Day Tripper and Paperback Writer
-
I've always liked these two songs. Ringo's drumming on them is completely awesome. I don't know which I like best! Maybe you guys can put a vote onto this?
-
DAYTRIPPER is better. It has more of an edge, and is more rocking. Having said that, PAPERBACK WRITER is a brilliant slice of heavy pop!
-
I like the layering of the guitars in Day Tripper.

I like the layering of the guitars in Day Tripper.
Me too. It would sound super terrific if remixed so the George/John layering really stood out. And the vocals came out of the center of the mix. I think the mixing on "Paperback Writer" is better. It was rather futuristic for its time....the echoing.

Seems lke Day Tripper is getting large votes. Lets see who else here will put a vote on these two songs.

Day Tripper for me!
-
I'll be the odd woman out. Paperback Writer, for me.
-
Both are brilliant, and worldwide number ones. But Paperback Writer is a little more complex in musical structure and lyrics for me. Just a little more edgy. Gotta go with PW!
-
DAY TRIPPER is actually more musically complex. Yes, PW has the harmonies on the chorus, but DT has five chords, whereas PW has two chords. Both have soaring choruses. I would argue DT is a direct influence on PW.
-
Day Tripper has the killer guitar riff. As Lennon said, PW is the son of DT. PW is the 1st of Paul's great story songs. Cant beat the harmonies. And combined with Rain, is the group's third best single of all-time, imo. Slight edge to DT though because of the riff.

The Troggs had also released LOVE IS ALL AROUND and WILD THING in and about this period of time... Which reminds me of... Shapes Of Things To Come ~ The Yardbirds
"Will Time Make Man More Wise?" I would have to say...Paperback Writer because of it's more upbeat energy. -
John said that Paperback Writer was "son of Day Tripper " I love them both, but Day Tripper is one of my absolute favourite beatles songs, top three I reckon.
-
Love Paperback Writer... So creative and ahead of it's time
-
Day Tripper - one of the best opening guitar riffs ever!

A bit academic, this one: http://www.recmusicbeatles.com/public/files/awp/dt.1.html But I just couldn't resist. Says nowt about Ray Charles, though. Pity, that. I think I'll go have a listen to BLUESBREAKERS...but in the meantime I would have to say Paperback Writer was a much better song. Paul wanted a better bass sound, so they used a speaker placed in front of his amplifier...as the microphone. But the engineer was reprimanded by EMI for doing so. Though I can hear the Brian Wilson influence now, I couldn't when I first heard the song in the mid-80's. At that time I remember also having copies of Rubber Soul, Pet Sounds and Sgt. Pepper but still not realizing they were connected...
