London Town

What an underrated album this is. I'm working my way through the great McCartney's albums from the s/t and and now up to this. So many all time great tracks: London Town Cafe on the Left Bank I'm Carrying Backwards Traveller Girlfriend With a Little Luck Don't Let it Bring You Down even the reissue track Girls School rules. Any love for this album round here?
I'll probably love all of it soon. Actually, my thoughts when it first came out was.... "why did he leave that "Morse Moose and Grey Goose" thing in the album?? I thought the album should have ended after the GREAT....and one of my all-time favorite McCartney songs...."Don't Let It Bring You Down". After that, I thought the finale just embarrassing. The mood had been ruined for me. I'm waiting for it to be remastered so I can be dazzled!!! (I also wished the album had used the single version of "With A Little Luck". I thought the album version just meandered too much. I' may change my mind on that too. Haven't listed to it in ages....want the remastered version.) And I thought "Girls School" was vastly superior to "I've Had Enough," which seemed forced to me....but that's just me.
Can't believe you don't rate the full version of 'With A Little Luck', one of the highlights of the album. Whenever I hear this song come on the radio, I always pray that it's not going to be the dreadful radio edit, but it usually is. Its one of the best examples of a radio version which really is taken out of context. You need to hear the whole thing to appreciate it fully.

"Morse Moose and the Grey Goose" is a cool track, but it makes quite a peaceful album ending with a noise. It could have been "Mull of Kintyre" instead and it would have faded out with a beautiful ballad closer to the title track it started with. I think it would also added a more thoroughgoing folk vibe. I consider "London Town" a masterpiece, I think it's the only thing I would or could have wanted to change. Well, maybe I also like the working title "Water Wings"...

Should be plenty of love on a Macca message board because it is a great album and probably is overshadowed a bit by other PM/Wings albums. Another album that really has grown on me over time. Great tracks like the ones you mention Don't Let It Bring You Down and With a Little Luck are two of my all time faves. How about Deliver Your Children, Name And Address (nice Elvis homage**) and the epic Morse Moose and The Grey Goose.** It is one that I'm really look forward to in the remastered reissue series because I don't think the existing CD's have been remastered too well. I hope they really improve that aspect.
There are a lot of things I could say about that "song". "Epic" is not one of them. Embarrassing atrocity, however, comes to mind.....To each his own, I guess.

Well I prefer Morse Moose to a lot of Beatles tracks, put it that way.

'Morse Moose and The Grey Goose' is epic for me too. We never expect Paul doing that, but he did. Anyway I think it shouldn't be the end of an album.
-
Both "Morse Moose" and "Famous Groupies" are somewhat satirical takes on American tv-show themes -- or, at least, elements of that exist in both songs (Gilligan's Island and Saturday-morning cartoons, respectively).
-
I think "Famous Groupies" is a fun song. But it's about other times maybe, I don't think anyone will be artists anymore to get chicks. Being a musician now is perhaps not as glamorous anymore. it is a profession, like everything else, maybe for Justin Bieber but otherwise, he'd better be careful, maybe the girls regret later.

London Town has definitely grown on me over time. It's mellow, tuneful, and warm. I used to think it was too slight, but I've come to appreciate its casual feel. It's not perfect, but its got a good vibe. And I've always loved the title track. What a beautiful melody.

I'm 1000% with you on that...in fact, they almost come off as two different songs in my mind...one being one of Paul's best songs (full album version) and one that rates pretty low on the ol' paul-o-meter

IMO, 'London Town' is much better than 'Venus & Mars'. The only problem is the sound... it could be better. Extremely soft.
-
Cafe on the left bank a true wings song and I love the story of the studio being set up as a French cafe

I think this album is very clever. For me, I think of medieval England with a lot of it. I like every contribution (although I don't think of Cuff Link as a real song, admittedly). Another of those albums that has grown on me a lot since first listening.... although, back in the day, on first listening of any Paul solo album I was expecting Son-of-Yesterday and Daughter-of Let it Be. With A Little Luck is a gem. One of my favourite post-Beatles' songs from Paul. So too, London Town. I've Had Enough is a great, great rocker. Denny's vocal contributions are really good, very catchy.... and generally I want more of Paul, and less of the others. And yes, it seems I might be in the minority, but I love Girlfriend.... perfectly suited for Michael Jackson. Don't Let it Bring You Down is also underrated, a wonderful song that I have appreciated further through age/maturity. A great album.

Very true.

I like alot of this album but for me it really should have been cut back a few songs...Both Denny Laine songs about Children and Girlfriend (all 3 would have been @ best , B-sides) and imagine it with Mull AND Girls' School..

Nah. I like it pretty much as is. But I would replace Famous Groupies with Mull of Kintyre if I could. Sometimes Paul's attempts at humor just don't work, and Mull deserved a larger audience -- especially in the U.S., which hardly heard it as a single.

Agree it is one of his most underrated. It's a great album and one of Wings finest. I think Famous Groupies is for me the only track I could do without. So many great sounds on this one.

London Town is a big fav of mine since it came out in 1978! Looking at it now a bit of pruning and it would be a brilliant album rather than just a very, very good one. I would have the album like this: LONDON TOWN CAFE ON THE LEFT BANK I'M CARRYING DELIVER YOUR CHILDREN I'VE HAD ENOUGH WITH A LITTLE LUCK FAMOUS GROUPIES NAME AND ADDRESS DON'T LET IT BRING YOU DOWN MORSE MOOSE AND THE GREY GOOSE I love Girl's School, but it just doesn't fit the mood of the album, so it's left off still like Mull!
-
have to give this one a try
-
Wish 'Mull of Kintyre', 'Girl's School', and 'Waterspout' was on the album. Get rid of the dreadful 'Girlfriend' and Laine's 'Children, Children'. Macca's most British album by far & his most charming. I remember it getting slammed by most of the press at the time, since music was in the middle of the punk & disco phases & new wave was just beginning. London Town seemed very much out of place with pop music at the time, but that is part of its lasting charm.

I just hope that "London Town" is part of the McCartney archive reissues. I've read so many different things about the reissue plans, that it will end in 2016 and only a handful of albums is planned released. To not do a remaster and reissue of "London Town", I think would be a huge mistake. There are also plenty of interesting outtakes.
