Was No More Lonely Nights Paul's last classic?

They can both be classics. There's plenty of room.
They can, sure. But they're not. No More Lonely Nights is mediocre, Paul on autopilot, and easily the weakest of the original tunes from Broadstreet IMHO.
Which is the best original Broadstreet song, IYHO?

You couldn't be more wrong, cousin Brucie.
Thank you for the thoughtful, nuanced analysis.

I like both No Values and Not Such a Bad Boy about equally. Neither is a masterpiece, but both are good, solid rockers in an era when Paul wasn't generally rocking and rolling very much. I've just never seen what people see in No More Lonely Nights. I don't mind it, but would never go out of my way to listen to it.

If "Band on the run" and "Live and let die" are classics ..."No more lonely nights " ia a Super classic!!!!!!

IS a Super Classic!

Hard to define a classic, but in my book My Valentine is a vastly better, more interesting song than No More Lonely Nights.

Eek! I actually think it is a beautiful melody but what lets it down (imho) is the naff 80s production. It's symptomatic of the his production style of the mid 80s. It's dated with cheesy backing vocals. But may be that's just me and my view of 80s music! It's the type of song that would have benefited with a 90s revamp such as Beautiful Night.

NMLN is nicely sung and there's great guitar work from David Gilmour but its one of those songs like Only Love Remains, its not bad but its nothing to get excited over either.
-
I've recently rediscovered Only Love Remains and think it is beautiful. Another gorgeous melody and it's lovely to sing along to in the car!
-
Only love remains is the worse love song that macca wrote! And No more lonely nights is zillions ways better than "My love"!
-
How quickly some of us have forgotten "Tough On A Tightrope"...
-
To me, "If I take you home tonight" sang by Diana Krall is his last classic.

Well, I like Tough on a Tightrope too, can't remember the other one "write away' (as Ita Buttrose might say.... with the lisp), but always liked "It's not True"!... that's still a song for me that should have been on the album. Really, really like that song.

I'm just glad he didn't try to rhyme Flutter , with Nutter Butter , that was MY 1ST thought when I heard it on the radio
-
Audi i haven't forgot that song, in fact is the best love song from the album "press to play"

It's a lovely song, but this thread has mostly been about songs Paul recorded himself. One underappreciated talent Paul has is writing songs perfectly suited for other performers: Let's Love for Peggy Lee, On the Wings of a Nightingale for the Everly Bros., and "If I Take You Home Tonight" being prime examples.

Where is the topic about songs he wrote for other artists?
-
I think Ebony and Ivory is the last song he wrote that most people recognize. That said, my mom, who barely knows Paul outside of the Beatles remembers hearing songs like Figure of Eight on the radio and liking it. I guess it all depends on where you live.
