Set List critique

Paul could certainly do a more improvised, spur-of-the-moment show if he wanted to. Four decades of post-Beatle experience shows pretty conclusively that he doesn't want to.

Sad but why should he, the first timers eat up the Beatle songs and think these between song stories are brand new. It is also easy for him because he could do the most inane Beatle song and people would go crazy but the same people would run to the bathroom on a very good solo song - oh well.

Why should he? Because he's the greatest songwriter on the planet and has a LOT more to say than what he did from 1964-1974!!!! I've been seven times and I eat up the Beatles songs! It will never die. However, even Paul has begun to introduce some of these songs and even his own stories with "Now if you've seen the show before you'll know....<insert George Harrison Ukulele story, Jimi Hendrix Guitar Story, Paperback Writer Guitar Story>.... I can't say I've seen people running to the bathroom any time a post-Beatles song is played. The only song I can say I have seen consistently cause a noticeable displacement of patrons is "My Valentine". Everyone in Pittsburgh was eating up the NEW music alongside the Beatles tracks. "1985" gets a huge roar every time and keeps the crowd on their feet. You think all the first-time Beatle freaks knew that one? Have a little more faith in the catalog friend....

For the record: yankeefan7 loves the catalog as much as I do.

Thanks, I was being sarcastic in previous post which is hard to tell in print unless somebody knows you fairly well.

We all have our favorite set list, and I don't think we would agree on what he should play other than what we want to hear. Or what we don't want to hear or what era he should include etc. etc.. Most of us have been to multiple shows so we are a little jaded to say the least. None of us are wrong because it's our individual opinions. And he does what he wants because it's HIS opinion!! As far as what Mr. McCartney wants to play it's pretty evident from his set list and his interviews, especially his last Rolling Stone interview. He's doing what he wants to do. We can always hope for our individual favorites or just change in general. but until he actually does it. you know what you are getting when you go, right? If he played our "favorites" and obscure songs we would be the 2 or 4 % that would be happy. Not the other 95 or 96%.
-
I personally think there is a lot of room for improvement (as defined by the repeat customers who are disappointed he doesn't vary his set more than he does) while still including a number of the 'same ol', same ol' for first timer/young fans If he kept Hey Jude, Let It Be, Yesterday, Live and Let Die, Band on the Run, Blackbird, Get Back, Back in the USSR and the Golden Slumbers medley...and then changed every other song in the set list to represent songs never performed before (or at least since Wings disbanded), the first timers as well as the veteran fans would be equally as pleased. Of course he'd have to also include one or two 'Beatlemania' years songs (which I failed to list specifically above)...but they don't always have to be I Saw Her Standing There are Can't Buy Me Love...while I'm more so starved for more recent (as in post Wings material), I wouldn't mind seeing the band tackle I Wanna Hold Your Hand

Do you really honestly believe that 96% of the concert attendees would NOT be happy if he swapped out a few Beatles songs for wings/solo? That's absurd. Sure, he can do what he wants. 99% of the time, what he wants is conveniently enough what I want!

I've never heard him say that, so I'm not sure I believe you on that point

He has absolutely been qualifying some of his anecdotes by mentioning "you might've heard me tell the story...," etc.
-
He mentioned repeating the stories when I saw him in London in 2011 , so even his saying the regular concert goers might have heard this , is getting old lol

So your quite right wixrocks but you generally know what your talking about .

What I said was" if he played our favorites and obscure songs we would be the 2 0r 4% that would be happy. Not the other 95 or 96%. I didn't mention swapping out Beatles songs for Wings/solo. By obscure I mean not the hits necessarily and I didn't differentiate between Beatles, wings or solo, but our individual choices, and yes I honestly believe that. I think it would be absurd to think that if he didn't play his "hits" most of the audience on any given night would be disappointed.

Alrighty. It's your opinion But the proof is in the pudding with songs like "1985" "All Together Now" and "Here Today". Each from different eras of his career and none of them remotely close to being hits yet, receiving equal applause to tracks like "Paperback Writer" and "Listen To What The Man Said".

Those songs are excellent additions. I consider 1985 a hit. I'm sure you and I would enjoy different songs, my and your individual favorites hits or not, but my point still is if he didn't play his hits most of the audience would be disappointed. If the whole concert was made up of Here Today and All together now type songs I would enjoy the concert but most who have not seen him as much would not.
