The Beatles - please help me understand
-
ps. I've already had notice that my issue of the new Beatles' release is to be delayed a week..... getting real annoyed now. Not sure whether just isolated to my supplier or if it will be something many others will have to face.

Lack of melody?? The Beatles practically invented melody for a rock group.
Some of the more experimental tracks lack melody for me.
Which ones would you call experimental? Tomorrow Never Knows? When I was 11 I wasn't keen on it, but 49 years later? Love it!

As a Macca solo / Wings fan, I've never really 'got' The Beatles. Sure, they recorded some good songs, and some great ones. But they also recorded some practically unlistenable stuff, examples of which can be found at: http://ultimateclassicrock.com/worst-beatles-songs/ My favourite Beatles songs include Eleanor Rigby and Helter Skelter, but there are relatively few tracks which really 'grab' me as a proportion of what they actually released during the 60's. In contrast, I could probably count on 2 hands the number of tracks I couldn't listen to from Macca's ENTIRE post Beatle career. (E.g CMoon, Freedom and the medlay on RRS) Maybe it's the 60's production I can't warm to? Or the complete lack of melody on their more experimental tracks. I'd welcome any advice on tracks to check out, rather than complete albums, unless you think there's an album that's faultless... I know all the big hits obviously, but what are the hidden album gems I should consider? Do you think I can be converted? Do you think there's something wrong with me ? Thanks for your help
When I was young and Sgt. Pepper's Lonely Hearts Club Band came out, I didn't get it. I was still into pop music and this was definitely beyond pop. 5 years later I got the album, and totally dug it. I still wholeheartedly love it! So maybe there's hope for you yet.

I do like some specific tracks, but will never be into them in the same way as Wings/solo.

As I have discovered over the years, not everyone loves The Beatles. Only most people on the planet! So it's perfectly OK if you don't (though I could never have a serious conversation with you about Wings being better than The Beatles).

The Beatles are perfect to me, Paul's solo/Wings music doesn't come anywhere close.

Some people don't like the Beatles. Some people don't like chocolate or ice cream. There is a technical term for such individuals. clinically insane.

Throw in "Get Smart" and popcorn and you've got the full Top-Five coverage on that!

The Beatles are no big mystery. They were so popular and are still talked about so much today because they were the greatest band in the history of the universe. If you're a Paul fan, there's no reason not to like I'll Follow the Sun

Things We Said Today Paperback Writer For No OneI actually like all the above, apart from Paperback Writer which I can't stand - annoying and repetitive. 'Paperback Writer, writer writer' etc BTW, I managed to covert my fellow musician friend into loving Wings. He simply hadn't bothered to listen to the albums and had always been a McCartney solo/Wings sceptic. Now he genuinely listens to them more than The Beatles. I don't dislike The Beatles, but I just don't understand how they are so highly rated, and I could never be a proper fan(atic)

Add to the list Monty Python and Fawlty Towers!

You might not like the Beatles. You can prefer solo Paul to the Beatles. But solo Paul without the Beatles is something akin to Elton John or Billy Joel, which is not a bad thing, though one could argue Paul's solo career on its own is really not quite up to scratch with artists like Elton or Joel. It is his Beatles catalogue with John, George and Ringo that puts him over the top. And the other three too!

Monty Python was rubbish. Not remotely funny. Fawlty Towers though - a classic! Brilliantly written.

Could you name the ones you mean by "more experimental tracks"?
Would you answer please - i was taking an interest!! If you would name which "more experimental tracks" you think "lack melody" then i could give an opinion back (I don't think many beatles songs lack melody btw - just you know my name loko up the number maybe..! Though i do prefer solo Paul to the beatles, i still love the beatles as well)

I was referring to their movies (The Life Of Brian, etc) not necessarily their TV show. Didn't you like any of their movies?

Hi Nancy. I wasn't keen on the clips I've seen from either the movies or tv shows. They are very popular though. I think the reunited not long ago for a stage show.
