Solo Paul rocked harder than Solo John
-
There is still this perception (although its shifting) that solo John rocked harder than solo Paul. After a re-listening of their solo work, I just dont think thats true. John had some raw rockers, especially on his 1st two solo albums, but for the most part, he was writing more pop, insipid love songs than solo Paul. Mind Game, Walls, & Double Fantasy were very pop, lightweight, imo. Even John's Instant Karma, sounds very pop-ish today.

They both rocked hard during their time!!! John with Cold Turkey and Paul with Juniors Farm, great songs!!! I feel confident that many of my fellow Beatles fanatics can name other solo John and Paul Rockers!

Yes they each have many all-out screaming raving rockers. Ever since John departed this world, each of his songs seems very special just knowing there won't be any more. Even folksy lighter fare like "Oh, Yoko" which sounds so joyful and happy. John's deeper louder more harrowing numbers like "Cold Turkey" and many on his first solo album make a greater impression, but his "Double Fantasy" efforts have such a pleasing Retro sound-- it's very interesting to compare and contrast the two styles he used on these.

John also had I'm losing you. Paul did rock hard at times, what he has had a hard time overcoming are songs like Say, Say, Say and With A Little Luck. John did not have any songs like those. Wings Over America tour was killer, but his big hits at the time were Listen To What The Man Said, Silly Love Songs, and Let 'Em In. Not very rock.

Paul will never live down the horrid The Girl Is Mine, Say Say Say, Pipes Of Peace, Ode To a Koala Bear, Broadstreet, Spies Like Us, Once Upon a Long Ago sequence. And while intended as a kids song, The Frog Song was misunderstood and didn't help either. Most of the other stuff he was releasing was slick sounding garbage. While trying to be hip and cool, he totally lost his way. I believe that's partly why he returned to touring in 89: as a way to repair his then tarnished reputation. In spite if everything else, he's a great live act. That 80's stretch easily the nadir of his long career.

John rocked harder on Monday, Wednesday and Friday. Paul rocked harder on Tuesday and Thursday and every other Saturday. They alternated Sundays.

The perception even goes back to the early days of The Beatles, where you had Paul's ballad Yesterday followed by John's blistering cover of Dizzie Miss Lizzie on the Help! album. Mind Games had Meat City, W&B the instrumental Beef Jerky, which both rocked pretty good. He had a hard rock version of I'm Losing You he did with the guys from Cheap Trick, but dropped it for a more "bluesy"version. He wanted Yoko's songs on DF to have the harder edge, and his went for the AC feel deliberately. I love his "insipid" love songs btw, which I think are better than Paul's in this period for the most part.

By "insipid" are you referring to John's "Woman?"

I showcase Paul songs at intervals on my facebook page and realized I place his slower, milder and highly melodious numbers there, for the most part. Knocked out by those melodies I put John's "I'm Losing You" on there not long ago and it provided quite a contrast. Although not one of John's hardest. I need to put an all out Paul screamer on there. I placed "Coming Up" and "Tomorrow" which came across a bit like novelty songs but novelty of the best kind. Compared to the rest. "Mull of Kintyre" and "Once Upon a Long Ago" and "Arrow Through It" were my most popular posts of Paul songs, so far, garnered the most response. And "Coming Up." Oh and "So Bad" Maybe it's because of going through a lot these past few years that I favored his smooth sound, helped me nerves I don't regard his slower stuff as easy going middle of the road and bland, but as smooth, sweet, soulful, pretty. Maybe I'm more into his pop than into his rock. And don't feel I should be ops: embarrassed because of that.

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Nuit It also has something to do with Aleister Crowley who is one of the people on the cover of Sgt.Pepper!
