McCartney's Best "Meaningful Lyric" Songs

As a hidden track on Paul's most recent studio album, 'Scared' is rather overlooked which is a shame as it is one of Paul's most heartfelt songs in a long time. Sacred: I'm scared to say I love you Afraid to let you know That the simplest of words won't come out of my mouth Though I'm dying to let them go Trying to let you know I have to say I'm sorry Don't feel sad for me But the beautiful birds won't fly out of their cage Though I'm trying to set them free Trying to let you see, how much you mean to me I remember the first time we met Tears in our eyes reflecting Something connecting from so long ago It might have been told in the stars, maybe that's what is was It doesn't matter because I'm still too scared to tell you Afraid to let you see see That the simplest of words won't come out of my mouth Though I'm dying to set them free Trying to let you see, how much it means to me How much you mean to me How much you mean to me now. ------------------------------------------------------ Interestingly,it shares a similar theme with I Want You To Fly with its imagery of freedom and escaping a cage.

Well, of course they censored d i c k i e bird! It is just a nickname for a small bird, but for the British it's this: http://www.oxfordlearnersdictionaries.com/us/definition/english/****-bird Dang, censored again. Just Google it! P.S. The link still works! So Paul is saying she won't say a word.

I too love the music and words to "The End of the End". Don't know why but I also like the whistling in the middle.
-
I'm searching through back pages for my review of "Chaos and Creation" in which I addressed each song, not in great detail but in some detail. His "Scared" song really affects me, too. So much emotion laid bare. And in a lovely piano ballad.

I agree that the lyrics to "The End of The End" are particularly meaningful, as I am in the middle of my 6th decade, so I can feel the lyrics as they pertain to my life. At the end of the end It's the start of a journey To a much better place And this wasn't bad So a much better place Would have to be special No need to be sad On the day that I die I'd like jokes to be told And stories of old to be rolled out like carpets That children have played on And laid on while listening to stories of old At the end of the end It's the start of a journey To a much better place And a much better place Would have to be special No reason to cry On the day that I die I'd like bells to be rung And songs that were sung to be hung out like blankets That lovers have played on And laid on while listening to songs that were sung At the end of the end It's the start of a journey To a much better place And a much better place Would have to be special No reason to cry No need to be sad At the end of the end I also find the lyrics to "For No One" very meaningful...to me. Enough said.

"The End of the End" is special to me because it came out literally as my father was dying.

_______________________________________________________ Kestrel, Great example. "Scared" is definitely a highly underrated Paul piano ballad for both music and lyrics. Never understood the whole "hidden" track marketing concept. Once the album becomes old, it is pretty silly not to have it included in the album's track listing. It can get even more lost or forgotten years later when people are looking up specific albums on the internet. I noticed that even here (PM own Website) when you go into the music and song section, they don't even list Scared so you can see the lyrics.

Talk about Paul's "honesty" songs....one of my favorites from Chaos and Creation Riding to Vanity Fair (excerpts) I bit my tongue I never talk too much I tried to be strong I did my best I used the gentle touch I've done it for so long You put me down But I can laugh it off And act like nothing's wrong But Why pretend I think I've heard enough Of Your familiar song... ...The Definition of friendship Apparently ought to be Showing support for the one that you love And I was open to friendship But you didn't seem to have any to spare While you were riding to Vanity Fair...

So sad, so sad Sometimes she feels so sad Alone in her apartment she'd dwell Till the man of her dreams Comes to break the spell Stay, don't stand her up And he comes and he stays But he leaves the next day So sad Sometimes she feels so sad

**Not sure what **** bird is...must be a British expression but I think these lyrics are great and it certainly happens to kids who are shunned.
I think shitbird is an American expression. It's not a compliment.

__________________________________________________ Hailey, The lyric line above in the song "She's Given Up Talking" is: Not a "dickie" bird and it is definitely a British expression. In case it is deleted again, you can find the complete song lyrics by clicking the Paul McCartney Website tag and then hit the music tag followed by "song" tag. Individual songs are done alphabetically. It's like the 4th line in the song.

__________________________________ Recognize the song right away...Another Day. Think it was Paul's first single after the Beatles. Another sad song in Paul's Catalog.

If you would read my posts above this one, you'll see it's d i c k y bird which is Cockney rhyming slang for "word."

I must say that I think the auto-censorship used on this site is pretty pathetic. I mean, what's going to happen if I want to discuss that classic kids film Mary Poppins and one of its lead actors Dick Van Dyke ?

I know, it's ridiculous! Can't talk about John & Yoko on the Dick Cavett show either! :

One of Paul's greatest lyric songs is Here Today. Because Paul always plays it on tour, it also has become (and rightfully so) well known. As we know, Paul always gives us a brief introduction saying that we never put off saying something nice and kind to someone. The words to Here Today are so simple but yet so powerful. One of the best lyrics to a popular song of all time. It also reminded me of another great little song of Paul's that has a similar thought. The song is called "This One" from Flowers in the Dirt. Lyrics are below after Here Today. Here Today (from Tug of War) excerpts: And if I said I really know you well What would your answer be If you were here today Here Today Well knowing you You'd probably laugh and say That we were world's apart If you were here today Here today But as for me I still remember how it was before And I am holding back the tears no more I love you ____________________________________________________ This One (from Flowers in the Dirt) excerpts: Did I ever take you in my arms Look you in the eye, tell you that I do Did I ever open up my heart Let you look inside If I never did it, I was only waiting For a better moment that didn't come There never could be a better moment Than this one, This One

"Let It Be" is quite a heavy hitter for me, after feeling it really did something great for me in a moment of deep despair and sudden utter hopelessness which struck after hearing Carly Simon's song "Hello Big Man" about her parents, how they met, their love story, etc. Suddenly my mind flashed on my parents being gone possibly forever never to see them again, and I got so wild the idea flashed to throw myself through a window or a similar drastic act and right then I heard part of "Let It Be" play in my head. The lyrics and overall experience of the song really soothed and calmed me down. It's funny how God, an angel (or parents?) or my subconscious leapt into action immediately, to save me. Using Paul's beautiful ballad. Doubtless his music has really helped so many in times of distress.
