Video Game Music: "Destiny"

eric in boise:
ITunes now has a soundtrack for Destiny for $9.99, running a little under 2.5 hrs. It doesn't appear to contain Hope...
Well that sucks!

Well that sucks!
I wonder why?

Maybe they want to make a big splash when they release the single, who knows? The soundtrack has 44 tracks! Looks like it's over two hours long. $9.99 is a good price for that. Amazon doesn't have it. Paul's name is on the cover art, but none of the customer reviews in iTunes so far even mentions him. There seem to be many fans of the other composers of the project. I wonder if there will ever be a physical version of this album. The composers' soundtracks for the "Halo" games are available on CD.

FYI: iTunes has raised their price to $14.99, while Amazon now has the same thing for only $8.99.

And the soundtrack has debuted on the Billboard album chart at #101.

Thanks for the price check!

I have to say, the more I listen to this song, the more I like it.
-
Well, Hope they release it soon or people forget it about song.
-
This song sounds better and better every time I hear it.
-
Guess they must be trying to plan on an opportune time to release it, so they can also focus on promoting the various reissues coming, plus the tribute project. I did get the soundtrack of this through Amazon. Pretty much what you'd expect from a sort of science fiction soundtrack, and it's not clear to me after one listen (it's over two hours long!) which parts Paul wrote. But it is clear that most of the buyers are fans of the other composers' earlier work, because I didn't see any customer reviews mentioning Paul at all.

In Paul's Twitter Q&A, when asked if he would do the song "Hope" live, he said "HOPEfully." Kind of hard to imagine Wix handling all that orchestral stuff, so I guess it would be somewhat altered in the arrangement. Also, in the latest official email, there was another mention that this song will be released before the end of the year.
-
I really hope he'll do it live. Wix is pretty talented at what he does - A Day In the Life, Lovely Rita, Mr Kite, etc. I'm sure he could pull it off! -Rubber Soul13

'Debuted' at BBC Radio 2 this afternoon. So the single edit of 'Hope' (announced as that) loses 1 bar of the intro and the 'atmosphere' sounds before that, then loses 4o seconds consisting the whole second verse including pre-chorus ("from out of the darkness") and goes straight from the first pre-chorus ("we would build bridges") into what you could describe as the chorus ("hope for the future, it's coming soon enough"). Then, and now it's getting interesting, after the solo, during the breakdown, the radio edit doesn't have the "some hope for the future, some wait for the call, to say that our destiny will be the best of all"-verse but the earlier scrapped "from out of the darkness"-lines! But when the rhythm section comes back, that's after half a verse, 2 lines, it's corresponding again, with "and we will build bridges, up to the sky". Then the radio edit of course doesn't have the bits at the end, which might be a crossfade from the game anyway. The soundtrack version clocks in at around 3:55-4:00 (depends on which part you count as the song, and not the potential crossfade from the soundtrack), the radio edit is 3:07.

Thanks for that great analysis! I guess they've really put some thought into this thing as a single. I do "hope" they put out both versions, because the unedited one is not even available on the soundtrack album at all. Just checked iTunes US and it's not there.

I've poked around a few music industry sites and see no sign of it being out yet as a U.S. single, either for radio or as a commercial download. Has anyone heard anything definitive about plans for this side of the pond?
-
Nothing yet.

From last week's newsletter: "This week BBC Radio2 had the first radio play of Paul's song 'Hope' taken from the game 'Destiny'. There's going to be more info about this song in November so keep your eyes peeled!"

O_O eyes peeled and waiting...
