2017 Setlist Speculation Thread
-
That's a testament to the incredible amount of great music Paul has written. The man plays three dozen songs a show and even if he played my dream setlist, he'd still be leaving out countless great songs. When I came up with my dream setlist, I still had to take some songs and be like, "Yeah, they're great, but these are greater." It's a great problem to have. I've found that a lot of my favorite songs for a lot of bands/artists tend to be sort of off-the-beaten-path songs. Zoo Station by U2, Raise Your Hands by Bon Jovi (which they do admittedly play a fair bit, but the song is never a guarantee), etc. I wish I was more low maintenance. But yes, Paul, Wix, Abe, Brian, Rusty: if you or anyone who communicates with you regularly is reading this, Paperback Writer in Tampa would be greatly appreciated.

Sort of related to this thread... In a new Q&A Paul did in Japan he was asked if he'll be playing songs from Flowers in the Dirt on the tour. His answer is classic Paul. Go watch. https://live.line.me/channels/73/broadcast/2714854

Classic Paul? I can only imagine. Going to watch now... 1st question is about the jacket(Nancy's) & he says I think it's from the 70s. IT SAYS 1980 TOUR on it Paul!

In Tokyo this week, Paul says they are "planning to play some some from Flowers in the Dirt on tour this year, but they haven't actually rehearsed them yet. He said they have a couple of thoughts to do some songs from Flowers in the Dirt on tour this year, but they don't know which songs to knock out of the current set.... That is good news!!! OMG I HOPE HE PLAYS SOME SONG OFF "FLOWERS IN THE DIRT" I will literally go nuts if he sang some songs of this album!!! PLEASE PAUL! "There never could be a better moment than this one, this one!"

Wow. I'll believe it when I see it, and God I really hope I do. If this actually comes to fruition, I would expect swaps like this...but I'm still well beyond skeptical: Temporary Secretary --> My Brave Face In Spite of All The Danger --> Put it There Four Five Seconds --> This One

Haha yeah I know, me too. But at least we know "officially" what might happen. Unlike pretty much this whole topic in general where we are always guessing. And those are the swaps I was actually thinking as well!! Although I love the NEW songs, he could swap those out now since I believe they won't be in the setlist once the new records comes out anyway..

Yeah, I was thinking of these based on instrumentation. Are there any FITD songs he could sing from the magic piano? I couldn't think of any that I could see making the cut for the show.

He could take out "Birthday" or "Hi Hi Hi" and put it "This One" or "My Brave Face" there? I think the problem with FourFiveSeconds is that he uses the acoustic in that bit and that is right before Elenor Rigby and after the magical piano That Day Is Done? But I don't think he would come out of two slow songs (Blackbird and Here Today) into another slow song (although I would to hear That Day Is Done)... He could do the original "Flaming Pie" on the piano how it came out 20 years ago!

I don't think the FITD songs would hold up in an encore. "Hi, Hi, Hi" only works there because its a typical rock shuffle and when you hear it, you at least feel like you know it. None of those songs have that harmonic arrangement. Paul could always play acoustic on "This One", and it would still fit the "Four Five Seconds" slot. I always wondered why Paul opted to not play piano on "Flaming Pie", especially since it debuted on the US tour with the "piano in a hole" shtick. It would have fit right in there! While its a great rockin' tune, I've heard it twice and exactly need it to come back. It would probably replace "Junior's Farm" or "Letting Go" and I'd rather hear either of them again. Paul can work on making swaps elsewhere!

Right!? And I though Paul could play "This One" like the demo version we heard on the grand piano.. That would be something, that really would be something

There is something that I noticed that was VERY interesting.... Do you see what I see??....

YEEEEEEESSSSS!!!!! : Now...will it happen? I think its safe to assume we won't be hearing any in Japan. He'll probably just make the usual 2-3 swaps over the remaining nights...but I'm starting to firmness on the whole "Paul ignores anniversaries" thing...he's obviously mentioning Sgt. Pepper with the reprise...albeit, a crappy way to do it. He should go big and open the whole show with the full version, then segue into "Getting Better" since there's no Ringo.

I know, I got so excited when I saw this!!! FLOWERS IN THE DIRT!!!! Right, I don't think Japan will get Flowers. Yes, I think you're right about the anniversaries part. With that being said, anything off Sgt. Peppers in there to stay, even if it was already in the last two tours and up to now (Mr. Kite, Sgt. Pepper's Reprise) I am going to opening night in Miami, so we will see if Flowers made the setlist!

How about this: Temporary Secretary < This One In Spite of All The Danger < Put it There Jet/Save Us < My Brave Face move Jet: Letting Go = Jet (alternation)

YES, YES, YES, YES. I always pictured the intro to "My Brave Face" after "A Hard Days Night."

right? If he did those three (or even one), it would be enough to please me for solo work, knowing it's the best we'll get (I'll take This One over FourFiveSeconds any day!)

If he even does ONE of them, I'll be stunned. Singing "My Brave Face" in 2017 as the second song, is not a wise idea. At every show I've seen since 2012, it has taken Paul the entire opening electric set to warm up. Then he usually overdoes it with "Maybe I'm Amazed" and then he's okay for the rest of the set...until the encores, where he seems to save all the songs that are hard to sing... Anyway- in order to get the best out of your Sir Paul for "My Brave Face", pre-heat for approximately twenty minutes (or four songs) and be sure to allot for time to drink it all in.......
