? The song is not rife with double entendres...he did slip in the line about "four of fish and finger pies" but most of it is sort of a Paul lyrical painting of his memories of Penny Lane as a teenager. Sorry I don't see a riddle in it at all and you still haven't explained the Sgt. Pepper comment that no one, but Steven claims to understand (and won't explain).

Why is the, "pretty nurse selling poppies from a tray?" It all became quite clear to me yesterday. The whole song. Yes, it is about Penny Lane. It has more meaning to it. I love it even more now than ever! *oh, the number 4? * Some things you just have to see 4 yourself.

When Corpernicus and Galileo promoted the idea that the earth was round and not the center of the universe...the flat earthians and the self oriented survivalists thought that they were insane...and now...it is a common given fact backmask the word....walrus...study the prefix...sur...the concept of law...and the concept of love...and get back to me in the next 72 hours

How refreshing: a riddle answered with another riddle. No need for us to study the entomology of the word "walrus" as Lennon didn't put any more thought into it than mixing up the characters in Lewis Carroll's poem--had he done his homework the song might have been called "I Am The Carpenter" though this obviously doesn't sound as good.

Common enough image. Plastic poppies are sold on streets to raise money for veterans especially around holidays where they are honored and remembered.

dissecting lyrics to Beatles songs while high is pretty dangerous.

This is the second time you have introduced the round vs. flat earth debate and I'm sorry but I don't see what relevance it has to this thread. As an interesting aside, you do know that this debate coined the term "revolution" don't you? I doubt Lennon knew that. Your second paragraph makes no sense to me especially since "backmask" is not a word. It would be a lot easier if you were just to simply post the point you are attempting to make. BTW, please see my post at the bottom of the prior page.

you di-sect and pick things apart under the influence of alcohol...ask any battered woman when you are high...you are more likely to think broadly and deeply and objectively about things...ask anyone who has ever promoted love and understanding as a political solution
