So Sgt. Pepper Took You By Surprise?

You all know the first line from John's scathing lyrical attack on Paul in his song "How Do You Sleep?" Since John referred to Sgt. Pepper as "Paul's album" why would it have taken Paul by surprise? Wouldn't it have opened John's eyes as to what Paul could really do? I've never really understood that first line. What's your take? I understand that George played on HDYS which I thought was nasty too. Any inside info on this? Was Ringo approached too? I read that even Allen Klein got in the act by writing the lyric "And since you're gone you're just Another Day". John had written something like "You probably pinched that bitch anyway." An ironic line being John got sued over Come Together and George got sued over My Sweet Lord. Thoughts/comments on this?
Here's 7 minutes video of the recording of HDYS, with John showing off to George, and you hear John call it "the nasty one".

George Martin is terrific.... but nah.... I can't buy that one. Gotta go with the songwriter first, every time.

Klaus was there too. I had forgotten that he was involved. And what a young Phil Spector! I have this on DVD but haven't seen it in years. Thanks Eeee Cor Blimey.

At the time John died in 1980 he was estimated to be worth $150-200 million dollars. His estate is currently worth $800 million dollars. Nothing was ever donated because they needed the money. His estate still makes more than $20 million dollars a year, including his Beatles and Apple earnings.
The Rolls in question was donated to a museum to offset a tax liability. Do you have a reputable source (and no I don't consider the NY Post a reputable source) for those figures because they seem to be wildly inflated to me. The Dakota suite probably represents a fair chunk of the value of their estate, but that had little of nothing to do with Yoko's "shrewd" investment savvy and more to do with NYC real-estate prices spiraling out of control. Paul has probably done more for the current value of their estate than anyone.

First I am not referring to any person in particular on this board or anywhere when I say that "some people" don't like Yoko Ono Lennon. I just wonder do they have a real reason to NOT like her? As in their own personal reasons? Not some cooked up P.R. crap that she broke up the Beatles, hoodwinked John. Or the true fact she was from Japan when WW2 was fresh in the minds of western countries in the 1960's. If someone really intensely dislikes another person, especially a person they have never met, ask yourself WHY do I really dislike this person? I bet most can't even come up with a valid reason. How can you dislike a person you never ever met on this planet? So for the financial advice I see here: could you manage money better and what does your portfolio look like? I see we are judging people we don't know. And as I have learned that is a dangerous thing to do in this world.

hey_kittay, Despite the fact that you seem as though you are a kind and caring person I must state that I feel that it could be taken as a bit naive to believe that one cannot form an opinion, good or bad, of someone they have never met especially if that person is in the public eye--after all how many of us here can like the Beatles if your thesis is correct? I'm not going to pretend that part of the reason I don't dislike YO is because I have always found her rather disagreeable; however, I'd like to believe I could get past that no matter how superficial that may make me seem to you. In the grander scheme of things, my opinion is formed based on her actions and influences on John (and I certainly feel that he's to blame for this too!). Without getting into specifics, it's these actions that I dislike the most and I feel that I am well justified in my position based on all the available evidence. And I'd be happy to show you my "portfolio" whenever you'd like--it's grown quite large over the years
-
I was going to say the same thing--how can you say you like Paul and/or the Beatles if you've never met them? Obviously, we form our opinions by what we see in video and in print. That should be a valid enough reason to like or dislike someone.

^^ That is cool. I could see this one was going to be posted. I just think positive vibes are better than negative vibes. I like to feel good vibes towards a person and if I am wrong I learn they are not so wonderful people in the end. Or either I just avoid that person in real life, or don't discuss it. I don't see how negative feelings are helpful. Or rehashing old arguments about John who is dead and his wife is a nice thing to do. You all can keep on disrespecting the dead all you want. I really feel it is what is going on here. So I will leave the negative vibes behind, and you all enjoy yourselves. I won't perpetuate this conversation or ruin it all for you.

Got it, but what did it mean in the context of the song? Remember it was written ("the nasty one") as a way to slam to Paul...

LOOK at Sgt. Pepper. It is right there. I am not going to elaborate.

Oh please do, because I have no idea what you are talking about!

No problem Erik, happy to help There's so much stuff out there you'd be interested in But btw it's not on the 1988 "imagine : john lennon" linked above, it's from " Gimme Some Truth: The Making of John Lennon's Imagine Album" which is a different dvd (and much better!)
here's part 1, if you want to see the rest click on his username and it'll show the others.
