Movement for a collaboration with David Bowie
-
Hello everyone, I was reading the Beatles Wog Blog for any new Beatles/Paul - related news when I came across a recent article about a new movement trying to get Paul and Bowie to work together on new material. Intrigued, I decided to go ahead and read the petition they made. While much of the petition is obviously written in a tongue-in-cheek tone, it seems to be a legitimate fan-driven movement (though it doesn't specify as to whether they are calling for a song or album, but they don't seem to want a just a performance). It's an interesting idea and it would be fascinating if it came to fruition. Have to admit that the idea of something that is purely fan-driven is pretty exciting. Plus, as it says, they are both pretty experimental and particularly active at the moment. But I'm more than a bit skeptical on how this collaboration would happen. Still, I'm sure their reasoning is that doing all this makes it more likely than staying silent and leaving it to chance (and they do seem to be rather organized, see links below). So what do all of you think about this? Will you be signing it or encouraging others to? Is there a future, or history, in artists being drafted into collaborations by fans? Amazing how the internet makes these questions valid in the 21st century... ~~~~ Here are some links... Isn't there a bad luck superstition with Bowie?

I don't think I'll be "singing" it (or signing it either)

I thought Bowie and Queen did a wonderful job with Under Pressure. Even if they ripped off the riff from Vanilla Ice (or was that the other way around?.... just joking).... Bowie and Jagger had a bit of a hit, even if a cover, and they are forever remembered for it for the horrid fashion at the time of the music video.... plus it wasn't their first real collaboration, well, if Angie is to be believed... but I see no need for McCartney and Bowie to collaborate.... although would rather see that than him join forces with one of today's soon-to-be-forgotten newbies.

Well, to be fair, Paul doesn't really need to collaborate with anyone. Now, I've decided to sample some of his post-comeback material (some of it for the second time), and it's definitely strong. Additionally, it's hard to deny that Bowie has a unique, highly experimental edge/angle to his approach. After hearing his recent song 'Tis a Pity She Was a Whore (
,) that became obvious. But I also couldn't help thinking that it's background sound would go well with Paul's vocals on Cut Me Some Slack or Hell To Pay. But the best example of I've seen yet was from the first link shared on the movement's Facebook page: Atomica. From my first listen, the word that came to mind was "electrifying," then it completely changes pace midway - a very Paul move. That's what really made me think there was something to this thing that was really worth thinking about... (For those that haven't heard it, here it it: ) If Paul was able to make the sound of "The Fireman" with Youth, what would he be able to achieve with Bowie, coming from opposite ends? Truth is, those kinds of challenges often result in the most innovative material... Just something to consider. But anyway, I wanted the focus of this thread to be more on the novelty of an actual movement being built around it. That's the interesting part, even if no new music comes of it. I'm curious as to how far they will go. Oh, and their petition is laced with several lyrical references. Quite an amusing read -
They did "Let It Be" at Live Aid A duet would be cool " Oh You Pretty Things " or Uncle Albert /Admiral Halsey would suit them vocally , they have both dabbled in Music Hall style of singing .

I'd rather see him with Bowie than with Kanye. : Here's a great song Bowie did with Mick Jagger.

Great artist make great music. Bowie's last LP is great, he is in a great artistic moment. The same for Paul.

Absolutely. I hear ya!

Three words: No. No. NO.

Agreed with that. But I don't think either of them need a songwriting collaborator. It might have interesting results, though I doubt a partnership ala Lennon/McCartney would develop.

This will never happen because Bowie isn't a McCartney guy. Bowie is a Lennon guy, and he's said as much. Bowie and John Lennon were good friends in the late 70s.

I agree - and I quantify this by saying I am somewhat of a Bowie fan too, though to the level of which I am a Paul and/or Beatles fan

I've thought about it for years, but I doubt it will ever happen. Bowie collaborated with Lennon on "Young Americans" and he covered "Working Class Hero" with Tin Machine. Also, he covered Harrison's "Try Some, Buy Some" on "Reality". Bowie sang backing vocals on "Let It Be" at Live Aid. I'm quite a fan of Bowie myself and I've always wondered what McCartney thinks about his music. I can't remember that he has mentioned him once. Or any of his records. McCartney produced or soundscaped by Brian Eno is also an interesting thought. He produced Paul Simon's "Surpirse" a couple of years ago. A surprising collaboration.
-
Not too many of McCartney's contemporaries could upstage him -- but Bowie could.
-
Yeah I wonder if it could have worked. If they had found the chemistry. But it depends perhaps on McCartney would have done it, in the wake of Lennon... I once read an interview with Elton John where he complained that Paul was the only Beatle who had not collaboarated with him. Is it a coincidence?
