I never understood the "hate" of Ebony and Ivory" which BTW was a #1 hit. I am not saying it is a classic but to put it in the category of anything Miley Cyrus did is just plain insulting.
I gotta say I am one who has always liked Ebony and Ivory. The Stevie collaboration and the solo version. Don't understand why it is so maligned. It was huge at the time too.
I've always liked it too. I have to wonder, though: I just saw something on TV about all the elephants killed for their ivory tusks, and how it's illegal to bring ivory to the US to sell. Knowing how Paul is an animal activist, could that be one reason he doesn't do this song live anymore? Last time was for Flowers In The Dirt, right?
IMO - the reason he did not do it again is because I think Mr. McCartney did not believe it came off well without Stevie Wonder. I think Hamish did a nice job with the Stevie Wonder part but it just did not click. Maybe it would work if he did it with Abe doing the Stevie vocal but I don't think it will ever be done again live unless it is with Stevie.
Good point. By the way, I'm seeing Stevie on Sunday night. Think Paul will show up?

Yeah, I am always a bit suspicious of the "he won't perform it live because it was overplayed on the radio" excuse. Really??? McCartney doesn't want to play a hit??? I suspect it has to do with how he is perceived. That Ebony and Ivory is seen as "light" and "sappy." Hell, it's more of a political tune than Blackbird! It has a positive message about race relations. Oh, and I am not convinced Abe could to the Stevie Wonder part of the song. Abe is good at doubling Paul and doing some harmonies, but there is no indication he could handle or is good enough to sing a solo part. Hamish Stewart and Denny Lane were proven lead singers before they were ever in a band with McCartney.

I have no doubt of Abe's solo vocal abilities...BUT, that's not why I go to a Paul McCartney concert

I still have hopes that Paul will rehearse something new before the next Brazilian leg.

Heard Ebony and Ivory at soundcheck a few years back (I heard it from outside) with Abe doing the Stevie part. Sounded fine to me. no one can be Stevie Wonder of course but Abe held his own.

Well, Paul obviously would do Ebony and Ivory live with Hamish but not with Abe. Go figure. What I find intriguing is the new Art of McCartney CD. Paul's band was heavily involved, so some of those tunes could be reproduced live, even in different keys like on the CD: Junior's Farm My Love Wanderlust Bluebird Junk Every Night Venus and Mars/Rock Show Helen Wheels Letting Go Let 'Em In So Bad No More Lonely Nights Come and Get It On The Way C Moon Put It There These 16 songs would go a long way to quench the thirst of any hardcore fan! And no Ebony and Ivory in the bunch!

Doesn't Paul have some kind of personal thing against changing key? I don't know why he should; plenty of older singers do it (Billy Joel, Elton John, etc.), but my understanding is that everything he does now is in the original key. Good point about his band knowing how to play these songs, and no, I can't see Abe doing Stevie's part in "Ebony and Ivory" in the regular show; he's not famous enough for it to have impact. I did not like Hamish on "And I Love Her" either.

I wouldn't count on any changes for the remaining dates

As long as he keeps selling out venues doing the same show over and over again, there is really no reason for him to change a thing, even where he tours. Usually a market gets saturated and an artist waits a few years in between performances. But the USA and South America seem to be an infinite source of financial wealth for him to keep playing those markets over and over and over again and never have to go anywhere else.

Oh?
Terrible!! Just kidding! Great voice he has. Maybe Paul will do Ebony and Ivory with him!

Let's not forget, Paul did play Ebony and Ivory at the White House a couple years ago -- with Stevie himself. So he's not totally embarrassed by the song by any means.
-
There will be two concerts in São Paulo, hopefully with setlist variations, even if they are just a couple of songs. But I'm still hoping for something unusual, even if it's just at a soundcheck.

I saw Paul twice in Chile last April and variations between both shows were: *Magical Mystery Tour / Eight days a week *Things we said today / I've Just Seen a Face *I saw Her Standing There / Get Back

From a 1989 show, for those who haven't heard Hamish singing the Stevie part (video on this not so good but the audio is very good.) I have never been a big fan of this song; I think my problem with it is that it is a bit too slow-tempo for me. It was a huge hit, yes, so I don't know why Paul isn't performing it any more, but I'm personally ok with that decision. That is fine but the point about this song in the thread was that it was included in a radio stations list of 885 worst songs ever. It was included with things from Miley Cyrus OMG !! My point was while it many here may not love the song, it still is not as bad as anything from Miley Cyrus.

Verrrryyyy interesting reading the track list for the Art Of McCartney album - my understanding is that Paul's band play the backing track for most if not all of those recording. So apparently Paul's band has learned So Bad, Helen Wheels, Wanderlust and last but not least No More Lonely Nights??? They can actually play those in their entirety. If they know those tunes how on Earth does it not cross his mind to pick up the bass during rehearsals run through them and add them to the set list? That would be incredible. Same reason though I guess that he won't touch the Rickenbacker bass with a 10 foot pole - it's like he's forgotten he ever played it

I don't think the band needed record on an album in order to learn these songs...I'm willing to bet that any of the songs you mentioned could be ironed out on the fly in 3 takes or less, even if the band was rehearsing them from scratch and some members were not familiar with them
